Free road and workplace safety forums

icRoads and the Victorian Road Freight Advisory Council will host a series of five free safety forums for those in the transport industry as part of Freight 2011. VicRoads, WorkSafe, VRFAC and industry experts will offer advice on how you can make your organisation and our roads both safer and more efficient. Victorias 2010 total road toll was 287 and crashes where trucks were involved accounted for 60 deaths which represents 21 percent of all fatalities for this period, said Philip Lovel AM, CEO of the Victorian Transport Association. This is an increase of 20 fatalities, 50 percent, compared to the previous 12-month period. Overall fatal crashes involving heavy vehicles have declined significantly in the past two decades - but more needs to be done. VicRoads Director Vehicle Management and Safety, Don Hogben

said heavy vehicles made a significant contribution to the economy and Victorias liveability through the transport of goods via the road network. We need to make sure that all vehicles are sharing the roads safely and VicRoads is committed to working with the transport industry and the community to reduce the incidence of crashes involving heavy vehicles, he said. Knowledge and education are key components in ensuring that when vehicles are used on the roads, they are safe for use and used in a safe manner, said Mr Hogben. The safety forums will bring road and workplace safety awareness to regional communities where many serious heavy vehicle crashes are happening on high-speed rural roads. Mr Lovel commented that it is not only road statistics that are a concern for the transport industry, with WorkSafe reporting that manual

handling injuries are the largest category of claims for truck drivers and are costing millions of dollars in claims. he Toll Group plans to acquire a 40% share of one of the largest third-party logistics service providers in Chinas automotive market, Tianjin Anda Logistics. The Chinese automotive market is the largest in the world and offers immense opportunities for Toll to leverage our industry leading automotive capabilities, said Toll Group Managing Director, Paul Little AO. The market grew 32% in 2010 to record sales of 18.6 million vehicles compared to 11.8 million in the US. In the future, motor vehicle sales will be supported by strong economic growth, the current low rate of car

ownership (50 cars per 1000 people in China versus over 750 in USA) and government investment in road infrastructure. Importantly for Toll Group, manufacturers in China are increasingly demanding a more efficient and effective supply chain. Our joint venture with Tianjin Anda allows us to partner with a leading local company to provide those services in a proven and cost effective manner. Tianjin Anda provides finished vehicle transport, storage and processing services for leading brands such as FAW, Toyota, BMW, PeugeotCitroen and Chery. It is based in the

city of Tianjin, a major manufacturing centre and Chinas largest import terminal, which is close to Beijing and well connected to the main national highways, said Mr Little. Last year, Tianjin Anda generated revenue of over RMB 400 million (AUD58m). Through this acquisition, Toll will initially acquire 40% of the privately owned business with the option of moving to a majority stake over the next two years and to increase that further over five years. Tolls acquisition remains subject to Chinese regulatory approvals which are expected to take three to six months.

Fuso shows strength in growth markets

itsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation (MFTBC) has continued to strengthen its position in growth markets over the last few months. During May the company entered the Mongolian market and also sold its 1000th truck in Russia. The 1000th Canter light truck rolled off the production line roughly a year after truck assembly began at the Fuso Kamaz Trucks Rus (FKTR) manufacturing facility in Naberezhnye Chelny. FKTR is a joint venture, in which Kamaz and Daimler AG each have a 50 percent stake. The joint venture was set up in late 2009 to handle importation, production and distribution operations for Fuso trucks in Russia. At the same time, Fuso has also

become the no. 2 Japanese brand in the light truck segment in Russia. This was aided by the constant expansion of the distribution network in Russia last year, bringing the total number of locations to 50. We are just getting started in the key Russian market, said Dr Albert Kirchmann, Fusos Head of Trucks Asia. We see great potential for our products here, especially as the Russian economy becomes more diversified with greater focus on services. Fusos presence in neighbouring Mongolia is also another big step for Fuso, taking the company one step closer to achieving its strategic goal of international expansion into key markets with growth potential. Initially Fuso will offer the Canter light-duty truck and Fighter medium-

duty truck in Mongolia. These trucks are being exported from Japan and sold through the dealer network of Mongolian Star Melchers Co., Ltd. (MSM), which is headquartered in the Mongolian capital of Ulaanbaatar. We see solid economic growth potential in Mongolia, said Kai-Uwe Seidenfuss, MFTBC Vice President of Sales and Service International, at a ceremony marking the delivery of the first ten Canter trucks to MCS CocaCola LLC in Ulaanbaatar on May 16. he new Coalition Government in NSW has announced a new Integrated transport authority to coordinate the states transport services. The announcement, made by Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian and Roads and Ports Minister Duncan Gay, said the new authority

will handle policy issues currently developed by the RTA, Rail Corp and Sydney Buses. One of the new divisions of the authority will be focused on freight and regional development. Instead of operating in silos, the RTA will now be at the core of an integrated system that will ensure

planning for the states future roads and transport systems will be in a strategic and holistic way, said Minister Gay in the announcement. For the first time there will be a minister with the role of coordinating freight from farm to port and from ship to shop.
