The Courses for Community program at Salem College strives to provide a warm and supportive environment for a high quality learning experience. We offer 40 courses in a variety of series, including wine, art, writing, preparation and professional, fitness and health, and the popular personal enrichment series. Our course fees are competitive, yet affordable, and courses are individually priced with discounts available in specific areas, as noted. Writing For Profit and Getting Published (Mathosian)
This course will teach you to think like an editor and identify magazines, newspapers and trade publications for your freelance writing. You will learn how to successfully query editors, price your work and make multiple sales from articles and stories. How to Blog: Options I & II (SanDominick)

Do you have a talent, challenge, lifestyle, interest, or ANYTHING that youd like to share with others? What are you passionate about? You can write your very own blog about whatever matters to you! In this class, participants will design, develop and produce their own blog, discuss blogging pros and cons, experiment with layouts, upload images and videos and learn how some bloggers passion turned into gain. Healing Words: Writing to Heal and Grow (Stevenson)

Heal your life with expressive writing, no experience required! Research shows that writing about lifes stresses helps heal both physical and emotional ailments. Your life story will be explored with gentle writing exercises in several genres: guided prompts, memoirs, poetry and the art of journaling. Well also share our work in a small group setting and have plenty of time for questions. This is also a great class for writers wanting to re-charge their writing practice with new insights and clarity. Notebook and class materials provided. Limited enrollment. Writing Childrens Picture Books (Bryant)

The childrens picture book market is more competitive than ever before. In this course, youll learn more about what publishers, agents and buyers are looking for, with special focus on character and plot development; writing on particular themes; and the most common pitfalls for new and/or unpublished writers. Through a detailed examination and analysis of published picture books, well identify unique elements that lead to success. Beating Writers Block (Bryant)

Anyone who has attempted to put words on paper has stared down writers block. In this course, well explore what writers block is and where it comes from. Well discuss different strategies for breaking through whatever is blocking your writing. Students will learn techniques to help overcome writers block and open the channels of creativity so that the next time writers block strikes, theyll be ready to fight back! Fall Fiction for All (Younts)

Do you have an interesting idea for a gripping story? This class will help you take a step-bystep approach to planning, organizing and putting together the basics of a fiction story. This workshop-type class will be constructivist in nature and will teach you to fine-tune your ideas and put your story on paper. Shagging for Fall Fun (Holcomb)

Shag lessons for the beginner/intermediate with basic steps for the beginner and a refresh of steps for those with experience. Introduction to Wine (Heye)

Trotting Tuesdays at Cash Lovell Stables (Lovell)

Learn to exercise the body and mind, increase multicultural awareness and pique culinary curiosity. In this course, we will explore three different cultures through traditional dances, cultural discussions and sampling traditional cuisine. At each of the first three classes, participants will learn steps and simple choreography for traditional belly dance, dance of the Persian Empire and Afro-Brazilian dance. During the fourth and fifth classes, we will practice all three dances. The last class will also include an optional hors doeuvre buffet brought by the participants. Join our wine expert to get acquainted with wine terminology, labels and the lore of historical and regional differences in wine. Learn to evaluate wines as you taste the major grape varieties from around the world. The final class takes place at a local vineyard. Each participant will receive a Riedel wine glass. Salem College Wine Dinner at Christophers (Heye)

Join us as we put into practice what our wine classes have offered for the past eleven years. Our Wine Guy has worked with Christophers to select wines to match a full dinner offering. Wines of the New World (Heye)

Explore the world of wine from Australia, New Zealand, South America, South Africa and the United States as you leisurely sample and discuss grapes with unique tastes from each region. This is a course for the beginner or returning riders of all ages who want to learn to care for and ride horses in a safe, nurturing environment. Master the skills in an indoor area while training with the best equestrian professionals in the region. Dress comfortably in long pants and sturdy shoes. Spain has expanded the quantity and quality of its wines over the past two decades and now produces some of the finest wines in Europe. This in-depth review of Spanish wine regions will be balanced with a look at the more traditional aspects of Spanish culture. In the second class we will explore the art and history of bullfighting while watching videos of several of the current top matadors. Each participant will receive a Riedel wine glass. Holiday Painting: Option I Angels in Watercolor (Verano)

Angels are spiritual beings who represent love, kindness and support. Come join our watercolor painting class and create your own unique angel paintings. Students will enjoy working step-by-step on three painting projects: angel musicians, flying angels and the resting peace angel. Bring to class: (9 x 12) drawing pad, (9 x 12) arches, (12 sheet) watercolor tablet (no substitutions), watercolor paints and brushes. Teens/Adults. Birds of a Feather: Drawing and Painting Birds (Verano)

Birds wear every color imaginable with special details on their heads, bodies, tails, feet, wings and feathers. By practicing these special features through drawing and observing their lifestyle functions, you will paint birds of any species with confidence. Along with a drawing pad and pencil, bring to class: acrylic paints, several (9 x12) canvas panels or arches, watercolor paper with watercolor paints and brushes. Teens/Adults. Relax and Paint Workshop: Options I and II (Verano)

