Report on Design adequacy of 150 Tons Sugar Bin

1. Period of investigation : 14 to 31st of July 2003 2.Nature of Investigation : The Proposed 150 Tons Sugar Bin (Drg no :24100995 ) and Supporting Structure for Bin ( Drg No :24100995)was investigated for design adequacy by the finite elment method. The bin was subjected to vertically downward pressure of sugar in the inclined bottom half of the bin and subjected to horizontal pressure as given in table 8.5 and E.q 8.16 of Ref. [1]. Specific gravity of Sugar assumed to be 0.9. The Square cross section constituting the bin is modeled by plate elements, the stiffened horizontal and vertical members (replacing by equal angle by ISMB 150 ),the horizontal beam at the junction and the four columns by the 3D beam elements. The corners of the squares on the vertical portions and inclined were strengthened by 8 Tk Corner plate through out the length. The Program was run using MSC / Nastron .

The stresses obtained by the different members and deflections are computed. The Bending Stresses obtained were less than 100 N/mm 2 and the horizontal outward deformation of the square cross section around 48 mm.The foundation Bolts Were investigated for shear and bending Stresses. They were also within Permissible Limits. The forces and moments of each column are shown in Table 1. Table II gives the details of weight reduction. 3) Conclusion : The net Weight reduction in the order of 5.0 T original Weight of 27.0 T given in the drawing. The unit is optimally designed. It is Suggested to replace ISMB 150 by ISMC150 if it isacceptable.
