1. Was he born in Delaware as Bert states in his letter or Delaware County, PA which was formed from Chester County, PA in 1789 or in Maryland as his son Abram states in the census of 1880. They do border each other. In the 1880 census John Holston (the son) stated that both of his parents were born in Virginia. Who is correct? 2. Is the Holston name derived from Holsteiner - Holstein - Holstoner Holston - Stoner which were common spellings in the late 18th century. 3. Her sources are suspect, but she says her grandmother told her this as a child. History: The Swedish Colony established in the Delaware bay area in the year 1638. It encompassed all of today's Delaware, part of Pennsylvania, and the shoreline of New Jersey. Later in the century, this piece of Pennsylvania was deeded to William Penn. The boundaries of Delaware did not reach their present configuration until 1760, due primarily to the long battle over control of much of this territory waged by the Penn family of Pennsylvania and the Calvert family of

Maryland. However, there were many people who lived in this area who did not know to what state they belonged up until the end of the century. Delaware County, PA (population 548,000) was created on September 26, 1789 from part of Chester County and named for the Delaware River, which in turn had been named for Lord de la Warr, Governor of Virginia. Media, the county seat since 1850, was incorporated as a borough on March 11, 1850, and named for its central location in the county. Chester, its original county seat, was the county seat of Chester County before 1788, and the temporary capital of Pennsylvania, 1681-1682, before Philadelphia was laid out. Edgmont Township, Delaware County PA - The first record of Edgmont Township dates from 1686 when Joseph Baker was listed as Constable for Gilead, the original name for Edgmont and a portion of Thornbury Township. The name Edgmont was adopted in 1687, and derives from the Royal Manor of Edgmond in Shropshire from which the Bakers emigrated. Early documents spell is "Edgemond", "Edgmond", "Edgemont", or "Edgmont", with the Township officially settling on "Edgmont" in the nineteenth century. Incorporated as a township in 1687. There is a Holdston listed as a taxable in 1715 in Edgmont Township. There are 3 Holstons, Benjamin, John, and Joseph listed as taxables in 1799. 4. John Holston married Nancy Bailey on 24 Nov 1811 in Albermarle, Virginia. Since he was born about 1788 he would have been about 23 when he was married. 5. In this same southeast corner of Pennsylvania, a man by the name of Leonhardt Holsteiner settled in the Tulpehocken Valley (near today's Lancaster) in the spring of 1723 with his family (see Leonhardt Holsteiner.doc). This man and his family were from the Zweibruchen region of Germany. His descendants changed the name to Holstein, Holston, Stoner over the years. The John Holdston listed in the 1715 taxables list of Edgmont Township predates the arrival of Leonhardt Holsteiner in 1723 so they are probably not related. But the John Holston listed in the 1799 taxables list could be either from John Holdston's family or from Leonhardt Holsteiner's line or neither. Tulpehocken Valley is close to Edgmont township in Delaware County, PA, but are the families connected? There is a John Holston b. 1807 in Delaware with father Elisha Holston entered in the LDS church records after 1991 by an LDS member. No other family information. Cishist@aol.com states in an email on 21 Jan 2003: It would be helpful to have the name of John and Nancy's children. They might be named for grandparent. I found a Robert Holston in Baltimore county in 1790 census, with 2 males under 16. Robert married in 1785 and appears on the 1783 tax lists.

