Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. 18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Mat 5:17-18 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: 19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. Rev 22:18 -19 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? Gen 3:1 But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction 2Pe 2:1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; 1Ti 4:1 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. :14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. :15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works. 2Co 11:13 -15 The issue of which Bible version has come up in and among new Church members of Faith Baptist Church. Not only are we followers of the King James Version of 1611, individually, but also as a Church. We have constituted that all Pastors, and teachers of Faith Baptist Church, including any guests speakers will only use the King James Version from our platform... so the question is, why do we use this version? Is it not difficult to understand and read, surely the other Bibles are acceptable? I am going to deal with this issue in this manner: 1. What is the Bible? 2. Where did it come from? 3. What is the issue at hand? 4. Give practical examples of the discrepancies You will discover that the issue of Bible versions is not about our current mother tongues, nor about being easier to read or hear but rather about which text was used in the translating of the Bible. You will discover that the basis of the King James Version, is the received text and also the correct text to use. You will conclude with me that The King James Version is the best English version available!

What is the Bible?

A. The Bible can be argued from several view points, namely: 1. The character of the Bible This book recognizes the personality, unity, and trinity of God; it magnifies the holiness and love of God; it accounts for the creature as a direct creation of God, made in the likeness of God; it represents mans fall as a free revolt against the free will of God; it pictures sin as inexcusable and under the judgment of eternal punishment; it teaches the sovereign rule of God in the universe;; it sets forth in great detail Gods provision of salvation and the conditions on which it may be experienced; it delineates the purposes of God concerning Israel and the Church; it forecasts the developments of the world of the world, socially; politically; economically, and religiously; it portrays the culmination of all things in the second coming of Christ; the resurrections; the judgments; the millennium; and the eternal stare. Surely this book comes from the hand of an infinite God. H.C Thiessen Systematic Theology Pg 46 One amazing characteristics of the Bible is its unity. The Bible is composed of 66 Books. 39 in the Old testament and 27 in the New testament. Yet those 66 books form a cohesive whole, one dynamic message of Gods dealings with humankind Josh MacDowell Answers 5 tough questions pg 5 2. The influence of the Bible The Bible has produced the highest levels in all walks of life. It has led to the highest type of creation in the fields of art, architecture, literature and music. The fundamental laws of nations have been influenced; great social reforms have been madethere has been the impact of the regenerating effect of millions of individual lives. H.C Thiessen Pg 47 3. Fulfilled prophecy Only God can reveal the future, and prophecy as it is relates to predictions is a miracle of knowledge.. If we can demonstrate that the Old testament prophecies have been fulfilled in every particular, then we can prove divine revelation. H.C Thiessen Pg 47 4. Its accuracies Within the pages of the Bible are countless references to events, people and places. The science of Archeology and historical records have repeatedly confirmed the precision of the references in the various biblical books. .Whenever the Biblical writers touch on scientific matters, their observations about nature, man, history and society are generally accurate and free from of the ancient and unsophisticated inaccuracies of their contemporaries. Josh MacDowell Answers 5 tough questions pg 7-8

5. Its indestructibility The fact that the text of the bible has survived throughout history is a wonderful testimony of the preserving power of God. The Scriptures have survived time, persecution and criticism. Josh MacDowell Answers 5 tough questions pg 7 6. The claims of the Scriptures themselves That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour: 2Pe 3:2 The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying, Jer 11:1 If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord. 1Co 14:37 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. 2Pe 1:21 B. What does the Bible consist of? 1. The Bible consists of 66 Books 2. Old Testament consist of 39 Books, and the 3. New testament consists of 27 Books 4. Written over a period of 1600 yrs 5. Had 40 Authors, who all came from a variety of educational and cultural settings: i. Joshua was a general ii. Daniel was a prime minister iii. Nehemiah was a court servant (Scribe) iv. Amos was a shepherd v. Luke was a physician vi. Paul was a Rabbi vii. Peter and John were fishermen C. Who sanctioned the Bible as we know it today? 1. Externally The Churches did - Rome at 397A.D 3rd counsel of Carthage 2. Internally i. God did (Ex 32:16 .. and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables.) ii. Moses did (Ex 24.4 And Moses wrote all the words of the LORD..) iii. The Prophets did. (I.e Isaiah Thus says the Lord..Isa 43:1, it is claimed that

