Chester Girl Makes Second Hair Donation in Three Years

Julia had over 8 inches of hair and four ponytails cut and donated to the organization, Beautiful Lengths. Beautiful Lengths accepts hair donations from women and men in order to make real hair wigs for cancer patients whove lost

their hair due to treatment. Julia made the donation in memory of her young cousin Amanda Post, who passed in 2009 after a courageous battle with Acute Myeloma Leukemia. This is the second time in 3 years Julia has donated her hair to Beautiful Lengths and hopes to continue giving back.

Schmit Receives Girl Scout Gold Award

achel Schmitt of Long Valley recently received the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest achievement in Girl Scouts. For her Gold Award project, she ran four "Happy Birthday, Jesus!" workshops for 60 children in grades K3 of the Our Lady of the Mountain Religious Education program last December. Each workshop was a Christmas-themed 2 hour session of activities. The children played games such as Christmas Bingo and PutBaby-Jesus-in-the-Manger, made prayer chains and family Christmas cards and enjoyed story time. The project involved 95 hours of planning all the age-specific activities, advertising the workshop, registering the students, setting up the Parish Center for

each session and coordinating the 20 volunteers that would help run the various activities. The purpose of the workshop was to provide children with a fun way of learning and understanding the real meaning of Christmas that getting gifts is not the reason for the season. Another aspect of the project which embraced this concept was the collection of toys for the Washington Twp. Police Departments Toys for Tots campaign as admission to the workshop. The generosity of the students provided over 70 toys for needy children. Rachel started in Girl Scouting as a Brownie in second grade and has been a member of Troop 1804 for the past seven years. She has earned the Bronze and

Silver Awards and the Family of God and I Live My Faith Catholic medals. Rachel is currently a junior and High Honor Roll student at West Morris Central High School where she enjoys playing clarinet for the Marching & Concert Bands. She has also been a cast member of the school's spring musicals and is a member of the French Honor Society, varsity swim team, Future Educators Club, REACH mentoring program and Highlanders for Humanity. Outside of school she is an active member of Our Lady of the Mountain Church, volunteering as an altar server and a 3rd grade teachers aide in the Religious Education program. During the last two summers, she was part of the OLM Spirit Builders

group that traveled to Charleston, WV to help improve homes in a local community. She plans to attend college after high school where she hopes to major in Chemical Engineering with a minor in Music, French or Education.

At Shampooches Pet Spa the groomer makes house calls providing all grooming needs from toes to ears. Incorporated this past April, the mobile grooming company services all breeds of dogs up to 90 pounds in Hackettstown, Long Valley and Budd Lake. Yes, a dogs schedule is just as precious as a persons. At Shampooches Pet Spa, customers receive top individual attention. The advantage is we come to you, says Jan Quodomine, owner. With most grooming places, when you go to the shop, you have to bring it [the dog] in the morning and then you cant pick it up until the afternoon. Quodomine also owns Hooves, Paws, Tails & Claws (HPTC) a professional dog walking and pet sitting service- out of Independence Township. With that company, established in April 2005, she has been making house calls to surrounding areas to walk dogs and care for pets daily. She decided to expand her business to include mobile grooming after one of her

pet-sitting employees Melanie Rieur of Oxford- shared her interest of becoming a dog groomer. Rieur started to work as an apprentice as a dog groomer in October 2010 with one of Quodomines pet-sitting clients, Jodi Murphy, a master pet stylist for the past 10 years. For six months, under Murphys guidance, Rieur learned the skills and techniques needed to groom all breeds of dogs. It was one of those situations where everything fell into my lap, explains Quodomine, who then went out to purchase a new van for her new grooming business. Melanie is capable of grooming all breeds to their standard. Although there are other businesses out there like hers, Quodomines customers can expect top quality work. Murphy, who trained Rieur in shampooing and clipping techniques, has groomed dogs that compete at the national level in dog competitions. She has competed at the international level and has won awards, says Quodomine. At Shampooches Pet Spa, all kinds of dogs, except for large breeds more than 90 pounds, can take advantage of mobile grooming services. Each grooming session continued on page 8

Chester Farmers Market

he Chester Farmers Market opened for its third season on June 26, 2011 on Perry Street (off Main Street) in downtown Chester. This years market almost didnt happen. Historic Chester Business Association (HCBA) had sponsored the event the last two years, but decided to drop it in April 2011. The Rotary Club of Chester-Long Valley stepped up to sponsor the event this year. Bill McGuire, Chairman of the Rotary Club, was moved to action when various local organizations wanted to keep the farmers market. McGuire and his team of volunteers took the reins to plan for the event in

May. Miraculously, the Rotary team put together the event in a mere five weeks in time for opening day. This years farmers market featured over 17 vendors selling a variety of goods, including farm fresh produce, baked goods, farm-raised meats, honey, pickles and other delicacies. Despite the overcast weather, the opening day was a success. Between 800 to 900 people visited the market on the opening day versus about 250 people last year, according to Bill McGuire. Vendors were thrilled about the business. By one oclock

in the afternoon, Larry Brinkman of Hoboken Farms in Summit, N.J. was staring at near empty baskets of freshbaked breads and other baked goods. Customers flocked to his booth to sample and buy a variety of artisan breads before the market closed at 3 p.m. The sponsor of the event, Rotary Club of Chester-Valley, is a non-profit organization that supports student scholarships and other charitable programs in the area. Internationally the organization works to eradicate polio from developing countries, such as Pakistan, Afghanistan, India and Nigeria. Garden Club Member Competes in Prestigious World Flower Show

onika Karoly, owner of Fleurs Divine in Long Valley and member of the Garden Club of Long Valley, recently competed in the World Association of Flower Arrangers (WAFA) World Flower Show, This Glorious Earth, in Boston, Mass. from June 15 to 19, 2011. Karoly entered designs in the "Fire" and "Chameleon" classes. Chameleon being a dual arrangement that is designed as one. Both were designed as traditional mass arrangements. The show featured over 600 competitors from all over the world. When asked about her experience, Karoly said, It was a pleasure for me to have met all these designers from different countries and all in the same room. The creativity was overwhelming and amazing. According to the WAFAs Web site ( w w w. w a f a u s a . o r g ) , WAFA enhances the diversity of the floral art form by

transcending international cultural barriers and bringing together fresh ideas. The management of WAFA moves from country to country every three years." The next WAFA competition will take place in Ireland in three years, but it will not to be in the Unite

