Innovative and versatile

Even at first glance, this brand new range of machines has a look of reliability and technology about it. Whether ploughing or seeding, cropspraying or harvesting, transporting at speed or manoeuvring around the yard, models of the new IRON range provide professional users with an all-purpose tractor, equal to the demands of medium-large agricultural enterprises, and the needs of contractors. Dependable Deutz 4 or 6 cylinder engines convert horsepower into productivity, by operating in conjunction with effective hi-tech systems such as the 50 km/h-rated Powershift*, shift-onthe-go hydraulic shuttle and electronic lift system with radar. Other innovative solutions are dedicated to comfort. The new cab with self-adjusting suspension and automatic air conditioning, the driving seat with integrated multifunction joystick, and the cushioned front axle, for example all combine to ensure a superior level of operator satisfaction. Choice in the IRON range is extended further by Hi-Line versions, which offer an even more attractive set of standard-issue features, with technologically advanced solutions appreciated typically by agricultural contractors, and by farm businesses looking to maximize output and profits.
where applicable, *top speed limited by law to 40 km/h, in both normal and economy operating modes.

Engines: a generation of winners

Deutz Common Rail (DCR), Exhaust Gas Recirculation system (EGR), turbo with intercooler, electronic fuel injection, dual liquid/oil cooling system and fuel cooler, for improved overall combustion efficiency. These are just some of the key features offered in the new DEUTZ 2012 series Euro III engines, installed in IRON machines.

IRON

Thanks to the brand new high-pressure common rail fuel injection system (IRON 115 and 125) using two wet pumps embedded in the cylinder block, and new combustion chambers in the piston crowns, the engine is able to deliver consistently high levels of efficiency even in the toughest of conditions. More exactly, the common rail system delivers maximum injection pressures up to 1600 bar, independent of engine revolutions, and this flexibility combined with electronic regulation ensures excellent torque rise even at low crankshaft speeds. The result: lower noise levels at both idling and nominal engine speeds, higher starting torque, fewer vibrations and predictably steady fuel consumption. The innovative electronic engine management system analyses information from the engine, the sensors and the cab controls, then processes it to deliver the power you need, the moment you need it. Maximum power remains constant over a wide band of engine speeds. So when engine speed drops as a result of increased load, not only does torque increase, keeping traction constant, but specific fuel consumption drops too, dramatically improving economy. In ploughing and heavy trailer work, these characteristics convert into the improved tractive force and elasticity you need for maximum productivity. With the EGR system, finally, the release of exhaust gases is controlled, and a proportion of the flow is directed back into the combustion chambers. Benefits of EGR are better management of exhaust gases, and reduced NOx (Nitrogen Oxides) emissions.

In addition, the engine features an efficient air cleaning system of cross flow design utilizing a layered structure of nanofibre elements, guaranteeing effective filtration of contaminants down to particle sizes of 2 microns. Similarly, the engine is equipped with a technologically innovative cooling system: five radiator and cooler units are arranged in series (engine coolant, transmission oil, diesel fuel, intercooler and aircon condenser), so as to maximize the exposure of the cooling surfaces to air while keeping the overall dimensions of the assembly to a minimum. An exclusive hinged mounting system allows the radiators to pivot outwards for easy cleaning and maintenance.

IRON

BioDiesel
100%
Thanks to a number of unique design features, the use of first-rate materials in construction, and a special conversion kit, the engines of IRON models are able to ensure absolute functional efficiency and total compatibility with biodiesel fuel, allowing blend ratios of up to 100% (biodiesel responding to the specifications of EN 14214:2003). Biodiesel typically has a higher viscosity than other engine fuels and is chemically more aggressive, but Deutz engines are equipped with a special fuel injection system utilizing immersed pumps - one to each single injector - and a fuel feed circuit with components manufactured from special materials, and consequently able to run on these new fuels without difficulty.

