Example 1:
Upon graduation in July 1999 from Tsinghua University, the best engineering college in China,
with a B.S. degree, I was selected by the university, on the basis of my outstanding academic
records, to enter graduate studies without having to take the mandatory admission exam.
Example 2:
As a top student of physics from Peking University, I would like to pursue a successful academic
career by studying at your distinguished graduate program.

Example 4:

BBS

Perhaps the most important influence that has shaped the person I am today is my upbringing in a
traditional family-oriented Persian and Zoroastrian culture.
Example 5:
I now prepare to become more than just a professional in the field of history, but in fact a
professional historian.
Example 6:
I have always been motivated toward achievement: my high school classmates voted me Most
likely to have a publishable resume.
Example 7:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I, I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the
difference.
- Robert FrostHave you ever taken the road less traveled? When you drive home from work, do you ever explore?
Sure, it might take longer than usual, and there may be unpleasant stops along the way, but
occasionally you will find an unexpected surprise. By casting aside strict conventions and routines
and by taking risks, we can achieve things we never considered or thought possible.
Example 8:
During my senior year at Purdue University, I made a decision that has impacted the entire course
of my education. While my classmates were making definite decisions about their career paths, I
chose to implement a five-year plan of development and growth for myself. I designed this plan in
order to examine various careers that I thought might interest me, as well as to expand upon my
abilities at the time.
Example 9:
I am most interested in a career in psychoneurotic immunology. Scientists who work in this area
study the biological connection between the mind and immunological factors relating to health
and healing. This is my ideal occupation because it includes my two criteria for a career: I would
be doing something to benefit society and performing a job that is enjoyable, challenging and
meaningful to me.

Example 13:
I want my legal education to make a bigger difference than I can as an engineer, but with a strong
family to draw upon I cannot help but live a successful life.
Example 14:
Ultimately, I aim to gain a faculty position at a university and to continue my involvement in
innovative research in the field while directly encouraging the development of aspiring engineers,
both in the classroom and laboratory. In this manner I believe I can make a significant and
purposeful contribution to the scientific community while gaining a great deal of personal
satisfaction.
Example 15:
The work I saw at Graduate School of Design had that same element of innovation and freshness
that I strive for, the one that goes beyond the ordinary path. I want to be an explorer and to face
challenges that I can solve with sheer will and creativity.
Example 16:
While my GPA may not be as high as some applicants, my academic record shows a consistent
positive. I know I have the intelligence, ability, and determination to achieve success in dentistry;
I only need the opportunity. My dental research experience combined with my academic
background, personal qualities, and leadership abilities makes me well suited to accept the
challenges in the field of dentistry.
Example 17:
Stanford's diversity offers an environment for learning, both inside and outside the classroom. I
hope to share my varied knowledge with my classmates and to take from them a new
understanding of topics that are foreign to me. I believe that no other school provides students
with the combination of education and environment offered by Stanford. Its outstanding academic
reputation, mingled with its diverse environment and thriving Bay Area location, creates an

opportunity for growth that is second to none. I have many ambitions for myself as I embark on
this stage of my life. I believe that an education from Stanford will provide invaluable experiences
and skills that will allow me to become a successful and innovative business leader in the new
millennium.
Example 18:
I know how difficult and also how rewarding research can be because both of my parents are
researchers, and I have done research projects for my science courses. The most important thing,
of course, is that humanity may benefit. Such a pursuit of knowledge would be incredibly
satisfying because of its potential to help so many. To me, the call to a lifetime of this work is
irresistible.
Example 19:
As I continue to write and edit, I rediscover my love for language. To entertain, to explain, to be
able to say what I mean and help others say what they mean. Language is the highest rung of
expression, and I mean to climb it.
Example 20:
Personally, I know I am educated as long as I remain tenaciously determined to understanding the
world and to maintaining an open mind. Of course, this goal of remaining educated will lead me to
Harvard next year and to a doctorate in physics in another university. However, these are just
signs of an educated person. To be truly educated, I must be committed to learning my entire life
and to making new discoveries in science, whether or not they contradict accepted theory.
Education cannot be measured by the number of degrees a person has earned. Instead, education is
a mind set that must last one's entire life. If, at the moment of my death, I am still dedicated to
grasping misunderstood concepts, I can say that I am truly educated, as Einstein, Rutherford, and
Galileo were before me.

Hiking to Understanding
Surrounded by thousands of stars, complete silence, and spectacular mountains, I stood atop New
Hampshire's Presidential Range awestruck by nature's beauty. Immediately, I realized that I must
dedicate my life to understanding the causes of the universe's beauty. In addition, the hike taught
me several valuable lessons that will allow me to increase my understanding through scientific
research.
Although the first few miles of the hike up Mt. Madison did not offer fantastic views, the vistas
became spectacular once I climbed above tree line. Immediately, I sensed that understanding the
natural world parallels climbing a mountain. To reach my goal of total comprehension of natural