By Josh Lashley hroughout the course of a baseball season, there can most assuredly be a certain amount of obstacles and for any program at any level of competition to overcome. This is of course true for those student-athletes and coaches who are part of the high school baseball world. But, if a team is willing to learn from their mistakes and make improvements in areas in which they are already strong-then they can take away solid, meaningful memories along with a sense of fulfillment from a given season. Locally, a squad who was faced with some talented opponents, yet demonstrated the willingness, skill and determination to meet the challenges in front of them was West Morris Central. The Wolfpack finished the season just a nod under the .500 mark at 13-15 overall. They earned a spot in the NJSIAA North II Group III Sectional Tournament where they advanced to the quarterfinal round before losing to top seeded Millburn. WMC captured a 10-0 victory over Nutley in the opening round of the bracket. Millburn won the North II Group III Sectional crown and Seneca won the Group III State title.

When considering his teams biggest wins this past spring, one contest in particular stands out in the mind of West Morris head coach Dan Wydner. The Randolph game early in the year was one that we won the game, 13-10, on a walk-off grand slam by Connor Smolensky, Wydner said. Randolph was the returning (Group IV) State champs and they were unbeaten at the time. Shane Thompson was amongst the student-athletes on the roster who stepped to the forefront as a leader for the Wolfpack this year. Shane is a two-year captain of baseball team and a three-year starter, Wydner said. Hes a great player and even a finer young man. A player who showed steady improvements throughout the season which paid off in a big way was sophomore Tyler Amandos. Tyler started year on the junior varsity and ended the year as our highest average hitter and RBI leader, Wydner said. With six of the eight position players, along with three pitchers and every reliever returning for 2012, Wydner is very optimistic about the future of the program.

The GREEN Summerfest at Vasa Park Aug. 13-14 Features Free admission, Great Bands

Admission is free; parking is $5 per car. GREEN Summerfest, a 2-day open air music festival, features many of New Jerseys best bands and performers and will be held in Budd Lake at the beautiful tree-lined Vasa Park, conveniently located just off of Route 46 and minutes away from Route 80 (Exit 26). This mainstream event brings an infusion of green ideas by showcasing eco-friendly companies, green products, services, ideas and networks. Jons Journey is a not for profit 501(c)3 organization designed to raise money that is distributed by the organization through caregivers at Goryeb Childrens Hospital to families who have a child suffering from a condition that requires brain surgery. Although there is no cure, exercise and diet are part of treatment and prevention of osteoporosis and its unwanted effects. Project Healthy Living is an active health promotion initiative for seniors in Morris County. Among the programs offered is Project Healthy Bones, which has been offered to the community for over ten years by NORWESCAP's Skylands RSVP. This exercise and education program is especially beneficial to persons who are at risk or have been diagnosed with osteoporosis. As the Healthy Bones program has grown in popularity, the need for class peer leaders volunteers, has become acute and a call is being sent out for new volunteer peer leaders. Project Healthy Bones is a fun twentyfour week program, held once a week for 60-90 minutes that teaches about proper eat-

ing habits for a healthier you. Exercises for the participants strive toward helping to improve or stabilize bone density, increase strength, balance, and flexibility and build muscle mass all utilizing ankle weights, together with a training manual. Individuals in the community are invited to volunteer as a class leader and need to attend training classes. The next training class is being offered on Tuesday, July 26, and Wednesday, July 27, 2011 at United Jewish Communities of MetroWest , 901 Rt. 10 Whippany. Imagine if someone were to take all the correspondence and mail off your desk and place them into a storage container based on the time period they were collected. What kind of filing system would this be? Advertising circulars and utility bills would be mixed in with very personal letters. Decades later, someone would have to make sense of this collection where the only relationship is that they shared a common owner. This has made it a hard task to archive since many articles are handwritten and deciphering them into a proper reference category can be a librarians nightmare. However, to a document archeologist this can be a very interesting discovery. They get to know the man Thomas Edison in a virtual open and personal way. After all, you may be the first set of eyes in over a hundred years to view both these great and trivial details. Stuck in between those jotted lab notes may be the lab sundry bills that Edison was notoriously delinquent in paying. So who are these document archeologists, leading this trek to an indoor expedition that cuts pathways to the illustrious mind of the Wizard of Menlo Park? They are a team of editors/scholars at Rutgers, State University of New Jersey that forms the Thomas A. Edison Papers Project team. It is one of the most ambitious editing projects ever undertaken by an American university. It has spanned decades and includes 5 million pages of documents. This project has scanned these documents into an electronic repository to be viewed by the virtual world. Now the chief goal of the Edison Papers team is producing a fifteen-volume book edition of transcribed and interpreted documents. It will provide an overview of Edison's life and career but also significant resources for understanding the development of all his pioneering technology. It will also cover relative emerging technology too. It is through the great organization of the Edison Papers Project, writers are able to provide inspiring books, and also offer up tantalizing trivia.