3800 similar claims are made throughout the Old Testament) iv. The Apostles did Peter claimed that he wrote the commandments of God 2 Pet 3:2 The force of the evidence is cumulative. If we weigh separately the arguments ..we may not find any of them conclusive; but if we permit each argument to contribute to its modicum of truth, we shall be forced to the conclusion that the Bible is the embodiment of a divine revelation. H.C Thiessen Pg 49 However I personally disagree with his summation from a Christian perspective as I realize the truthfulness of Romans 10:17, as the Scriptural internal evidence is sufficient unto itself. D. Where did the Bible come from? 1. The canonicity of the Bible i. Specifically a reed or rod ii. A measuring stick iii. In other words a rule or standard iv. An authoritative decision of a church counsel As applied to the Bible, it means those books which have been measured, found satisfactory, and approved inspired of God H.C Thiessen Pg 59 2. The Old testament It is generally accepted (view of David Kimchi 1160-1232 and Elias Levita 1465-1549 , two Jewish scholars, held) that the final collections of the Old testament was completed by Ezra and the members of the Great synagogue in the 5th century before Christ. Josephus , who wrote at the end of the 1st century places the orders and collections of the books in the same combination and order as the Masoretic Canon ..and they spake unto Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses,.. Neh 8:1 This Ezra went up from Babylon; and he was a ready scribe in the law of Moses,.. :11. gave unto Ezra the priest, the scribe, even a scribe of the words of the commandments of the LORD.. . Ezr 7:6,11 3. The New testament The New testament was not a result of organized effort to produce such..seemed to shape itself as a result of the obviously genuine character of the books H.C Thiessen Pg 60

4. Several broad principals aided in determine canonicity: i. Apostolicity/ Authorship or someone who had a close relationship to ii. Suitability to public reading iii. Local Church acceptance iv. Church fathers recognition (i.e Polycarp was taught by John) v. The contents being of a spiritual nature vi. Evidence of Holy Spirit inspiration 5. By the end of the 5th century, all books were considered accepted i. By the west in 382 A.D Damasine counsel of Rome & 397 3rd counsel of Carthage ii. By the Greeks by 5th century It is interesting to note that God did not need the stamp of approval of the Churches of Rome to place its stamp of approval upon His completed Word! ..it must be understood that the bible is not an authorized collection of books, but rather a collection of authorized books. In other words, the twenty seven New testament books were not inspired because the Cathage Council proclaimed them to be, but rather the Council proclaimed them to be such because they were already inspired Wilmingtons guide to the bible Pg 805 II. What is the issue at hand? A. Where are the originals? The books of the Old testament were considered special by the Jews..They were Gods Word communicated to His people great care was taken to preserve the text precisely as they were written. B. Old Testament That Moses commanded the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, saying, 26 Take this book of the law, and put it in the side of the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, that it may be there for a witness against thee. Deu 31:25 -26 1. The priests of Israel were responsible for the preservation of Gods word 2. The kings of Israel were to keep a copy at hand to rule Gods people Deut 17:18-19 3. From the time of Ezra 400 B.C till the time of the Masorites 500 A.D a group of Scribes known as the Sopherim (counters) were responsible for the copying of the text. (The name was derived form the fact that they counted the number of words and letters and com-

