Abstract Country : Singapore

The Republic of Singapore, is a Southeast Asian city-state off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, 137 kilometres (85 mi) north of the equator. An island country made up of 63 islands, it is separated from Malaysia by the Straits of Johor to its north and from Indonesia's Riau Islands by the Singapore Strait to its south. The country is highly urbanised with very little primary rainforest remaining, although more land is being created for development through land reclamation. Singapore has four official languages: English, Malay, Mandarin, and Tamil Government and politics Singapore is a parliamentary republic with a Westminster system of unicameral parliamentary government representing constituencies. The Constitution of Singapore establishes representative democracy as the political system. In the 2011 parliamentary elections, the opposition, led by the Workers' Party, made significant gains and increased its representation in the House to 6 elected Members of Parliament Geography Singapore consists of 63 islands, including the main island, widely known as Singapore Island but also as Pulau Ujong. There are two man-made connections to Johor, Malaysia: the Johor Singapore Causeway in the north, and the Tuas Second Link in the west. Jurong Island, Pulau Tekong, Pulau Ubin and Sentosa are the largest of Singapore's smaller islands. The highest natural point is Bukit Timah Hill at 166 m (545 ft). There are ongoing land reclamation projects, which have increased its land area from 581.5 km2 (224.5 sq mi) in the 1960s to 704 km2 (272 sq mi) today; it may grow by another 100 km2 (40 sq mi) by 2030. Singapore has a tropical rainforest climate with no distinctive seasons, uniform temperature and pressure, high humidity, and abundant rainfall. Temperatures usually range from 23 to 32 C Economy Singapore has a highly developed market-based economy, based historically on extended entrept trade. Along with Hong Kong, South Korea and Republic of China (Taiwan), Singapore is one of the Four Asian Tigers. The economy depends heavily on exports and refining imported goods, especially in manufacturing, which constituted 27.2% of Singapore's GDP in 2010 and includes significant electronics, petroleum refining, chemicals, mechanical engineering and biomedical sciences sectors. The Singaporean military is the most advanced in Southeast Asia. It is divided between the Army, Navy, and Air force. It is seen as the guarantor of the country's independence. The nation's philosophy of defence is one of diplomacy and deterrence. This principle translates into the culture, involving all citizens in the country's defence. The government spends 4.9% of its GDP on the military

Education Education for primary, secondary, and tertiary levels is mostly supported by the state. All institutions, private and public, must be registered with the Ministry of Education. English is the language of instruction in all public school, .and all subjects are taught and examined in English except for the "Mother Tongue" language paper. Transport Singapore is a major international transportation hub in Asia, positioned on many sea and air trade routes. The Port of Singapore, managed by port operators PSA International and Jurong Port, was the world's second busiest port in 2005 in terms of shipping tonnage handled, at 1.15 billion gross tons, and in terms of containerised traffic, at 23.2 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). It is also the world's second busiest in terms of cargo tonnage, coming behind Shanghai with 423 million tons handled. In addition, the port is the world's busiest for transshipment traffic and the world's biggest ship refuelling centre. Singapore is an aviation hub for the Southeast Asian region and a stopover on the Kangaroo route between Sydney and London. There are 8 total airports in the country, and Singapore Changi Airport hosts a network of 80 airlines connecting Singapore to 200 cities in 68 countries.

Company :NEWater
NEWater may sound like an overnight success for Singapore. But its evolution is a journey that spanned 3 decades. Singapore's first water masterplan was drawn up in 1972. In 1974, PUB built a pilot plant to turn used water into potable water. This was the precursor of today's NEWater factories. But it was ahead of its time. The costs were astronomical and the membranes were unreliable, so the idea was shelved to await further technological advancement. In 1998, the necessary technology had matured and driven production costs down. In May 2000, the first NEWater plant was completed. Currently, there are 5 NEWater plants in Singapore. The fifth and the largest NEWater plant at Changi with a capacity of 50mgd was opened in May 2010. With this addition, coupled with the expansion of the existing plants, NEWater now meets 30% of Singapores total water demand. By 2060, NEWater is projected to meet 50% of Singapores future water demand. The NEWater Visitor Centre, which was opened in February 2003, is the focal point of PUBs public education on NEWater. The centre highlights the importance of water and how Singapore leverages on advances in technology to reclaim water. Visitors are able to view firsthand the operation of the advanced dual membrane and ultraviolet technologies used to produce NEWater.

INTERDUCTION TO THE ORGANISATION Company: NEWater NEWater is the brand name given to reclaimed water produced by Singapore's Public Utilities Board. More specifically, it is treated wastewater (sewage) that has been purified using dual-membrane (via microfiltration and reverse osmosis) and ultraviolet technologies, in addition to conventional water treatment processes. The water is potable and is consumed by humans, but is mostly used for industry requiring high purity water.

