Kawasaki aircraft, including fighters Tony and Nick. There are
indications that modification and armor plating arc alao dane here.
This plant is located in the Gifu city arca and is only 800 feet
northwest of tar6ct 90.20-1833 (Mitsubishi Aircraft Plant listed in
paragraph (4) above).
(6) The Akashi Plant or the Kam,,,aki Aircraft Company
is this company's principal engine plant. It is alao credited
with the production of airframosand the final assembly of single
twin-enginc aircraft (Tony, Nick, and Lil). Hol1cver, only engines for

(1) Bombing Plans:
(a) Determination of BO!9b Load:
1. For use against the Xure tbval Arsenal. 3ir-
craft ot the 58th il'ina: were to carry lOOO-pound general-purpose banbs
and those of the 7Jrd 1Jing fl'ere to eaITy 2000-po.md genero.l-p.1rpoae
bomha. Both types of bomha were to be fUzed O.l-second delrJY nose
and .025-second delay t3il. The 2000-pound gener3lpurpose bomb .....:lS
considered to be the best type of fl'eapon far employment against hrovy
industries of' this type and liIOuld have been soloeted for use by tbe
58th lUna: also but tor the f"3ct that bomb racks rtI11uired far this eize

bClllb were not available to this Wing. The lOOO-poum. bomb 3choduled
for uae by the 58th I71ng 'if3.S considered tho best nlternlte 1'1oopon for
use ae,aiIUlt this type of target. The O.l-second delay nose fuze wa3
8S it would allow detonation of bomb3 at the optimum depth
within the target. This depth is below the floor level of the terJet
bUildiDss am a f'Unctionina; delay of O.l-seeoOO attor fuze initiation
at the building roof is required to allow penetration to trot depth.
The .025-second deIa;)' tail fuze was selected 'HI a second!lI'Y fuze. It
was beHeved that it would not be activated by the roofs of the tBrget
buildinga but that it vould be initiated by bomb il!lpact with the gt"ound
outside of the bUildings end >l'OUld, therefore, give better cratering
effect to near miss banbs than a delay of 0.1 second.
FOr use against the Pllnt of the
Y.1tsUbishi Aircrntt Company, aircraft the 3l4th Wing vere to be
loaded with 5OO-pound seneral-purpose bOlils tuzed .025-secord delay nOS8
and non-delay tail. 'l'wenty-five pel" cent of this target area is built
up and contains buildings of long and short span, and at
construction. The 500-pound general-purpose banb is more effective
against short span buildings aal lar.::;er size bOllbs are ordinarily
more effective against long SV-Ul buildings. Hovevo.r, since dispersal
of installations wi thin this target area indicated that ll. Slbstantial
percent!\;e or banbs fall.inB therein would be near misses, it was
decided that the use of sao-pound bombs woold allOli a gt"eater number
of direct hi ts which in turn would inflict a higher percentage of
dtlll8ge. The .025-secooo delay nose fuz\! was selected as the alterlUte
fuzing since the .Ol.second delay f'uze was not available. Thia fuzing
would give banb burst just above the floor le'9'Ol which uould be
effecti va against the u.li lding contents. Tho non-dele,y tail fuze
was selected to give ground level burst to near miss bombs.
3.. lor use against the Himeji Plant at the
Kawanishi Aircrnft Company. aircr.rl't of the 58th lUng were to be
loaded with SOO-pound gennral-purpose bombs fuzed .Ol-second delay
nose and non-dalay tail. This bomb inS se1aeted for use 3ince a
largo pcrcent8,3e of the primary buildings and almost all of the
secondary buildings in the target eres uere of short apan construction.
It was believed that the greater effectiveness of larger size bombs
on the were of long span construction would be out-
weighed b.Y the added destruction of the as Q could
ba achiaved by the multiple hits by use of the 500-pound
size. The .Ol-second dalay nose fuze was selected 3$ it would
bomb penetration 6 to 10 feet beneath the roof leval, where bomb
burst would inflict maximum damage to both buildings "l.rd their contents.
The non-delay tail fuze was selected to givo ground laval burst to
near miss banbs.
14. For use agaiMt tho targets specified in
missions 218, '219, and 220 (Kagamigah9.l'3. Plant of th\! Prlitsubishi Air-
craft Canpany, Ka.gam1gahara P13nt of tho Kal7asak1 Airctaft Compa.IlY.

the 3l3th Wins trerO to be loaded I7itb 4000-pourd Light Case, high-
explosive bombs fuzed instantaneous nasa and non-delay t3.il, These
3 mdssioQ!!l were planned to obtain maximum to the target with
the employtbent of a min1lllwn amount of force (l GrouP. each fran the
)13th 'Ring. uas to be OOlployed agnnst each of th090 3 tarseh). It
W8S OOloivOO that this dalD'3.gc could best be obtained by b!3st since
the primary buildings in the t.'U"get aroas wore of light metal and
typical saw-tooth ro6t construction. The 4C!OO-pound U,Jbt Case Banb
;;as llclected because, vith its hlgbchargo night of Dppraximately
75 per cent. it has at loast 25 por cont roora axplosives per ton th!l.D

wore selected since tho characteristics of this type bomb are such
that dolayod fuzings should not be employod.