Most of the Maryland Holstons resided in Worchester Co, however in the 1800 census none of them have a child ages l0-16. There is a William Holston in this list. Search for John Holston's parents to date has not been successful. However, today (24 Aug 2003) - Nan Harvey's file in GenCircles shows a Holston family: Father: William Holston (no dates) - probably buried in Hardin County, KY. Mother: Nancy Waller. Children Thomas Holston b. abt. 1780 in Delaware William Holston III John Holston Robert Holston Sarah Holston b. abt. 1794 in Virginia

There are a number of things that are interesting about this family record. 1.) The oldest child, Thomas, was born in Delaware about 1780. 2.) There is a John listed as the third child - this could fit with my John's birth date being around 1788 and Bert in his letter states that he was born in Delaware. However, if John Holston (the son) is correct that his father was born in Virginia, then perhaps this John Holston was born in Virginia and not Delaware. 3.) The record also shows John Holston married to Nancy Bailey (no source information given) 4.) It shows the last child Sarah being born in Virginia. This could mean that between John being born in Delaware and Sarah's birth that the family moved to Virginia. This could explain how John met his future wife, Nancy Bailey in Virginia. 5.) John and Nancy (Bailey) Holston named 3 of their children, William, John, and Sarah. 6.) Most interesting of all is the last child born to John and Nancy Holston was named "Waller". [mother's maiden name] 7.) One additional fact is that since the son, William III, is named "the third", there must be grandfather of that name. Nan also states that Thomas was married to a Susan Wheeler and they had a son by the name of Moltimore, b. abt. 1811 and was living in Grayson County, KY in 1850 according to the 1850 census: dwelling #176 Moltimore Holston, age 39 M, farmer b. Va. Sarah A, age 21 F b. Ky. Mary E, age 1/12 F b. Ky. Thomas Holston, age 70 M, none b. Del. Thomas is shown here as living with his son and family. Nan Harvey NanHarvey@aol.com does not have any other information about this family and did not keep a notes about where she obtained the information. Very frustrating! 13 Dec 2004: Came across a 1781 Tax Information List from Ridley Township in Delaware County, PA today. It listed a John Holston as an "inmate". This date is earlier than the estimated date of my John Holston's birth, but I wonder if he is somehow related. Hmmmmm. 1820 U.S. Census lists a John Holstein with his family living in Little York "Little York was the first county seat of Meade Co., Ky., formed in 1823 from Hardin Co. ( which explains why it was listed as Hardin Co. in the 1810 and 1820 census). It was located on Doe Run Creek which is about midway between Brandenburg and Ft. Knox."

"At the time Meade County was established, and county officials appointed, legal business was transacted at the little community called Little York, in the Doe Run section of the county. Squire Boone and an associate are said to have discovered the stream in 1778 and named it Doe Run, based on the large number of deer found there. Boone acquired title to the land thereabout in 1786." "About the year 1800 a large stone building was erected on Doe Run Creek and used as a mill for about a century following. Thomas Lincoln, who would be the father of President Abraham Lincoln, was at that date a young stone mason living at Elizabethtown, and is said to have worked on the Doe Run mill building, which today is likely the oldest building in the county. It was used first as a woolen mill, then as a grist mill, later it became a flour and grain mill. Today it is known as the Doe Run Inn, catering to overnight guests and serving "Southern-style food." Many valuable pieces of old furniture are on display." "While Little York was the county seat of Meade County, court sessions and other legal functions were transacted in the homes of the county officers, who lived at Little York. A few years later the county seat was moved to Brandenburg, which was incorporated in 1825. The town took its name from Captain Solomon Brandenburg, proprietor of the town. Within a short period the public officials had moved to Brandenburg and established their residence there." Source: "Two Centuries in Elizabethtown and Hardin Co. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------"Most of the early communities including Wolf Creek and Concordia survive today. But many other settlements like Booneport, Meadville, Little York, Garnettsville, Stapleton and Grahamton have faded from existence, leaving behind cemeteries filled with the graves of these pioneers who struggled to tame the wilderness." "In 1778, Squire Boone, Daniel's brother, and John McKinney discovered the stream that now bears the name Doe Run. Boone claimed title to a tract of land, including the head of Doe Run Creek, in 1786. The deed was signed by Patrick Henry, then Governor of Virginia. The community was first called Little York, Va." "Postal service in what is now Meade County began on December 21, 1819, with the establishment of an office at Little York in Hardin County, Kentucky."