Strategic Thrusts
PUB has ensured a diversified and sustainable supply of water for Singaporeans through five strategic thrusts:

y y y y y

Water for All Conserve, Value, Enjoy Competence Connections Creating Value

The twin thrusts Water for All and Conserve, Value, Enjoy encapsulated in PUBs vision statement. Water for All represents our commitment to ensure the robustness, reliability and sustainability of our water supply. Conserve, Value, Enjoy projects PUBs 3P approach in reaching out to our stakeholders and involving the community in our work. Underpinning the above are the 3Cs, which drive how PUB formulates policies and programmes to fulfill our mission and vision: Competence is about getting our people to be technically competent. It is about investing strongly in our people -- in training, technology and creating an environment where our staff can be innovative, highly committed, responsible and always daring to try new ideas. PUBs ability to remain a leading water agency depends on us making sure we keep on developing our competence as an integrated water resource agency with excellent people at all levels of the organisation. Connections is about connecting with our customers, with the community, with the industry, and with other countries in order that people understand us, and work with us. Connecting with Singapore residents is the key part of our mission, but increasingly, we also have to connect with the world to help bring about more business for our water companies, and to keep abreast with technology and best practices. Creating Value is the essence of price-minus that PUB embarked on since 2004. It is not about cost cutting to save money for the short term. It is about making sure we give value and ensure the sustainability of our water resources in the most costeffective way. PUBs work is very capital intensive, so a key challenge of Creating Value is to find better ways to manage our assets, especially in our plants and networks.

It is the national water agency that manages Singapores water supply, water catchment and used water in an integrated way. PUB prefers to be acknowledged as PUB, Singapores national water agency or PUB, the national water agency and not Public Utilities Board in public communication materials.

About PUB Logo

The PUB corporate logo has been specially designed as one unit, with the relationship of the elements locked in. The elements should not be used separately.

Elements of the Logo

(A) Symbol

The three swirls that form an elliptical shape represents the water cycle, which is an integral part of PUBs business. The three swirls represent the three major functions of PUB i.e. water services, sewerage and drainage. The three different shades of blue in the swirl represent three different types of water i.e. seawater, reclaimed water (NEWater) and catchment water.

(B) Namestyle

The typeface for PUB is specially designed as one unit. It leverages on the fluid and efficient water resource management of which the organisation is well known for.

(C) Tagline

The tagline Water for All: Conserve, Value, Enjoy calls upon all Singaporeans to take ownership of our water resources.

Economical factors The PUB of Singapore has given the major economic importance. The major share of country G.D.P is spent on its industry for the beneficial of the people of Singapore. Social factors This factor is most important factor To this factor the whole project is constitute of for the beneficial of water This project is completely run by the government of Singapore. NEWater has made the significant change in the social apporach of the people by saying and implemnting their project as for the people and to the people. Technological factors In the late 1990s, Singapore looked at recycled water again. By then, technology had stabilized. Membranes, key to water recycling, were cheaper. A demo treatment plant was built. And in 2002, NEWater was born. NEWater is high grade reclaimed water produced from treated used water. It has passed more than thirty thousand scientific tests and surpasses the World Health Organization s requirements. Besides NEWater, PUB also plans and manages Singapore s water resources. We wil see how this is done with the help of technology.

The main consideration is to have resilience and a diversity of a water source. What we have done over the last few yrs was to invest and spend a lot of time on R&D. cos in the search for new sources of water that's a very impt avenue. Technology has come a long way since the whole idea of using purified recycled water came into being. the early experiments were in fact picking up water that is already treated to a high quality. and we purify it further. That was done 15 years ago. over time, technology has improved. and making it possible, membranes, reverse osmosis process, that are very cost effective. so when that came along it was a very natural choice that we look very seriously at highly purified recycled water as another source of a water supply. so that's how newater was born. For newater it comes in 4 different process. The very first stage is what we call ultrafiltration. What is ultrafiltration all about? After we collect all the used water from homes from industry, all this water will be channeled to the water reclamation plant to process for treatment. After this, this will be known as the treated effluent. And this treated effluent will then channeled to newater factory. Then from there they go through the first stage of ultrafiltration. At ultrafiltration we are using membranes from Canada. Just imagine they look like straws. But the very unique thing about this is on the body, it contains very very small pores. We call it the microscopic pores. This pores is about 0.04 micron. Comparing to an average human hair size, is about 1 thousand times smaller. So what happen is through the hollow centre we are using vacuum to draw up the water molecule. Why is it up because the vacuum is from the top. And then at this stage ultrafiltration we will only managed to block away the larger size of contaminants and impurity. Then the water move to next stage, reverse osmosis. Reverse osmosis we are using different type of membrane, comes from US. With a pore size of 0.0001micron. at reverse osmosis we are no longer using vacuum. We are using pressure. To force the water through the membrane. At this stage it will even block away the remaining smaller size of virus, bacteria, contaminants, micro organism and salts and minerals. After this stage reverse osmosis, the quality of this water is so good it has exceeded the guidelines set by the world health organization. We have to have a safety barrier just to make sure everything goes right. We have the third one ultra violet disinfection. The UV disinfection unit comes from UK. In every individual unit there will be 6 UV lights that gives out the temperature of 800 degrees. Now we do know the boiling point of water is 100. So how do we prevent the water from having direct contact with the light? We are going to encase the water in a quartz casing.

After the water has been through the first second and 3rd stage the pH level of the water will drop to acidic level due to the lack of minerals and salt. To prevent corrosion for the pipe, we are going to add in sodium hydroxide so this will bring back the pH level. And this is newater. SWOT Analysis Strengths : This is the only project present in Singapore for the water purification. It is like a Monopoly. It is run by the government with full term qualified and experinced scientists. It is there for the purification of water. It is the only project present in Asia.