If you are an avid painter, or you havent painted in years, you will enjoy this stress-free creative painting workshop. Choose your own subject and utilize reference materials or a still-life setup to create wonderful works of art in the medium of your choice. This class is a great way to relax, paint and receive handson instruction with a group of like-minded artists. Acrylic, watercolors or water-soluble oils welcome. Class size is limited. Painting Flowers: a la Georgia OKeeffe (Verano)

Georgia OKeeffe was one of the most compelling American artists of the 20th century. Her large florals fill each canvas with energy and precision. Artists will practice close-up flower designs popular to her genre and complete a large, vibrant painting OKeeffe style. Bring to class: one (16 x 20 or larger) canvas, enlarged (close-up) pictures of your favorite flowers, paints of your choice, drawing pad and a one-inch brush. Holiday Painting: Option II - Old World Santa in Acrylics (Verano)

Create an Old World Santa painting for gift giving or to cherish forever. Daily demos and individual attention will guide each artist to create a realistic Santa that will be a lasting decorative piece to be enjoyed each Christmas season. Play of the Hand in the 21st Century: Level II of the ACBL Approved Bridge Series (Goins) Introduction to French Conversation (Wallace)
This course is designed to assist bridge students in improving their play of the hand techniques such as card combinations, establishing a suit, finesses and when to delay drawing trumps. The course text, ACBL Series TextPlay of the Hand in the 21st Century, is a review of basic bidding techniques such as hand evaluations and opening bids and responses. Mondays, September 12 November 14 10:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. $80 This introduction to the beautiful French language will unlock the mysteries of pronunciation, introduce basic sentence construction and help you begin building a useful vocabulary. The text and accompanying CD collection provide guidance and practice outside of class. During classes, a variety of activities to build language skills are used in a fun classroom setting. Participants taking Continuing French following this introduction course will receive a discount of $10 on the Continuing French course fee. Join us to explore the fascinating history of tea as it spread from China throughout the world to become the second most-popular beverage consumed today, next to water. Well sample loose-leaf gourmet teas from major tea producing countries as we learn the basics of varieties, processing, brewing techniques and health benefits. The second session will focus on tea and chocolate pairings as a way to double the antioxidants and learn which chocolates pair best with various teas. Well also look at the health benefits of moderate chocolate consumption and sample chocolateinfused teas. Tuesdays, September 13 and 20 6:30 8:30 p.m. $35

Learn basic Spanish in a relaxed environment with other adults who share your interest in learning a language. You will practice basic conversational skills with members of the class and acquire basic knowledge of the structure of the language. A thematic Spanish text will be selected for the course. This class offers a detailed analysis of conventions that have become common to basic bidding concepts for the 21st-century. These include Jacoby 2 NT, preemptive bids and how to handle interference, advanced slam exploration and a review of 21st-century bidding technique. Continuing French Conversation (Wallace)

Building on our French fundamentals, we will practice in different situations that add to vocabulary and language skills. Aspects of French culture and history will be incorporated with information about travel in France. Practical aspects of language will be the focus in this lively and fun course. How to Create Your Home Remodeling Project with SketchUp (Granados)

Man Up! A Study of Masculinity in America (Younts)

The definition of masculinity has blurred in recent years, making it worth reexamining. What exactly defines being a man? What makes one individual more or less of a man than another individual? This class will look at what it means to be a male in America, examining the progression from the beginning of mans existence to men of today. Learn the fundamentals of SketchUp to visualize a remodeling project in your home. This course will introduce the aspects of drawing basic spaces to create a remodeling project design before it is built. A kitchen and a family room will be developed during the course. Gifted Children: Their Social and Emotional Development (Batenburg)

For teachers and parents interested in a better understanding of their gifted children, this course will combine lecture and discussion to investigate five main issues in gifted education: perfectionism, underachievement, special issues for girls/boys, twice exceptionality and ideas about intelligence. This workshop will give you a basic grounding in public speaking. You will learn how to use stage fright to your advantage and how to communicate with an audience. In each session, you will have the opportunity to speak for a few minutes about something you love, and will be able to observe, from the perspectives of a speaker and an audience member, the public speaking techniques that are most effective. Fall 2011 - Courses for Community Instructor Information

Ann Batenburg taught fifth grade and special education for 14 years in Illinois, working with a variety of students. She is nearing completion of a doctorate in elementary education with an emphasis in gifted education. In addition, she is an assistant professor at Salem College, teaching in the education department. Adriana Granados is a CAD instructor and offers technical support with more than 10 years of experience in design software. She is the author of Google SketchUp for Interior Design & Space Planning.

