STATION 1

TIME ALLOCATED : 10 minutes

THE MAGIC OF RED CABBAGE

Red cabbage contains a pigment molecule called flavin (an anthocyanin). Very acidic solutions will turn anthocyanin to a red colour. Neutral solutions result in a purplish color. Alkaline solutions appear in greenish-yellow. MATERIALS/ APPARATUS Evaporating dish, wire gauze, Bunsen burner, lighter, test tube, test tube rack, dropper, knife, tripod stand, white tile, spatula, red cabbage, distilled water, substance P, Q, R, S and T. INSTRUCTIONS 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Chop the red cabbage. Put into the evaporating dish. Pour some water until the red cabbage immerse. Heat up the mixture until the colour leach out of the cabbage. Use the liquid produced to test the pH of substance P, Q, R, S and T.

STATION 1
GROUP NO: . QUESTIONS: 1. Observation: Substance P Q R S T Colour after reaction with red cabbage liquid

[5 marks] 2. Below is a table of approximate colors of red cabbage indicator solution at different pH. Arrange substance P, Q, R, S and T according to their pH in ascending order. pH 2 4 6 8 10 Color Red Purple Violet Blue Blue-Green 12 Greenish Yellow

[2 marks] 3. We use shampoo to clean our hair, but why do we use hair conditioner after using the shampoo? [1 marks] 4. Write 2 properties of acidic and alkaline substances. Acidic substances Alkaline substances [4 marks] 5. Give 2 examples of alkaline substances that can be found in your bathroom. [2 marks]

STATION 2
TIME ALLOCATED : 10 minutes WATER FILTRATION SYSTEM

Water is the most fundamental building block of life. Most of us are fortunate to be living in a place where water is literally at our fingertips. But for the people living in the rural areas, having clean water for their families are quite difficult. Help them to build their own water filtration system. MATERIALS/ APPARATUS Plastic bottle, fine sand, cotton wool, coarse sand, fine stone, pebbles, dirty pond water, beaker, retort stand INSTRUCTIONS 1. Build your own water filter by arranging the given materials inside the up-side down plastic bottle so that the pond water comes out clean. 2. Make sure that all the materials are clean. Wash them if necessary.

STATION 2
GROUP NO: . QUESTIONS: 1. Draw and label your water filtration system in the space provided.

[10 marks] 2. What is the colour of the filtered water? [1 mark] 3. The filtered water does not remove microorganisms. Give one way that can be used to remove them. [1 mark] 4. List 4 natural sources of water. (i) .. (iii) . . (ii) . (iv)

STATION 3
TIME ALLOCATED : 10 minutes TEMPORARARY MAGNET

When electric current flows through a conductor, the conductor acts like a magnet because a magnetic field is formed around the conductor. As the electric current stops flowing, the magnetic field disappears. MATERIALS/ APPARATUS 3.0 V battery, insulated wire, iron nail, pins, graph paper, battery holder. INSTRUCTIONS 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Neatly wrap the wire to make 8 loops around the nail. Connect both ends of the wire to the battery. Move the nail near the pins. Count the number of pins attracted to the nail. Repeat procedure 1-4 for 12, 16, 20 and 24 loops.

STATION 3
GROUP NO: . QUESTIONS: 1. What is the aim of this activity? [1 mark] 2. Name the variables involved in this activity. (a) Manipulated variable (b) Responding variable (c) Constant variable : . : . : . [3 marks] 3. Tabulate your data in the table below. Number of turns Number of pin attracted

[5 marks] 4. By using the graph paper, draw the graph of Number of pins attracted against Number of turns. [7 marks] 5. Based on the graph, what is the relationship between Number of pins and Number of turns? [1 mark]

STATION 4
TIME ALLOCATED : 15 minutes

CELL AS A BASIC UNIT OF LIVING THINGS

In 1665, Robert Hooke, an English Scientist discovered that the cork consists of small units and shaped like bricks. These small units are called cells, which in Latin mean small room. MATERIALS/ APPARATUS Light microscope, microscope slide, cover slip, dropper, distilled water, mounting pin, filter paper, knife, leaf, white tile. INSTRUCTIONS 1. Get a fresh leaf from your surrounding. 2. Clean the leaf and carefully scrape the surface of the leaf until it is almost transparent. 3. Make a wet mount on a glass slide using the small transparent part of the leaf. 4. Cover the specimen with the cover slip. 5. Show your slide to the examiner. 6. Use the microscope to observe and magnify the leaf cell.

STATION 4
GROUP NO: . QUESTIONS: 1. Draw and label 5 components of a light microscope.

[5 marks] 2. Draw and label your observation of a leaf cell.

[6 marks]

3. Slide preparation (for examiners use)

TIME ALLOCATED : 15 minutes DO YOU HAVE POWER?

Can a man weighing 70 kg climbs a tree of 7.5 m high in 2 minutes?? MATERIALS/ APPARATUS Weighing scale, 50 m metre rule, stop watch INSTRUCTIONS 1. Weigh yourself and your partner using a weighing scale. 2. Start the stop watch and walk up the stairs until the 3rd floor. Record the time taken by you and your partner. 3. Measure the height of the stairs vertically.

STATION 5
GROUP NO: . QUESTIONS: 1. Calculate the power generates by both of you. Name of student Weight of student (N) Height of stairs (m) Time (s) Power (W)