pared it to the original, thereby ensuring the accuracy of the copies) 4. The Masorites then took over from the Sopherim, and continued the preservation of the Old testament till 900 A.D. (They not only meticulously preserved the Old testament but also introduce the Hebrew vowel system to aid in pronunciation and marginal aids to assist the reader in understanding. They also preserved all the alternative readings of the texts) 5. Why are there so few originals or copies available? The Jews would collect all the old worn out copies and collect them in a special room known as a Genizah. Once several copies were collected, they would be buried in a grave of some scholar. The Jews believed this would prevent or protect readers from misreading Gods Word. 6. The latest discoveries of the Dead Sea scrolls in 1947, having scrolls and parchments (dating between 100 B.C to A.D 68 ) the oldest copies available at that time dating 1000 A.D, proved the accuracies of all textual evidence available. In other words we have a copy that is 100% accurate. The errors that we face as far as textual criticisms is concerned is not to be found in the Old Testament but the New, as we will see as we continue this study: C. New testament The New Testament is different to the Old as we do not have any form of original copies available, so we are reliant on copies of copies, and consequently there developed a science called textual criticism. All this means is that they have to piece together the evidence and construct the original texts. In the case of the New Testament we derive the facts from Greek manuscripts, early non Greek versions and Church fathers. It is Gods providence that there are many manuscripts available, unlike the Old Testament There were different forms of evidence: Papyri, uncial manuscripts, minuscule manuscripts and lectionaries. Composing of the following numbers and dates: Type Papyri Uncial Script (Capital letters) Codex vaticanus Codex Sinaiticus Codex Alexandrinus Names Date 400 A.D 400 -1000 330 330 450 50 Copies 96 267

Codex Ephraemi Rescriptus Uncial started being replaced by minuscule as early as 9th century

Minuscule Script was easier to write so more material available Lectionaries - portions of Scripture

Different versions - translations of the New testament into other languages Latin Vulgate Ethiopic Slavic Armenian Syriac Peshitta Bohairic Although not written in Greek, it is still evidence for the accuracy of the texts 1. The Church Fathers was the 3rd source of evidence 2. It is through quotations in letters, sermons and general writings that evidence is drawn from For example Ignatius A.D 70 -110 wrote seven letters and quoted from 18 different books of the New Testament 3. There is so much evidence from the Church fathers available, had we lost the versions and manuscripts there is enough evidence to rewrite the bible comfortably Although we do not posses the original manuscripts of any of the books of the New testament, the evidence that has been transcribed accurately through history is over whelming J osh MacDowell Pg 39 So, what does this all mean? It means that the bible has been compiled through diligent researching and authentication, and put together in a completed New Testament as we know it today. Known as the Received Text, which is the basis for the King James Bible! III. What is the issue really at hand? Simply stated - IT IS ABOUT THE SOURCE TEXT! 382 350 900 406 10 000 2000 4101 2587 350 100

The bases to the Received Text (also known as majority text) is the accumulation of all forms of text, cross referenced and found to be accurate, and compiled (received). The source text to the of New translations today are taken mainly from the Codex Sinaiticus, which was discovered in 1844 by Constantine Von Tischendorf in St Catherines monastery at the foot of Mt Sinai. It is thought to have been dated to the 4th century and to have come from Egypt. The other source documents used in modern translations is the Vaticanus, which was discovered by Von Tischendorf in the Vatican library, it too was thought to have been from the mid 4th century and to have originated from Egypt. The translators of the NIV call the Sinaiticus and the Vaticanus the two most reliable early manuscripts extractions D. Cloud The Bible version issue Pg 28 The accumulation of all forms of modern textual criticism that was drawn from these source documents by Westcott and Hort, which incidentally contained the Alexandrian Text, produced the Westcott - Hort Greek text, which in turn became their source documents Dr. Donald A. Waite a Baptist scholar who has written extensively in the defense of the Received Text. He has a B.A. in classical Greek and Latin; a Th.M. with high honors in New Testament Greek Literature and Exegesis; an M.A. and Ph.D. in Speech; a Th.D. with honors in Bible Exposition; and he holds both New Jersey and Pennsylvania teacher certificates in Greek and Language Arts. He taught Greek, Hebrew, Bible, Speech, and English for more than 35 years in nine schools. He has produced more than 700 studies on the Bible and other subjects. In summarizing the problem with the Westcott-Hort Text, Dr. Waite notes: Westcott and Hort concocted a new Greek text and changed the Received Text that had been used in the Church from the beginning of the writing of the New Testament Waite, Defending the King James Bible, 1992, p. 41 It is interesting to note that, from Gods view, Egypt (Alexandra) was portrayed as wicked and worldly. And nothing of any value was to be gained from it To judge by the comments made by Clements of Alexandra every deviant Christian sect was represented in Egypt during the second century.. What proportions of Christians in Egypt were orthodox is not known. Metzer, the early versions of the New testament P 101 Let it be said again: Alexandria was the worst possible place to go for a bible! Yet, that is precisely the place that our present day translators have gone in gathering the major sources of the modern Bible Jack Moorman, Modern Bible Versions: The dark secret. Give practical examples of the discrepancies

