Publican-sponsors day a hit at bowls club

The publican-sponsors day at the Blackall bowls club on Sunday was a big success. Over 40 people took part in the fun bowls day and although it was a warm day everyone had a great time. The overall winners were Jacko, Brett and Dave Carter with plus 20. Runners up were Loretta, Cookie, Marta and Dally Holden with plus 11. The hotel trophy and Tina Holdens memorial was won by the Barcoo hotel with 51 points, from the Union hotel with 45 points. The club would like to thank all those who helped on the day, especially Roby Doyle and John Bowyer for once again supplying a very nice barbeque lunch. This weekend, the club will be holding their annual general meeting followed by social bowls.

Facelift for the Prince of Wales

The Prince of Wales Hotel on Shamrock Street in Blackall is undergoing big changes with substantial renovations, a new lessee and a new manager. The freehold is also currently under contract. Longreach publican Roly Gooding officially took over the hotel lease at the beginning of October from previous lessee and owner of the Barcoo Hotel Geoff Pohlner, and is set to take over ownership of the Prince from the McGrath Family in the near future. Landmark real estate agent Robert Picking says that the sale will be a positive move for Blackall. This will create some healthy competition in town which is a great thing. The hotel is not Mr Goodings first business venture in Blackall. He ran the Tattersalls Hotel from 1980 to 1983. Mr Gooding says that he currently works 24 hours a day at his Commercial Hotel in Longreach and also owns another pub in Bouldercombe. I first had a look at the (Prince of Wales Hotel) in Blackall midway through last year and it was a complicated decision process but we decided to go for it, Mr Gooding said. It will be a great challenge. Blackall residents Neville and Debbie Dolinski have taken over the management of the hotel. It needs a really good tidy up and a good manager to take it on. I

Tambo hosts Melbourne Cup tour

The golden gleam of the Melbourne Cup was the centre of attention at a gala dinner in Tambo last week when the Cups 2009 tour hit town. Tambo has enjoyed a reputation as the Doomben of the West, having the second oldest registered racetrack in Queensland after the Brisbane one, and it lived up to this on the day. The $125 000 Cup, made with 1.6 kilograms of 18 carat gold, brought interested school and pensioner groups from neighbouring towns to Tambo to take their turn to handle the trophy with white gloves. Other events held to celebrate the visit included hobby horse races and other fun at the state school, a lunch hosted by the Tambo Senior Citizens, and afternoon tea in EE Parr Park hosted by the BlackallTambo Regional Council mayor.

really believe Rowan Hunnam that Nev is the man for the job, Mr Gooding said. Mr Dolinski says that they are looking forward to the challenge of changing the Prince of Wales into a friendly, quality pub for Blackall with a good atmosphere. He started his business Outback Sound in 1982, providing a range of entertainment and lighting to the central west. I built it from scratch because it is something that I have always wanted to do. Having spent 26 years working on the railway and four years with the Blackall-Tambo Regional Council, Mr Dolinski says that he was ready for a different challenge. continued on page 5

Victorian Racing Club spokesman Andrew Lemon said that many people never got a chance to go to Flemington racetrack in November to see the big race and so the tour was designed to bring the Cup to the people. The Melbourne Cup doesnt belong to Melbourne but to all Australia, he said. The trophy isnt a perpetual one a new one is made each year for the winner. Replicas are made for the owner, the breeder, the jockey, even the strapper nowadays. Melbourne Cup-winning jockey, John Marshall gave the 100-strong dinner audience a taste of what it had been like to ride a winner in the race that stops a nation. He said that in 1999, he had been booked to ride Rue Lopez, a horse that he had a high opinion of, but who failed to win the Geelong Cup and so continued on page 7

Well it RAINED! It is still looking promising!! Hopefully there is a bit more on the way. Fortunately we have missed the dust thus far, which has been to the west and north of us. We have clouds in the sky; the wind is in the north time to say our prayers! It was a beautiful ceremony and wonderful afternoon tea at St Josephs to mark Breast Cancer awareness week, as well as supporting local women survivors in our community. Lots and lots of pink apparel to please the eye and the delicious afternoon tea featured delightfully decorated cup cakes as well as all things yummy including really-good-for-you fruit. While I was at St Josephs, Principal Tim Franzmann took me on a tour of the grounds explaining the upgrade to the sporting oval made possible through the Federal Governments funding of the indoor sports complex, for which the school body had been raising funds. Those funds are now being spent on the muchneeded oval. The Blackall Tambo Regional Council Water and Sewerage team is working in consultation with the Principal to supply the necessary fittings, connections and meters to ensure an adequate water supply for the oval as the grass plots are laid. The meters are for monitoring purposes only. Blackall Tambo Regional Council senior staff have been engaged in preparation workshops for the process of asset management. This is a requirement of the Queensland State Government and will apply to every facet of the business of Councils statewide. The timelines drawn up by the State Government, together with the complexity and scope of the issue, certainly mean we have to make a start on this process now! I have a further meeting with the Minister for Transport and Main Roads the Hon Rachael Nolan MP on Sunday, November 1, in regard to the imposition of the loss of the Wednesday flight into Blackall. I am looking forward to the Q150 Shed which will be in Blackall on November 6 and 7. THIS IS A FREE SHOW. There are a variety of fabulous acts from Raw Metal Dance Company, En Garde! Blue Grass, Country and Flamenco guitar extravaganza, Shenzo Gregorio, Golden Fiddle winner for 2007 and his electric Stunt Orchestra, together with our own Damien and Dylan Dolinski, Alison Mobbs and the Blackall Community Choir. The Where Were From banners will be on display at the Q150 Shed for all to see. There are workshops available with the Raw Dance Company. Visit www.q150.qld.gov.au to register for the workshops. I am sure we have some budding dancers in our communities of Blackall and Tambo. Commencing at 3.30pm this is an opportunity NOT TO BE MISSED. see you there!! The ABBA concert at the Blackall Cultural Centre on Tuesday night was a great night; such fun with everyone participating in the singing and dancing! Congratulations to the Blackall Tambo Regional Council, Blackall office staff, for their organization of this event. I know everyone had a terrific time!!!

Major renovations have been taking place behind the closed doors of the hotel since early October. The best thing that we can do while the doors are closed is give the place a revamp, Mr Dolinski said. We are focusing on the bar and bottleshop, with a plan to revamp the beer garden, kitchen and accommodation facilities in the future. An earlier Cup visit to Tambo

Tambo has been lucky enough see the Melbourne Cup twice over the years. People who worked on Lansdowne in the 1970s recall seeing either the Cup itself or one of the replicas made for the winning connections. The manager of Lansdowne at the time, Murray Leeds was the son of winning owner Gordon Leeds of Trangie, New South Wales. Gordon won the Cup with his horse Russia in 1946 in a sterling effort, being the top weight, winning by five lengths and equalling the race record. He was ridden by Darby Munro, the doyen of Australian jockeys at the time, and legend has it that Munro had partied long into the night before and was hung over.

It seems likely that Mr Leeds trophy made its way up to his son Murray at Tambo where it was shown around. Tambos other connection with the Cup took place two years earlier, in 1944, when Richard Turnbull, who owned Lansdowne at the time, won the Melbourne Cup with Sirius. This gave Turnbull the distinction of being the first incumbent Victorian Racing Club president to hold the trophy, although being wartime, no trophy was presented. Mr Turnbull received war bonds instead, which he donated to charity. Members of the Turnbull family still live in the Tambo district today.