High speed, low cost

Models of the IRON range have a transmission designed specifically to handle every kind of situation - in the fields, around the yard and on the road. In particular, since transport and transit between fields tend to account for a large proportion of the work done by this kind of tractor, the gearbox has been designed to give a top speed of 50 km/h. This means that in countries where 50 km/h is not permitted, the machine can run at 40 km/h with the engine operating either at full power or in economy mode, bringing huge benefits in terms of fuel saving and component life. Use of the transmission is simple and intuitive, thanks to a handy shift lever - neat and stubby, with a short throw allowing swift and precise selection of the 24 forward and 8 reverse speeds (36+12 with creeper range), compounded from a 4-speed synchromesh gearbox with 3 powershift ratios and 2 electrohydraulically operated ranges. Pressing and holding the button on the

front of the lever, the 4 synchromesh gears can be shifted without using the clutch pedal, whilst the range can be changed - on the go - by pressing a second button on the side of the lever. This new system dispenses with the traditional range lever, while allowing the driver to shift simply and effortlessly between 4th Low and 1st High: press the range shift button, depress the clutch pedal, move the gearshift lever from 4th Low to 1st High, and finally release the clutch pedal.

When changing from one range to another, the powershift responds automatically, selecting exactly the right ratio on the basis of the current ground speed. On Hi-Line versions, the transmission can be switched to Automatic Powershift for maximum driving comfort. In this instance, whatever the speed selected, the gears are shifted automatically in response to power output and prevailing load. In addition, a thumbwheel control in the armrest can be used by the driver to select performance mode, for a slick and sporty automatic shift, or alternatively economy mode, which will favour fuel consumption. Driveability of the IRON is enhanced further by a clutchless hydraulic reverse shuttle: this is a device that renders the switch between forward and reverse smooth and effortless, particularly when making headland turns or manoeuvring in restricted spaces. The shuttle also works on slopes, at speeds up to 12 km/h, and is operated by a handy lever under the steering wheel, without using the clutch pedal. On Hi-Line versions, the shuttle control is also wired to the multifunction joystick, which incorporates two buttons for the selection of forward and reverse.

Strong, steady implement control

IRON tractors have a 4-speed rear PTO (540/540ECO and 1000/1000ECO) with oil-immersed multi-disc clutch and modulating electrohydraulic control. This allows IRON models to operate with all kinds of implements attached, while guaranteeing maximum efficiency and low fuel consumption. The multi-disc clutch is proportioned to absorb peak loads generated by the most power-hungry of implements, whilst the modulating clutch ensures maximum reliability even when using implements with a high torque demand. Selecting ECO mode, the PTO is driven at a lower crankshaft speed, which means lower fuel consumption and reduced noise levels, whilst at intermediate engine speeds, substantial power is delivered together with notably high efficiency and torque. Power take-off. This can be operated both from the driving seat and from a switch on the rear fenders. There is also an Auto P.T.O. function, interlocked to the up/down position of the rear lift, which can be used to programme stop and restart of the power take-off. For jobs requiring implements front and rear, there is also the option of a front P.t.o. (1000 rpm), driven directly from the engine by way of an oil-immersed multidisc clutch with modulating electrohydraulic control circuit.

Transforming power into productivity

The extraordinary versatility and reliability of IRON models is also evident in the hydraulic system. The IRON range can be equipped with an open-centre system (pump rated 83 l/min), or a closed-centre system (variable displacement pump rated 120 l/min) with load sensing. With a closed-centre system (available on Hi-Line versions only), pump flow is varied and adapted automatically to implement demands. This means that the pump supplies only the amount of oil required at any given moment, giving faster response to the selected controls and a faster lifting action (even at low engine speeds). The result: optimization of hydraulic power, lower oil temperature in the circuit, and longer life of hydraulic components. The hydraulic system of IRON models includes 3 spool valves with 6-way ports (4 valve, 8-way for Hi-Line versions), with detent, kickout, float, flow regulator and timer functions. All hydraulic ports have push-pull type couplers and an individual oil recovery device (to catch any drops that may spill when connecting the implement hoses). The hydraulic system is controlled by a set of levers (including one cross-gate type) grouped on the side console. On Hi-Line versions, all spool valves are electrohydraulic and can be controlled by the driver either from a small joystick on the multifunction armrest console, or using 4 pushbuttons on the main joystick.

