HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT LET THERE BE NO SCALES TO WEIGH YOUR UNKNOWN TREASURE; AND SEEK NOT THE DEPTHS

OF YOUR KNOWLEDGE WITH STAFF OR SOUNDING LINE. FOR SELF IS A SEA BOUNDLESS AND MEASURELESS. Khalil Gibran

CHAPTER 1 SYLLABUS Human Resource Management Meaning Importance Objectives Functions Process Systems and techniques Role of HR Manager Duties and responsibilities of HR Manager Typical org. set up of HR Department. Human Resource Management INTRODUCTION It is increasingly evident that all the industries and corporate houses are using the human resources to advantageously position themselves in nascent markets. Human resources are the essential tools for any organization since these assets play a major role in either escalating or de-escalating the standing/position of the company. The investment in human resources never go waste provided it is channelized in the right path at the right time. Human resources or the people (working in the organization and for the organization) are the quintessential organs or parts of any organization. Without proper efforts put in by the workforce, the work cannot be completed efficiently. To explain the above said explicitly read the following example Suppose, the production department of a company is well equipped with all the latest machineries and equipments and proper stock is available in the stores to proceed with the manufacturing process of a product. But a product cannot be manufactured until and unless some effort is put in to take the material /stock out of the stores and bring it to the factory and then put it under the process for manufacturing. Here again an argumentative point can be raised that some machines and equipments are fully capable to handle the manufacturing process and in the process of manufacturing such a product, human resources are not required but still no matter how automatic the process is, it still requires human efforts (both, physical and mental) to oversee that things are going as desired.

Hence the need for acquiring and maintaining the human resources cannot be denied and it certainly occupies an important place. Both, the physical as well as the mental effort, of the human resources are very much required to make the company stay and survive in the market. The fall and rise of a company depends on the capabilities of the workforce. Their effectiveness and work quality towards the organization decides the fate of the organization as to how long would the company be able to sustain itself. We cannot measure the intangible efforts of human resources in terms of money and neither can we put these human resources anywhere in the balance sheets to exhibit its importance and value. But what can be witnessed are the skills and talents of human resources, which is the ultimate and final root of all the activities happening in the organization. As a result, the importance of these assets (i.e. human resources) cannot be denied. Meaning & Definition David.A.Decenze and Stephen .P. Robbins has defined Human Resource Management as a process consisting of Acquisition Development Motivation Maintenance of the human resources or the workforce possessed or acquired by the organization. That is Acquisition (acquiring /possessing of people/human resources) Development (developing those human resources who are newly acquired or already possessed by an organization) Motivation (boosting the morale of the human resources for the services rendered by recognizing or giving due credits with the help of monetary or non-monetary rewards). Maintenance (it relates to retaining the human resources. Retaining or maintaining of employees is essential so that maximum work is extracted out of those assets or workforce known as human resources). Therefore its not wrong to say that human resources are the buffers and chains who either pulls or push the company depending upon their performance. What is Management? It is defined as the sum total of planning, organizing, directing, staffing, coordinating and controlling people and their activities in the organization towards better development. It is also defined as an art of getting things done through others. That does not mean that it only focuses on getting activities done &completed with others but also focuses on completing it (those activities) effectively and efficiently.

Definition of HUMAN RESOURCE HR can be defined as Total knowledge Skills Creative abilities Talents Aptitudes of an organizations workforce, as well as the values, attitudes, approaches and beliefs of the individuals involved in the working and shaping the organization. It can be put as the sum total or aggregate of IASi.e. Inherent abilities, Acquired knowledge and Skills, represented by the talents and aptitude of the employed persons in an organization. An organization equipped with the best of resources, best of technology, best of equipments, is nothing, if it fails to fetch and does not acquire and possess the qualified human resource/workforce. What is HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT? Is it MANAGING WORKFORCE / PEOPLE only? The answer is a big NO. HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT means managing not only people BUT also to manage their work, deal with their attitude, mould their behavior according to the requirements best suited to ones organization. All in all if HRM were to be defined, it means that HRM is managing people in totality. Tackling the people in such a way that their assets are highlighted and that reflects in their work or output by way of getting maximum output using minimum inputs or resources, hence capable to turn the organizations standing in the market or capable enough to move the organization towards betterment or positive side. BUT, the question arises as to WHY WOULD PEOPLE CHANGE THEMSELVES FOR ANYBODY? And Do you think it is easy to change? Before giving any answer, think about this. If you receive Love, You also reflect Love, If you receive Respect, You also give back Respect, If you receive a bad attitude, you also react to it. If you receive care, you also show care (The organization takes care of you, loves you, and respects you and your needs by maintaining you and what you desire for i.e. your wishes. And you reflect the same caring and loving attitude shown by

your organization by doing the required amount of work with the best of your abilities, efforts and capacity.) SIMILARLY, ORGANIZATIONS show loving, care, respectful attitude or caring behavior towards its employees by way of Proper designations Gone are the days when people were assigned a designation or a post from a couple of pre-set designations in the organizations. We are witnessing a world with a changed behavior and attitude. Changes are happening in every possible field you can think of. Take for example, the teaching methodology. Earlier, teachers used to be the Sages on the stage but now this no longer exists. Now, in order to impart proper and effective education, the role of the teachers are changing and they can now be seen as guide on the side and assist students in gaining the skills and abilities required to acquire and utilize knowledge contained in various forms around the world. This is so because a sound educational system is quintessential when the question of strengthening the social fabric of a region arises. Similarly, to bring the organization in the proper shape, human resources can be referred to as the artisans of the company who finally matters most for their organization. Due to changes happening everywhere, designations are also made attractive and fancy so as attract workforce to work in an organization. An attractive designation helps in boosting the morale of the person and comforts him of his position in the company. Designations are given importance because it speaks about the standard of the person, his knowledge, and his capabilities, his capacity and last but not the least and certainly, the most important, his class. For example, door to door salesman are referred to as sales executives, which obviously gives a fillip to the morale of the worker and he feel a sense of pride in telling the same. Similarly, a teacher is now a days, referred to as Mentor, which means a wise and trusted guide and advisor. Obviously, being called a Mentor, in todays scenario, not only speaks of respect, but also at the same time sounds trendy as compared to being called a teacher in yesteryears. So, if these little things are taken care of, then the organization as well as the human resources, both will cater to each others needs, thus not only creating a better place to work but will also provide better chances for growth. Better facilities (i.e. perquisites) - If a person is equipped with all the basic amenities in life then he need not worry about the trivial things in life. Likewise if a person/human resource/employee is provided with basic necessities of life, then he would feel good to work and would stay for long in that organization.

For example- providing medical benefits, company quarters, car and telephone allowance to the companys employee. All the organizations do not provide all these but few benefits are given to retain the employees. Recreational activities (for employees immediate family members also) Organizations not only takes care of the personnel it has employed, but also shows a caring gesture towards his/her family members. This attitude, in return helps in keeping the employee satisfied since his family is being taken care of by the company also. Good salary structure (i.e. hefty pay packet) A better pay packet is what an employee initially looks out for in an organization. He requires a good salary structure for himself and his family. If he is able to satiate the desires and wishes of self and family members, then only he will be experiencing a good domestic pleasure, which in turn would keep him away from all the trivial tensions and he would be able to avail bliss. This would help him to stay happy which in turn would trigger the person to achieve targets in the company on time, may be more than expected targets at time. With the advent of Globalization, money seizes to be a problem anywhere; rather money is flooded in the market. Convivial atmosphere to work (i.e. suitable working environment) The organizations should provide its workers a feeling of being a part of the organization rather than doing a part of an organization. If the organization is able to make its employees as its one close knit family, then only people would be willing to work together for the pre-set goals and objectives. Until and unless a person is provided a quality in working life, he would not be at ease and likewise would not be able to exhibit his best efforts. Proper hygienic conditions To keep physical and mental illnesses at bay, adequate care should be taken. Human resources are like the members of one family, that is, the organization. In a family, no one would like to provide any type of health hazard or risk of bad health to any body. Proper and clean drinking water, hygienic food, neat and clean toilets should form the part of the organization. When a person feels clean and healthy, then only he would be in a state to work with full determination and care, thus only adding to better efficiency, concentration and profits for the organization. Attractive ambience (i.e. you feel good to enter your company and its surroundings) Private organization require its workers to work for long hours together unlike public companies or public sector organizations. A private company is literally like a second home to the employees of the private organization. When a person feels fresh throughout the day, then only can he can be expected to be active and alert in his work. As soon as the person enters the office premises, he should get the positive vibes from the entrance gate itself to keep him fresh and active throughout the day. Not only this, it also gives a feeling of pride to the employee and to be the part of such a beautiful and breathtaking organization. Say for example,