The list demonstrated is not exhaustive by any means but rather an inkling of the issue at hand, the author is unknown. But it certainly demonstrates the short comings of the usage of the oldest text available as the modern critics would claim . It must be clearly understood that the purpose of this study is not to cast doubt on Gods Word, but rather to have you understand that not all that proclaim to be the Words of God, are in fact so. It must also be understood that the original writings were inspired and without error. It is in the translations and the text source documents that human error has crept in. Some with direct intentions, while others through direct equivalency (in other words a direct literal translation was sought, in so doing some of the sentence structure is not true to its form but rather the concept and point is brought to bear). It is the main purpose of this small exercise to have the Church to understand the reasons behind Faith Baptist Church using and holding to the KING JAMES VERSION! A. TRYANSWERING THESE QUESTIONS FROM THE N.IV INSTRUCTIONS: Do not rely on your memory. As the Bible is the final authority, you must take the answer from the bible verse (not from footnotes but from the text) 1. Fill in the missing words in Matthew 5:44 Love your enemies, .them that curse you,... To them that hate you,., and pray for them ..and persecute you 2. In reality, the New King James Version is simply a bridge to the modern versions. Those who move away from the standard King James Bible to the New King James are lulled into a sense of security that they have moved merely to an updated and improved King James, but actually they are being brainwashed to be weaned away from the King James altogether and to accept the modern versions. The Preface to the New King James Version (NKJV) reads, A special feature of the New King James Version is ITS CONFORMITY to the thought flow of the 1611 Bible. . . the new edition, while much clearer ARE SO CLOSE to the traditional. . . Among the first changes that greets the reader of the NKJV is the removal of the much maligned thee, thou and ye. The Preface to the NKJV states, . . .thee, thou, and ye are replaced by the simple you,. . .These pronouns are no longer part of our language. But thee, thou and ye were NO LONGER part of the language during 1611 either. (just read the intro to the 1611 King James, there are no thee, thou and ye). In fact, Websters Third New International Dictionary, says of ye: used from the earliest of times to the late 13th century. . . (p.2648) And yet the 1611 King James was published 400 years later in the 17th century!

So why are they there?

11

The Greek and Hebrew language contain a different word for the second person singular and the second person plural pronouns. Today we use the one-word you for both the singular and plural. But because the translators of the 1611 King James Bible desired an accurate, word-for-word translation of the Hebrew and Greek text they could NOT use the one-word you throughout! If it begins with t (thou, thy, thine) its SINGULAR, but if it begins with y (ye) its PLURAL. Ads for the NKJV call it the Accurate One, and yet the 1611 King James, by using thee, thou, ye, is far more accurate! By the way, if the thees and thous are . . .no longer part of our language - why arent the NKJV translators rushing to make our hymnbooks much clearer? How Great Thou Art to How Great You Are, or Come Thou Fount to Come You Fount Doesnt sound right, does it? Isnt it amazing that they wouldnt dare correct our hymns - and yet, without the slightest hesitation, theyll correct the word of God! The NKJV claims to make the old KJV much clearer by updating obsolete words (New King James Version, 1982e. p. 1235 Over 20 years ago I attended a pre-publication meeting of the NKJV held by the Thomas Nelson People and hosted by the Hackmans Bible Bookstore in Allentown, PA. .. over 300 college professors and pastors attended. A slide presentation of the history of the English bible and in particular the King James Bible and its several revisions shown. During the presentation of the NKJV the Thomas Nelson representative made a statement which to the best of my memory was, We are all educated people here. We would never say this to our people, but we all know that the King James Version is a poor translation based on poor texts. But every attempt to give your people a better Bible has failed. They just wont accept them. So we have gone back and done a revision of the King James Version, a fifth revision. Hopefully it will serve as a transitional bridge to eventually get your people to accept a more accurate Bible. Kirk DiVietro, Pastor of Grace Baptist Church in Franklin, Massachusetts . Those who use the New King James Bible are therefore subjected to the same onslaught of potential doubt as those who use the New International Version or some other modern edition of the Bible. Many claim that the critical notes that question the authenticity of the Bible text are not harmful to readers. We believe this is nonsense. I saw the fruit of this questioning in my own life before I was grounded in the issue of Gods Preserved Scripture and before I understood the unbelieving foundation of modern textual criticism. Before I went to Bible School I read my Bible carefully, word by word, and I did not doubt or question even one tittle. After I completed a course in New Testament Greek and was taught by a professor that the Received Text and the KJV are not based on the most dependable scholarship, I found myself questioning large portions of the Bible. I would like someone to explain to me how such confusion builds strong Christian lives and churches D. Cloud comments

