Appendix C Jails
The jail is the entry point into corrections, the only correctional facilities most criminals ever see. Jails hold an eclectic mix of adults (and a few juveniles), at all stages of the criminal justice process (Foster, 2006, p. 93).

In a 75- to 150-word response, describe the purpose and design of jails. The main purpose of a jail is to keep the people that choose not to do the right things set forth to protect everyone in our country. I would also say the design of a jail in the earlier years of our criminal justice system was to put the inmate through total discomfort so much that they would not ever want to be there again. The newer designs to jails today I believe make life to easy for the inmates and I believe thats the cause if so many repeat offenders. I just believe that the design of jails these days is a look at how society raises their children. Old days kids were made to show respect hard way of life made for a good society with respect. New jails show how kids and society is so relaxed so we dont hurt feelings and are just lazy spoiled brats which shows in our jail system with the fact there are just so many criminals we worry about overcrowding and releasing criminals out into the world just to put more back in.

Section 2
Identify and describe the five functions of jails.

1. Incarcerate all who have committed crimes or are too unstable to be productive people to society. 2. Isolate those who break laws and those who refuse to be productive parts to society 3. To try and make our country a safe and great place to live for all 4. To make the attempt to help all those who need the help and willing to make the changes to be a better person and be productive. 5. To be a method of punishment and to deter others from committing a crime. Section 3

Section 4

Identify five solutions you feel can resolve these problems.

1. States should look over new construction or update current facilities to hold more inmates. 2. The way to deal with personnel issues is make training mandatory and stay up with training classes 3. States should not have to worry about high dollar prisoner equipment such as weights, TV, and many other luxury equipment that is provided to try and keep places modern. 4. Recreational activities should be fully set on behavior, risk level, and many more things to make sure prison just is not better than the home they were in for next few years. 5. States should look at ridicules cost and get rid of them along with many other cuts that could be made and allow for more personnel on the job and more pay for everyone that truly deserves it. Section 5
Do you feel jails are effective? Explain in 75 to 150 words

I would have to say that I believe the system dose work in a majority standpoint. What I mean by that is most people that have spent time in jails, prisons juvenile detention centers whatever the case maybe change their lives so they do not end back up in one of them places. Then on the other hand there are many people that just do not care if they are in jail because some feel that is their home. That is just the thing about life you have your extremes of both sides it all just depends what is the majority that it affects. Reference:
