ABSTRACT: In the paper, it is discussed how some interdisciplinary books were used in
developing modern environmental education.
A series of the authors publications on issues of ecology and environment led to creative
innovations in biological and environmental education on the basis of introducing new concepts. The
educational innovations are based on the creative results of those publications: (1) new
conceptualization and organization into system of a broad range facts in biological and environmental
sciences, (2) new data on man-made impacts, and (3) new insights into environmental safety,
sustainability, and preventing global change. In the material below the educational use of a series of
the scientific monographs in two important areas of modern ecological science is shown. Those
monographs are relevant to the new discipline of biochemical ecology, and to the equally or even
more important area of conservation biology.
8 books are being used in over 50 universities in more than 5 countries. Among the issues
relevant to new conceptualization: a new analysis of man-made impact on the basis of the concept of
levels of organization of life systems; biochemical ecology (a new discipline crated in the book of
1986); biomachinery ( a new term introduced by the author) of water self-purification, and some
others.

The goal of this publication (which is written on the basis of [14]) is to

analyze some specific examples of the educational use of a series of the scientific
monographs in two important areas of modern ecological science, relevant to the new
discipline of biochemical ecology, and to the equally or even more important area of
conservation biology.
This paper is an updated edition of a previous paper that was written as a
result of the authors presentation at a conference - the V Conference of graduates of
Fulbright Program (23 - 24 March 2009), - dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the
Fulbright program: (Ostroumov S.A. Modernizing education in environmental

In 1986, the book Introduction to Biochemical Ecology was published, in
which new fundamental concepts of ecology were developed. In the book, the basics
of the new scientific discipline of biochemical ecology were formulated, and the new
concepts and terms ecological chemomediators and ecological chemoregulators
were proposed (Ostroumov, 1986). Later, the presentation of those concepts and
terms was repeated in another book, Introduction to Problems of Biochemical
Ecology (Telitchenko, Ostroumov, 1990).
We also coauthored books on conservation of biodiversity (Yablokov,
Ostroumov, 1983, 1985; 1991). In those books, a new conceptual approach
according to the levels of organization of life systems - was used to classify and to
put into a system the data on the contemporary man-made impact on the biosphere.
The books (Ostroumov, 1986; Telitchenko, Ostroumov, 1990; Yablokov,
Ostroumov, 1983, 1985; 1991) provided the new concepts that helped organize and
put into a logical and modern system a massive body of factual information. The

book were cited in the syllabuses of educational courses of universities and other
educational institutions in more than 5 countries.

in ecology and other academic disciplines is given below in Tables 1-4.

demonstrated that the new facts, scientific knowledge, innovative concepts and
approaches in organizing factual data that were presented in the books (Ostroumov,
1986; Telitchenko, Ostroumov, 1990; Yablokov, Ostroumov, 1983, 1985; 1991) were
accepted and used in the education of students in Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Lithuania,
and Georgia [13]. It was used also in other countries e.g. in Poland (Ostroumow,
1992), Malaysia (Yablokov, Ostroumov, 1991), and Czech Republic (Jablokov,
Ostroumov, 1991), e.g., in the University of South Bohemia.
More recently, some new evidence was found in Internet on using some of
our books in other educational institutions. Among them those located in the cities as
diverse as Lutsk (Ukraine), Angarsk, Ussuriysk, and ( ).
This demonstrates a broad applicability of the interdisciplinary monographs,
and their usefulness in modernizing the education in ecology and environmental
sciences.
