Alt Styles Reading Session Notes 1. JD Meets the Rhythm Section, Randy Sabien (gr. 4) Great for high school, has written solos for violin, viola, cello, bass. C minor (so tough for middle school), nice groove, teaching piece, violin parts don't go above 3rd pos! 2nd violin little boring. Also has chords written for improv 2. Shuffleupagus, Matt Turner (gr. 1.5) Bass part repetitive but could teach kids to use ghost notes and add embellishments, 2nds and violas OK rhythm section style, good piece to teach kids to phrase and say Doo-Ba, low 1st finger, extended 4th for cello, could add improv in middle parts (but stick to chord changes possibly make supplemental sheet for kids to follow), syncopated rhythms are in unison 3. Bossa Nova Triste, Mary Alice Rich (easy part gr. 5, advanced gr. 2) Good piece to use for multi-level ensemble or festival performance, easy open strings for beginner players, no rhythm section parts except EGG SHAKER, no chops/embellishments needed 4. Rocky's Rock, Steve Burch (gr. 2) Boring viola and 2nd part, nice position for bass, good rock beat to teach distortion? 5. Smoke on the Water, arr. Larry Moore (gr. 2) Could be very fun, distorted, solo in middle, ask guitar player to solo and have drumset, electric instruments 6. Twin Sisters, arr. Julie Lyon Lieberman (gr. 3) D minor, has triplets, nice piece, good viola, not so-inspirational. Celtic = no swing! 7. Beaumont Rag, arr. Tim McCarrick (gr. 3) 1sts, cellos, and bass have some solo parts, could easily spice up 2nd and viola parts by adding a Double-Shuffle w/ string crossings, fast little

piece!! 8. Purple Haze, arr. Larry Moore (gr. 2.5 or 3 ) USE DISTORTION!! Either electric violin solo or all parts electrified, rock out cellos!! Headbanging highly encouraged :-) 9. Dance Fever, Thom Sharp (gr. 3-4) for string quartet, very cute suite!!! 1) At the Disco two flats, cute, rock beat, awesome for high school 2) Lindybug C Major, some extensions, advanced middle school could maybe play!! 3) Samba Sunset pizz cello (bass player could read up octave or just read the low D up octave, could have solo part in it 4) Wedding Waltz nice flow in cello part, F Major, 5) Tango Tangerine little tougher because of C minor, tons shifting possible, has quarter note triplets 10. Don't Get Around Much Anymore, Robert Gardner (gr. 3) very cute swing piece, great for slides, phrasing/vocalizing, classic piece!! Chords were written, solo part possible 11. Steel City Strut, Danny Seidenberg (gr. 4.5) holy crap, AWESOME, but way too hard for middle school, great slides and ghost notes and chops possible! Goes from 9/8 to 12/8 to 4/4, etc. Complex to the max!!! 12. Blue Ox Blues, Dean Sorensen (gr. 2) Not as good, needs little spice in middle section, no written bass line in solo part 13. Jazz Basics for Strings, Robert Woods (gr. 2 or 3) Now that we know something about this, we like this this series works with Jamey Aebersold Vol. 24. 14. Bossa Azul, by Bert Ligon (gr. 3) GREAT 2nd violin part very playable!! WE ALL LIKE IT! 15. Li'l Darlin' arr. Darol Anger (gr 2) not for middle school because of the key. Good written out solos. A little repetitive. 16. Mambo Amable by Thom Sharp (gr 1) Great for young ones! Nice viola part!!! Chop opportunity... percussion parts 17. Stairway to Heaven, arr. Bob Phillips (gr 2) Good doesn't include the fast part, but we could figure that out. Nice sharing of melody parts. You would need to go ponticello or spice it up a little? 18. Fourth\Dimension, by Randy Sabien (gr 3) Needs drumset to get the groove going. It's cool. 19. At Last, arr. Roszell (gr 3) not so much. Not bad, but not arranged well for strings, and it needs the piano accomp to flesh out internal rhythms. 20. Don't Get Around Much Anymore, arr. Ralph Ford (gr? 2-ish) not so much on this one. Violin1, optional 2 plays with viola. No solo. No melody for anyone other than violin 1 21. Cayo Coco by Thom Sharp (gr 4) good rhythm workout. Not my favorite Thom Sharp piece needs percussion to make it really groove. But, good for sight reading.

22. Kashmir arr. Tim McCarrin (gr. 3) really good! Lots of opportunity for solos. From Daryl's friend Tom Hudson (teaching in McAllen, TX email him a thanks!) Sweet Child of Mine Through the Fire and Flames (Dragonforce Guitar Hero) Welcome Home (Coheed and Cambria) From JWPepper Lady Gaga Hit Mix - #10185390 - arr. Larry Moore $50 med/easy (a little boring?) Viva La Vida - #10073522 arr. Moore med/easy (ending not cool?) Don't Stop Believing - # 10185398 arr.Robert Longfield med/easy (better than Phillips version?) Thriller - # 10078276 - arr. Longfield easy (needs drum) James Taylor in Concert arr. Lopez (not so much...) Wizard of Oz arr. Cerulli - # 10032809 - good arrangements, nice melody sharing, ending needs help... Power Rock, arr.