The answer to all lifting problems

All models of the IRON range are equipped with an electronic power lift that will handle loads up to 6200 kg in complete safety. An electronic control unit ensures precision management of lifting operations, proportioning the generous power of the hydraulic circuit to optimum advantage and monitoring all functions of the system continuously: draft and position, quick soil engagement, mix, transport lock, lift height limiter, rate-of-drop control, anti-pitching and wheelslip (with radar). Lift movements and settings are selected from a side console and indicated by a digital display on the main instrument panel, in which the driver can view the various operating parameters. The wheelslip setting, in particular, is selected directly with a knob operated by the driver. With this highly efficient interactive electronic system, the driver can check and monitor all the operating and productivity parameters of the tractor, in real time. And to simplify control operations further, especially when repetitive, the onboard computer can be equipped with a special S.D.S. function (Hi-Line versions only): a time-saving device, incorporated into the multifunction joystick, that can be used to save up to 16 commands in sequence retrievable at a touch of the lever. Operations saved and currently selected

IRON

with the S.D.S. function can be viewed as easy-to-read icons in a dedicated display on the instrument panel. Secondary lift and PTO controls mounted on the rear fenders facilitate the operation of hitching and unhitching implements. In short, quality and safety of work are guaranteed - with no compromises. This already superior equipment package can be enhanced further with the addition of front linkage with double acting cylinders, rated capacity 3200 kg.

Unbeatable comfort
The comfort of a modern tractor comes from a number of factors combining to make the daily work environment both pleasant and gratifying. User-friendly driving functions, total visibility, low levels of noise and vibration, and a cab interior worthy of a saloon car: these are the features that SAME has traditionally built into all its tractors, and which find their highest expression in models of the IRON series. First and foremost, the size of the cab. The cab presents a compact and linear envelope on the outside (maximum height 260 cm with 34 tyres), yet on the inside there is room to spare: width at waistline 1540 mm, length 1630 mm, height 1515 mm, to give an internal volume approaching 3 m. Sound insulation is another key feature: with efficient sound-absorbent materials, and an auxiliary bulkhead located between the engine and the cab, the driving position remains free of noise and vibration, creating the ideal conditions even when working long hours at a stretch. Panoramic windows afford 320 visibility, and the glass roof hatch with sun-blind expands the external field of vision still further. All the controls, colour-coded into different function groups, are arranged practically and ergonomically around the operator, positioned according to frequency of use. On Hi-Line versions, the multifunction armrest console with integrated joystick carries the arms reach concept a stage further - and in reality, controlling most of the functions on IRON models is childs play.

IRON

Air temperature and recirculation in the cab are maintained steady by the airconditioning and ventilation system: with a generous number of adjustable vents arranged intelligently around the cab, the occupant can both adjust the temperature quickly and efficiently, and ensure the windows are kept demisted and defrosted. Hi-Line versions also feature an automatic air-conditioning system. Engine vibrations and wheel judder are absorbed by a fully integrated suspension system.

The cab is equipped with an airsuspension drivers seat, adjustable extensively for position and adaptable automatically to the weight of the occupant. The one-piece cab structure is kept at a constant height thanks to the automatic levelling action of the pneumatic suspension system. Any variations in weight internally of the cab - however slight - are detected by a special sensor and compensated by special damper struts filled with compressed air. This ensures that the travel of the suspension is maintained

constant, and the cushioning effect exploited to maximum effect. The front axle suspension utilizes damper struts consisting of 2 hydraulic cylinders coupled to 3 nitrogen tanks. These components are governed by an electronic control unit, ensuring the suspension can be made harder or softer in response to the nature of the road surface. Also, depending on the application (transport duties, for example, or tillage involving appreciable draft forces), the axle can be engaged and disengaged by the driver.
