Quality, Concentration, and Breadth

Quality, Concentration, and Breadth

Quality, Concentration, and Breadth

Each portfolio has three required sections: Quality. Works that develop your mastery of medium (5 works) Concentration. In-depth exploration of a particular drawing concern or idea (12 works) Breadth. A variety of works that show understanding of drawing techniques and styles. (12 different works)

I. FIRST SEMESTER (FALL): BREADTH Breadth artwork shows range of experimentation and experience as it relates to artistic concerns. Works demonstrate understanding of drawing techniques and styles. Students class and sketchbook assignments in the first semester will help generate ideas for CONCENTRATION and possible entry in QUALITY section. Students must identify their concentration theme early in the year so that the work will have the direction and focus required. Students are expected to dedicate time for research, attend trips to museum/galleries, maintain a strong work ethic and prepare a hands-on work portfolio in pencil, charcoal, pastels, watercolors, acrylic, oil pastels, markersamong others. In breadth, students should have examples of: Drawing from observation (human figure, landscape, still life objects) Work in inventive or nonobjective form (expressive viewpoint, imaginary, psychological imagery, social and political personal issues). Effective use of light and shadow Line quality Surface manipulation Knowledge of composition Spatial systems (linear perspective, aerial view, space, illusion of 3-D forms) Mark making II. SECOND SEMESTER (SPRING): CONCENTRATION Concentration is about the exploration of a particular drawing or concern; a thoughtful investigation of a specific visual idea. It is a body of work seen together in one or more medium that need an underlying cohesive element throughout (series). This group of work should show a progression of skills and experimentation. To achieve unity in concentration, students create thumbnails sketches for a series of drawings and develop the series as new insights come. QUALITY: Group of work that best represent the students accomplishments; showing mastery of drawing skills, composition and visualization of concepts, mastery in composition, concept and execution. It is selected from all the work student has done inside/outside of the classroom. Can be from the concentration of breadth sections or not included in either one. They can be a group of related works, unrelated, or a combination of related/unrelated.
