PRE-REQUISITE(S)/PRE-REQUIREMENT(S)
A student will be allowed to follow module y of which module x is a pre-requisite (PR) provided Grade G or Grade E or above has been achieved in module x. A student will be allowed to follow module y of which module x is a pre-requirement (PQ) provided s/he has followed module x and sat for the examinations in module x.

AIMS (Part I)
There is enough evidence that tourism has an impact on any destination area. Several examples of early poor mass tourism development around the world that has contributed to the destruction of tourist destinations natural environment and with a subsequent negative effect of a decline in visitor arrivals. Part I of this module will examine the various positive and negative impacts of tourism and the increasing interest of sustainable tourism as an alternative to curb the adverse impacts of tourism development. The focus is also on the development and management of tourist resources for a long-term sustainability that are essential for successful tourism.

(Part II)
Ecotourism is one the growing segments of the tourism industry worldwide and according to the WTOs Tourism 2020 Vision, the megatrends of tourism is off the beaten track places. Any pristine area uncovered by the tourist industry will have to maintain its natural ecological attractiveness and character by different management & assessment tools. Ecotourism & natural resource management aims to provide the students with an overview of the ecotourism concept, the basic ecotourism structure and management of natural resources.

(Part I)
Impacts of Tourism: Introduction to the Impacts of Tourism, Socio-Cultural Impacts of Tourism, Managing Socio-Cultural Impacts, Economic Impacts of Tourism, Managing Economic Impacts, Physical Impacts of Tourism, Managing Physical Impacts, Principles and Philosophy of Sustainable Tourism, Stakeholder Management and Sustainability, 'Types' of Sustainable Tourism (Ecotourism, Cultural Tourism, etc.) (Part II) Introduction to ecotourism, ecology and ecotourism, Ecotourism design, Ecotourism Planning, Characteristics of Ecotourists, Ecotourism Marketing, Managing the impacts of ecotourism, National Parks and the role of the public sector, ecotourism as a private enterprise, future issues of sustainable tourism

To identify & understand & manage the different tourism impacts economic, socio-cultural & environment impacts associated with tourism.
