Labor Day

Grandparents Patriot Day

Day

1st Day of
Fall
Old School Chopper and Hot Rod Show and Swap
July. 12, Virginia Beach, Va.

Ok, what happens when three total gear heads with big hearts get bored….have a car and bike
show, and a swap meet on top of it for charity of course! Three weeks to prepare, make flyers, build
the trophies, secure a venue….not that we are procrastinators….that’s just how we roll.
Three guys, Mike Boyce (professional painter and a kick ass bike builder), Cyril Albert (scariest
leprechaun you’ve ever met and a fantastic Harley mechanic) and yours truly (jack of all trades,
master of none….) decided that the push and polish car and bike shows that have become so “de
rigueur” in the area were long over due for a make-over. We’ve all been to the shows….lots of
pretty, shiny things….some even get driven or ridden to the event, but we are guys who ride those
bikes that most people look at and simply shake their heads. Not much chrome (if any), usually
basic black (when they have paint on them…) and exhaust that would make Mr. Vance and Mr.
Hines blush. We were looking for the roots of the revolution…to see if they were still out there hiding
in the back lot shops where choppers and hot rods got there start over 60 years ago, where guys
wore dark blue jeans, black boots and had a pack of Luckys rolled up in their t-shirt sleeve….there
still there folks, alive and kicking.
The looks for some have changed….board shorts instead of jeans, van’s sneakers instead of
black boots, and the Dickie’s shirts….(well… some things never go out of style), but the attitude
hasn’t. Low, loud and damn near unridable, the formula for cool hasn’t changed in a very long time.
This being the first event, we didn’t expect a big crowd, and we weren’t disappointed…there
were about ten entries in the show, four or five truck and trailers full of guys hawking parts out of the
back but the day was packed with people pulling up on proper vintage pan heads and cutting edge
supercharged customs, 50’s vintage hot rods and 60’s era muscle cars, all with the same thing to
say about the event…..”cool….it’s about time someone’s done this”.
The swap meet for those who brought their cast away parts was profitable, the show for those
stuck around all day was great…(so few entries, everyone got a trophy!), Tim and his staff from
Baker St. were so accommodating and supportive, mother nature gave us one of her finest and
we raised some money for a great cause…the Currituck County High School auto-tech program.
Under the tutelage of their teacher Mark Wooton, a bunch of high school kids put together an ’03 Fat
Boy that runs on bio-diesel, now if that’s not a program worth supporting, I don’t know what is. Mark
and his kids exemplify the type of “outside the box” thinking hot-rodders and bobber builders live
on…(plus, that thing smells like a rolling KFC!)
Special thanks to all those dedicated people who thought enough of the event to stick it out all day
with us, you guys are the greatest…from the 330mm tire hand built customs to the old school VW low-
rider, everything and everyone there could have their picture in the dictionary next to the word “cool”.
Thanks again everyone, hope to see more of you there next time…(Aug. 16th!!!!!!!!! @ Baker St.
Restaurant!)

Knees in the breeze…

going about 60 mph when my Dyna (FXD) started to
loose power. Watching behind me to be sure no one

locked up. I am not an expert, but this wasn’t cool. I
came to a dead stop in the right hand lane about 250
feet from a cross over. It stalled, I couldn’t get it to
move let alone start. I looked in my rear view mirror and off in the distance I
can see traffic heading right for me. I remember praying ,”God Please help
me start this bike.” The bike started, I down shifted to first and gave it hell. I
worked my way to the left lane praying for a little speed to make it to the
turning lane and she locked up again, sliding to a stop just about four inches
off the left lane. The traffic blew by me so close it shook the bike. All I know is,

Thunder in Virginia
Virginia Bike Fest, Petersburg, VA June 29th, 2008
The Thunder was felt all over Dinwiddie County as the Virginia Motorsports
Park opened their gates for their annual Virginia Bike Fest. Cars, trucks,
trailers & Bikes of every make, model & year rolled in for the exciting day of
Bike races on the track, Biker Rodeo, Bike Show, Vendors, Live Music & stage
events. Everything imaginable for the motorcycle enthusiast to enjoy was all
packed into this one. Riders enjoyed taking a leisurely cruise on the Thunder
Roads Cruise Lane which ran throughout the perimeter of the Park, check-
ing out all the different things going on. The Suck Bang Blow Nitro Saloon
was busy all day keeping the heat off with ice cold refreshments. The racing
action on the track was steaming all day long with the screaming of bikes &
the scent of hot burning rubber filling the air. The main stage on the midway
had things going on all day as well. Rocky Angone, affectionately know as
“Reverend Rock”, led the Blessing of the Bikes followed by several stage
events that brought up the best of tattoos, jeans, shorts & swimsuits for both
men & women. The White Oak Bank, rolling in from Fredericksburg, cranked
out a fantastic show, keeping the crowds rockin’ the entire afternoon. The
Red Knights MC Chapt 8 from Petersburg, did an incredible job running the
Bike Show & the Bike Rodeo. Rodeo goers had given some major kudos to
the club for their creatively fun games & many of them had said that this was
the most fun they’d ever had participating in any biker games. Some of the
Thunder Roads Crew was there as well to enjoy the day doing what they love
best…checking out all the bikes & being amongst the wonderful people of our
motorcycle community. Hope to see you all out at the park next year!
