Course Description This course is a general introduction to the philosophy and methods of qualitative research. The aim of this course is to develop an understanding of the idea of qualitative research as a whole and the various ways in which such research is done. The differences between qualitative and quantitative research methodologies will also be highlighted. Some basic tools for doing qualitative study such as participant observations and interviews, and data analysis will be discussed. Course Objectives Upon completion of this course students should be able to:

The Research Proposal Suggested length: 10-15 pages. This proposal should be based on a problem you might be interested in studying. It should include a short introduction summarizing the area of concern with a brief review of literature, research context/theoretical framework, research questions, significance, research methods covering sample, data collection and analysis, and validity issues. A pilot study is strongly encouraged to be conducted. B) In class Presentation Each student finds a qualitative research article as assigned by the instructor. Review the article, and present it to class concentrating on the research design/method/analysis used by the author.