Mike Britt holds degrees in mathematics and counseling and is the executive director of The Centers for Exceptional Children. He has been an instructor for Courses for Community since 1978. Megan E. Bryant has written more than 180 childrens books (including a New York Times bestseller) for several major publishing houses, including Penguin, Simon & Schuster, Running Press, Scholastic, HarperCollins, Disney and Chronicle Books. As a former childrens book editor, she has edited more than 325 childrens books in all genres. Tony Econ has worked as a professional dance instructor for more than 25 years, teaching at the Arthur Murray and Fred Astaire Studios, among others. He is a former competitor and has coached professional and amateur dancers. Sue Freitag received a BS in mathematics from Appalachian State University and continued her graduate studies at UNC-Greensboro. For more than 22 years, she has taught mathematics in the Winston Salem/Forsyth County Schools. For the past two summers, she was a participant in MELT (Math Education Leadership Training) at Appalachian State University. Jane Goins is an Appalachian State University graduate with a degree in Spanish. For more than 10 years, she has been an ACBL Certified Bridge Instructor. She is also listed as a Gold Life Master with more than 3000 Master Points and 19 regional titles

Deane Henson currently teaches in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools. She holds degrees in Spanish, English and Latin from Radford College and Salem College. She has been an instructor in the Courses for Community program for three years. Bruce Heye has extensively toured the major winegrowing regions of the world; judged various East Coast wine competitions and is a frequent contributor of wine-related articles in local and regional publications. After earning an MBA from Seton Hall University, he had a career in the financial world, but always maintained an interest in wine. Brenda Holcomb has more than six years experience teaching shag lessons. She teaches in the Winston-Salem and Lexington communities. She also offers private lessons. Martha Isenberg is a local tea consultant for Tealightful Treasures. She holds degrees from UNC-Greensboro in home economics and nutrition education. For 28 years, she served as a nutrition educator with the NC Cooperative Extension Service. Iara Kendrick holds a Masters Degree in curriculum and instruction with 27 years experience as an academic instructor. For the last 17 years, she has offered instruction as a dance teacher. She has traveled extensively in the United States and abroad, researching, teaching and performing international dances.

Parker Lovell runs one of the largest riding academies in the United States. Cash Lovell Stables is nationally-acclaimed for its work with beginner riders of all ages, in a stateof-the-art, family-friendly environment. The barns indoor riding arenas are the largest in the Southeast. The Lovells are third-generation horsemen, with scores of world and national champion riders to their credit. Mark Mathosian is a freelance writer, columnist and photographer. His articles and photographs appear in a variety of publications from parenting and business magazines to specialty marketing publications. His specialties include How To articles and consumer protection columns. He has been instrumental in helping new writers become published. Sarah Nelson holds an education degree from the University of Tennessee. She is an English teacher and English academic team coach at West Forsyth High School. She served on committees to write the curriculum for the 9th grade practical English course, and the North Carolina End-of-Grade Test. Judy Oakley is a graduate of UNC-Greensboro and did graduate work at Cambridge University in Cambridge, England. She has been an English teacher in Winston-Salem/ Forsyth County Schools for 33 years and currently serves as the English department chairman at R.J. Reynolds High School. Carol Roan holds an M.M. in vocal pedagogy from Indiana University and an M.S. in business policy from Columbia University. She taught the first stage presence course in the nation at the New School of Music in Philadelphia, and now teaches both voice and stage presence. She is the author of Speak Up: The Public Speaking Primer.

Christine SanDominick holds a Master of Education degree in instructional technology and has more than 15 years experience in education. She has authored a blog for more than six years, chronicling the joy of raising five teenagers while maintaining a sense of humor. Jennifer L. Stevenson is an award-winning professional writer with more than 25 years experience. Her work has been published in newspapers and magazines across the country. An experienced workshop leader and past president of Winston-Salem Writers, Stevenson has been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. Michelle Thetford holds a BA in history from Salem College and is currently attending UNC-Greensboro in the Graduate History Program. She has been a Microsoft Certified Expert in Word and Excel since 2004. She conducts group and individual training on the entire suite of Microsoft Office programs. Vickie Verano has been an art instructor for the Courses for Community program since 1997 and teaches Summer Art Enrichment at Salem College. Children and adults can participate in a variety of her drawing and painting classes offered year- round through the Courses for Community program. Judi Lawson Wallace is president of Wallace Consulting & Training and earned advanced degrees from the University of Kentucky and Wake Forest University. She is certified in business French from the Chamber of Commerce French Institute in La Rochelle, France. Daniel Younts is a graduate of Winston-Salem State University with a BA in English. He is a high school English teacher and is currently working on his masters degree at Salem College.

Confirmation: A confirmation letter will be sent to you following Salems receipt of your registration and payment. Late registrants should call 336/7212855 or 336/721-2669 if they have not received confirmation before the course begins to learn where the course will be taught (if not specified in course description). Parking: Park in the Fine Arts Center parking lot, around the Old Salem Square or at the Old Salem Visitors Center. Please observe posted parking regulations. Place permit mailed with your confirmation letter on your car dashboard. Schedule Changes: Registrants are informed of course cancellations or changes. If we are unable to reach you by phone or email, a notice is posted at the place of meeting, or in the front lobby of Main Hall. Inclement Weather: Listen to local TV or radio stations for inclement weather advisories or visit www.salem.edu for details. Withdrawals & Refunds: Registrants who withdraw from a course receive a full refund, less a $25 non-refundable administration fee, if they notify the Fleer School of Adult Education/CfC in writing (email, mail or in person) at least three (3) business days prior to the beginning of class. No refunds are given after that period unless the course is cancelled by Salem College, in which case, a full refund will be issued. Refunds for trips are subject to terms of the tour.
