AMERICAN REFUGEE COMMITTEE

Refuge, Recovery, Rebuilding
WHO WE ARE The American Refugee Committee (ARC) is an international nonprofit, nonsectarian organization that has provided humanitarian assistance to millions of refugees over the last 30 years. OUR MISSION ARC works with its partners to provide opportunities and expertise to refugees, displaced people and host communities. We help people survive conflict and crisis and rebuild lives of dignity, health, security and self-sufficiency. ARC is committed to the delivery of programs that ensure measurable quality and lasting impact for the people we serve. OUR WORK Today, ARC works in 7 countries around the world helping victims of war and civil conflict rebuild their lives. ARC bases its relationship with uprooted peoples on mutual respect and a compassionate exchange of knowledge and values. ARC PROGRAMS ARC programs are built by listening to the people we serve, understanding existing problems, designing practical responses, and training survivors to continue the work after peace is restored. ARC works in the following world regions: SudanSudan-Darfur: Currently, ARC runs 16 primary
health clinics, repairs or builds one water yard and one new well per month, and assists farmers with seeds, tools, training, care of livestock, and development of community gardens. ARCs boatbuilding project empowers fishing villages of Thailand after the 2004 tsunami.

Sierra Leon: ARC operates a microfinance institution (MFI) in Sierra Leone called Finance Salone. Finance Salone provides small loans and business training to entrepreneurs trying to start and grow small businesses.

Thailand: ARC provides health care services, health education, and water, sanitation and environmental health services.

Liberia: ARC provides small business training and loan services, helps communities combat gender-based violence, and gives communities the tools and support they need to rebuild their homes, schools, markets, and other infrastructure. Pakistan: After the massive earthquake of October, 2005, ARC began operating in the northern part of the country, providing emergency health care, supplies, shelter and food aid. Today, ARC is still helping people in this remote region of Pakistan with health care and community mobilization services. Rwanda: ARC manages all three major refugee
camps in Rwanda, providing health care, water, construction, and sanitation services as well as programs combating gender-based violence and HIV/AIDS.

Uganda: Today, ARC manages 14 IDP (internally displaced persons) camps in the northern Gulu District of Uganda. Were also helping people make the transition back home: building new houses, offering business loans and livelihood training, and ensuring continued health services.
