Low Carbon Diet


Tuesday, Sept 20th. 6:00pm (2 hrs) - Instructor: Todd Abercrombie.

Learn practical, accessible and effective ways to save money, save energy and save the planet. The Low Carbon Diet is based on a book by David Gershon that focuses on what an individual, a homeowner, a family, a school, a community can do to be a part of the global warming solution. The Low Carbon Diet is an easy to use, how-to plan for making changes in your energy consumption habits.

Astronomical Factors Driving Climate Cycles


Tuesday, Oct 11th. 6:00pm (2 hrs) - Instructor: Sheldon Schafer. In the climate debate, much ado has been made of natural climate cycles, but little has been said about what those factors are that affect climate. Theyre all astronomically based. This course will explore how

factors such as the tilt of the axis of the earth, sunspots, and magnetic storms affect the planets natural cycles. The course will also demonstrate how rising levels of temperature, CO2,
and sea levels can no longer be explained solely through natural climate cycles. They are exacerbated by man-made climate change.

Climate Change 101


Tuesday, Nov 8th. 6:00pm (2 hrs) - Instructor: Melissa Hulting

Are you confused about the science of climate change? There are many questions to this
complex problem. What are the causes of climate change? What is the evidence scientists have linked to climate change? What is the difference between climate change and global warming? How far are we in the process, and can we go back? What steps can we take to mitigate the problem? This course will provide an overview of the science behind climate change, its impacts globally as well as in the Midwest, and policies to address the problem.

Are you ready to move beyond changing light bulbs? Would you like to learn how to take the
next steps toward Going Green? Consider this course the next level. Learn how to do more home energy improvements, reduce household waste, evaluate your household appliances for a possible energy hog, compost, make your transportation efcient, and how to get involved in the Green movement. You will learn a host of valuable information beyond the basics of recycling and What is a CFL?

Todd Abercrombie
Low Carbon Diet Tuesday, Sept 20th. 6:00pm (2 hrs)

Todd Abercrombie is President of EverGreen Home Energy Consultants, Inc. He is certied by the Building Performance Institute as a home energy auditor. Todd is a volunteer with several groups in the area: Global Warming Solutions Group, the Friends of Rocky Glen, and the Heart of Illinois Sierra Club. He is also a green blogger.

Sheldon Schafer
Astronomical Factors Driving Climate Cycles Tuesday, Oct 11th. 6:00pm (2 hrs)

Sheldon Schafer is currently the VP of Education and Planetarium Director at Lakeview Museum of Arts & Sciences, where he has been for 35 years. He has a BS in Astronomy from The Ohio State University and an MS in Science Education with a concentration in Astronomy & Planetarium Education from Wagner College in NYC. He has also taught introductory Astronomy at Bradley University for 31 years. While at the museum he researched and presented his rst planetarium show investigating climate change in 1988, and the astronomical drivers of climate change have been in his astronomy course curriculum for nearly as long.

Melissa Hulting
Climate Change 101 Tuesday, Nov 8th. 6:00pm (2 hrs)

Melissa Hulting is the climate change coordinator at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 5 ofce in Chicago. She is responsible for coordinating Region 5s climate change activities, works to inform others about climate change science and policy, and promotes opportunities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, particularly through EPAs partnership programs. Prior to this position she worked in EPAs Great Lakes National Program Ofce on monitoring and reduction of persistent toxic chemicals in the Great Lakes. Melissa, a native of East Peoria, has a B.S. in Biology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a M.S. in Environmental Management and Policy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Barbara Pierce Drew


Going Green 2.0 Tuesday, Dec 6th. 6:00pm (2 hr)

Barbara Pierce Drew, a Peoria-based freelance writer, copy editor and marketing communications professional, has devoted the past decade to studying all aspects of environmental sustainability, sustainable design and urban planning. She has worked for the Journal Star and Lutheran Social Services of Illinois. Prior to working in central Illinois she was a public relations representative for the St. Louis Public Schools, the St. Louis Public Library and a large Missouri bank. When she is not carpooling her children, she drives a vintage midcenturymodern Schwinn, which the Bushwacker folks tell her is a great bike.