Genesis 2:18: The NKJV ought to make Hillary Clinton proud: And the Lord God said, It is not good that man should be alone; I will make a helper COMPARABLE TO HIM Genesis 22:8: One of the greatest verses in the Bible proclaiming that Jesus Christ was God in the flesh: God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: The NKJV adds that little word for: God will provide for Himself the lamb for a burnt offering And destroys the wonderful promise! Whered they get their little for? From the NASV! Genesis 24:47: The old KJV reads: I put the earring upon her face. But the NKJV has different plans for beautiful Rebekah: I put the nose ring on her nose. Where did it get the ridiculous idea to cannibalize Rebekah? Just take a peek at the NIV, NASV, RSV, NRSV! Ezra 8:36: The KJV reads, And they delivered the kings commissions unto the kings lieutenants. . . The much clearer NKJV reads, And they delivered the kings orders to the kings satraps. . . Matthew 12:40: change whale to fish (ditto NIV) I dont guess it matters (whats the truth got to do with it?), the Greek word used in Matthew 12:40 is ketos. And most will match the NIV, NASV, RSV, or RSV!

And Thomas Nelson Publishers have the audacity to claim in an ad for the NKJV (Moody Monthly, June 1982, back cover), NOTHING HAS BEEN CHANGED except to make the original meaning clearer. The New King James is a COUNTERFEIT! Its NOT NEW! The changes are already in the NIV, NASV, NRSV, or RSV! And its certainly NOT true to the 1611 King James Bible! (Extracted off the Internet, author unknown) 1 CORINTHIANS 1:18 KJV: For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. NKJV: but to us who are BEING saved it is the power of God. This change wrongly implies that salvation is a process. HEBREWS 2:16 KJV - For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham (Hebrews 2:16). NKJV - For indeed He does not give aid to angels, but He does give aid to the seed of Abraham (Hebrews 2:16). This change weakens the doctrine of Christ. The Greek says nothing about giving aid to. The Greek word is epilambanomai, which means to lay hold of, to seize, to catch, to take. HEBREWS 3:16 KJV For some, when they had heard, did provoke: howbeit not all that came out of Egypt by Moses. NKJV For who, having heard, rebelled? Indeed, was it not all who came out of Egypt, led by Moses? This change in the NKJV creates an error in the Bible, because the Old Testament plainly teaches that not all of the Israelites rebelled and provoked God. The KJV is right in its teaching here and the NKJV is wrong. CONCLUSION The New King James Version is not an improvement over the King James and is not merely another slight revision after the fashion of earlier revisions. Be wise and beware and stand by the old KJV. Its hard to read, you say? Its really not that hard. Most of the words are one or two syllables, and it has a very small vocabulary. The reading level of the King James Bible, in fact, is not that much different from the New International Version. If you will devote to the KJV the serious study that it deserves, you will soon find that it is not that difficult. As the late Evangelist Lester Roloff said, We dont need to re-translate the Bible; we need to re-read and re-study the excellent one we have. Amen. We of Faith Baptist Church will whole heartedly follow the King James Bible , till Christ comes! Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. :12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.
