What Does the Word Worship mean and how was it derived form the Greek ,Hebrew and English. Its meaning will amaze you

Worship is an individual adoration of God; it is a one mans band. As we yearn to learn what worship is all about we will start with defining what the term worship mean. The Word Worship defies definition as it is too big a word to define or breakdown fully, in this small book we will learn from whence the worship came from and what is its original meaning.

We will look at how the English Language came up or structured and formed the word worship. The term worship carries several meanings attached to it but when we break its structure we will also understand more and more about worship. 1. Worship comes from two Old English Words combined together which are Worth and ship or scip which then make up Woerthscipe altogether which means to ascribe quality of having worth or to ascribe the quality of being worthy 2. Worship also comes from another set of words Woerdhscipe which means to give recognition to God which He deserves or which is due to His Name. Meritoriousness which basically means worthiness Our ordinary Dictionary explains worship as showing great honour and respect to, praise and pray to God mind you this is what the dictionary states about worship. The Thesaurus explains Worship as respect, adore, cherishing, to respect before a sovereign God

From a Hebrew and Greek point of view the word worship amazes me. Now we are going to focus on how the word worship is translated from Greek and Hebrew with the main focus on understanding what God intended by worship. 1. In the Old Testament Hebrew Bible the word that often used to represent worship is Hishtachawah of which the basic meaning means to bow down in reverence and submission it involves bowing completely before a sovereign as a sign of deep respect, humility and surrender. Reference to this Is 1 kings 1:23 and Nehemiah 8:6 and also Leviticus 9:24 did obeisance (hishtachawah) to the king with his face to the ground kneeling completely 1King s 1:23 2. Worship is also translated from Hebrew Aboda and in Greek it means latreno, and it means service and sacrifice, both words associated with work done in the temple in the Old Testament 3. Another word translated as worship in Greek is Proskyneo and in Hebrew its Shabac both of these words show that worship is a posture of submission to God and to acknowledge God`s sovereignty and also speaks that obeisance requires an attitude of reverential fear.

4. We also see this in another word Homologia which shows that a worshipper should spend time professing faith in God, praising God, thanking God and proclaiming the truth about God. 5. Thusia is another word that brings out worship as a sacrifice and in the New Testament it speaks of self sacrifice so that God may be glorified this is seen in Ephesians 5:2. Philippians 2:17, basically worship is a sacrifice Today we saw that worship is a service as we searched deeper into the words from which the word worship was derived from the Greek and Hebrew words. Worship is a sacrifice, service, its reverence, its submission and humility before a sovereign God The common translation of worship in the Hebrew bible means to bow down, to do homage as seen in Genesis 18:2 and in the Greek language the common reference show utmost reverence (great respect) or bowing down to God and also speaks out that to worship means to minister Worship is also evident in the behaviours of Gonupeteo which means bowing down hishtachawah which means to kiss forward Worship when translated from Hebrew and Greek shows To worship means to serve or to minister
