WHEN IT ALL BEGAN...

Im not an environmentalist. Im an Earth warrior. Darryl Cherney
iCARE started its pilot project in Dehradun Hills Academy (CBSE affiliated school) in the year 2009. We started with the Green Theme Campaign which continued for over a month and half. The feedback and response from the teachers, school committee and the media were very encouraging. This imbued us with renewed belief in our cause as well as the conviction to extend the initiative to other schools of the valley. The success of our initial endeavours, as well as an enthusiastic response from societal stakeholders inspired us to form iCARE. iCARE is a non-profit, youth-based organization that works towards creating a beautiful and sustainable future by promoting community involvement and educational outreach. Conserving our natural and cultural heritage is of paramount importance, but doing so presents complex challenges. At iCARE, we understand the seriousness of the situation and are committed to bringing people, who care for the valley, together. There is an urgent need for us to be conscious of our relationship with nature and to change our perception such that the interactions between us and our environment become mutually rewarding.

icare & EXPRESSIONS

Go on doing with your pen what in other times was done with the sword. - Thomas Jefferson
We at icare believe that environmental conservation and awareness about it is the need of the hour. So, initiated by youngsters, EXPRESSIONS was created. It is an online environment magazine from icare. Its first issue was released in June 2010. This magazine is our portal of hope. Through this magazine, we seek to reach changeoriented individuals who will understand the problems facing our environment today, and subsequently step up to the task of damage control. We publish the expert opinions of naturalists, conservationists and nature/wildlife enthusiasts. Moreover, we also publish the opinions of students concerned at the plight of our environment. Essentially, we seek to connect with anyone who CARES about making the world a better, safer and more beautiful place to live in. The magazine is circulated to various schools, colleges and government organizations in and around Dehradun. Since the launch of our magazine, we have successfully completed 1 year and all the issues were enthusiastically received by our readers. Our readership today stands at over thousands of readers from across the globe including some from countries such as the UK and the US.

Since the inception of our magazine, EXPRESSIONS, in June 2010, we have come a long way. We say our magazine because this effort is fuelled as much by the efforts of those who work on it, as by those, who subscribe, read and wholeheartedly support it.

Green Campaign December 2009
Our GREEN initiatives received a truly heartwarming response from the youth of Doon

Not only did we increase awareness about our organisation and the cause it espouses, we gave many enthusiastic students an opportunity to discover their hidden talents, have fun and achieve something substantial doing tie-ups with committed organizations. Hence, we managed to create valuable opportunities for the youth to to contribute in their own special way to Doon. GREEN CAMPAIGN: It all started when, one morning, curious about the kind of response hed get, Yudhishter decided to do a small campaign which involved school students and teachers. On 5th Dec 2009, which is also International Volunteer Day, icare asked the school community to step up to the occasion and express, in any form, their support for the global cause. At the end of the day, the students, in large numbers numbers produced many valuable slogans, posters and articles. GREEN EXHIBITION: Our next initiative was to organize an exhibition to showcase the creative talents of students. We invited a number of guests to the exhibition who witnessed a number of unique creations. The students were thrilled by the appreciation.

MESSAGE FROM THE YOUTH AMBASSADOR

It all began on a Sunday morning, when I was strolling in my college, watching the beautiful landscape and wondering if I could make my institute even greener than it was and provide the students a greener environment to be in. Thats when my phone rang. To my surprise, the person on phone said would you like to be our youth ambassador? I wondered to myself if this was a prank and asked what kind of ambassador do u want me to be sir? The answer: Youth Ambassador for icare! I was on top of the world. Though I had always heard of icare and had even wanted to congratulate them for their successful endeavours, I had not been able to find time to reach them. Now it seems that its true that if you want to but cant reach out to the universe, the universe reaches out to you. Many NGOs come and go. But icare is different since it gives a platform to the youth of this beautiful valley a chance to be associated with it and to execute the initiatives, which are unique in themselves. icares success only shows what the power of youth can do if we all come together. While I was eloquent about icare, I would like to tell you something about myself as well. I was born and brought up in Dehradun and have studied fashion communication my Symbiosis Institute of Design, Pune. Currently I have taken over the mantle of heading Tulas Institute (The Engineering and Management College) from my dad Mr. Sunil Kumar Jain. Though I go by the title of Executive Director at the age of 22, let me assure you its not as easy as it looks like. However, I love what I am doing, and this is the message I would like to pass on to the youth: do what you like, do something you want to do, and once you believe in something, it will happen if only you try hard enough. Also, one should also pursue his/her hobbies or be a part of some cause. We at Tulas, have been contributing to society in our small way by creating green buildings, where we give special attention to the construction, ensuring that it in no way poses a hazard to the environment. I would like to thank Yudhishter, and his team at icare and the people of Dehradun for bestowing this crown of brand ambassador upon me. I am truly overwhelmed and absolutely charged up to be a part of icares initiatives. Personally, I would like to initiate a programme where we can take measures to eliminate plastic bags as theyre extremely harmful to the environment. Also, a save water campaign since the forthcoming generations may have to face water shortages due to our excesses. I would like to popularise the creation of rain-water harvesting systems where every household would save water and would uses it meticulously. Heres looking forward to a cleaner, greener Earth!

Youth Ambassador icare, Dehradun