BBS

42

AdvancedEdu.bdwm.net

BBS

phenomena, I realized that I must begin with knowledge that may be uninteresting by itself.
However, this knowledge will form the foundation of an accurate view of the universe. Much like
every step while hiking leads the hiker nearer the mountain peak; all knowledge leads the scientist
nearer total understanding.
Above tree line, the barrenness and silence of the hike taught me that individuals must have their
own direction. All hikers know that they must carry complete maps to reach their destinations;
they do not allow others to hold their maps for them. Similarly, surrounded only by mountaintops,
sky, and silence, I recognized the need to remain individually focused on my lifes goal of
understanding the physical universe.
At the summit, the view of the surrounding mountain range is spectacular. The panorama offers
view of hills and smaller mountains. Some people during their lives climb many small hills.
However, to have the most accurate view of the world, I must be dedicated to climbing the biggest
mountains I can find. Too often people simply hike across a flat valley without ascending because
they content themselves with the scenery. The mountain showed me that cannot content myself
with the scenery. When night fell upon the summit, I stared at the slowly appearing stars until they
completely filled the night sky. Despite the windy conditions and below freezing temperatures, I
could not tear myself away from the awe-inspiring beauty of the cosmos. Similarly, despite the
frustration and difficulties inherent in scientific study, I cannot retreat from my goal of universal
understanding.
When observing Saturn's rising, the Milky Way Cloud, and the Perseid meteor shower, I
simultaneously felt a great sense of insignificance and purpose. Obviously, earthly concerns are
insignificant to the rest of the universe. However, I experienced the overriding need to understand
the origins and causes of these phenomena. The hike also strengthened my resolve to climb the
mountain of knowledge while still taking time to gaze at the wondrous scenery. Only then can the
beauty of the universe and the study of science be purposefully united. Attaining this union is my
lifelong goal.

I get to know ABC more than one year ago while she was taking Taiwan Literature Studies, which
I taught. Since this sphere of knowledge is not as familiar to our students as mainland literature
and thus required a basic and sound mastery of general literature, it was designed for seniors who
take a special interest and are willing to make extra efforts to study it. ABCs excellent
performance both in and after class made me quite satisfied with her. In that semester with more
than eighty students taking the course, it was after only a few classes that I began to notice her;
because nearly every class she sat in front rows whose seats would be occupied only if the student
was one of those arrived early. Each time I faced her I could see what a teacher desires most from
her students: enthusiasm, concentration and timely feedback resulting from active thinking while
listening to me.
And what impressed me is ABCs initiative in learning her chosen field. There is a Documentary
Center for Taiwan Research in our university library, which contains abundant collections and
holds seminars nonscheduledly. ABC must have spent much time there ever since she registered
my course. I came across her there several times and understood the reason she could frequently
visited me with her novel ideas and questions worth of discussing.
In the final paper ABC worked on a well-chosen topic about the gender consciousness in Taiwan
literature. I was satisfied that she could review the literatures in the reading list critically and was
always willing to exchange her thoughts with me during the process of paper-writing. So I was not
at the least surprised when I saw her convincing arguments in the end.
Through further contacts with her, I found ABC takes a positive attitude towards research, for she
perseveres and manages to ask questions that intrigue her and then try to search for answers.
On the whole, ABCs initiative, critical ideas and seriousness to academic studies provide her with
a solid foundation for her future research work. I must say that she is one of those students with
the strongest motivation and one of the most promising to do doctoral work. Now she takes
sociology as a more challenging field and desires to pursue studies and devotes to new intellectual
adventure in it. I respect her decision and support her choice of your Ph.D. program. In a field
other than her undergraduate major I still believe she will make an excellent student and assistant
and I would appreciate your favorable considerations to her application.
Should you have further questions about her, please feel free to write to me.
Faithfully yours,

Recommendation Letter 2
Dear Sir/Madam,
As the former teacher and advisor of Ms. ABC, I feel entitled and am glad to write this letter
as her reference for application to your Ph.D. program.
In the fall of 2000, ABC attended my class on Qu Verse in Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties.
Later, she audited another course on the Folk Culture of Yuan Dynasty. In both classes, ABC made
a deep impression on my mind. I found her attentive in listening and active in participating in class
discussions. After classes, she also worked diligently, reading not only the assignments I gave, but
also other reference books concerning the authors an works we were to deal with. This enabled her
to be better prepared than her fellow students and could put forward ingenious and well-thought
ideas in free discussions.
I would like to particularly point out one case ABC impressed me deeply. For the course Qu
Verse in Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties, as was mentioned above, I assigned a reading report as
the final examination. When most of the students were laboring through writing the report, ABC
took the initiative to submit two papers, one dealing with the common characteristics and
differences of Qu Vers in different dynasties and concluding to the development trend; the other
focusing on a specific Qu Verse master in Qing dynasty. Both were written well an reflected her
talent in literary thinking as well as her painstaking efforts. Therefore, while the majority of the
attendants receive scores ranging from 65 to 80, I graded her a high score of 88 for this course.
Moreover, ABC possesses an agreeable and stimulating character. She is hardworking,
intelligent, mature in thought and popular with her teachers and fellow students. Besides academic
acquisition from regular courses, she made efforts to explore research opportunities and was active

in quite a lot of departmental as well as university-level extracurricular activities. For example,

from my colleague Prof. Chen Lianshan who led this summers folklore fieldwork, I learnt that
ABC did a very good job out of 29 students and assisted him in collecting a great deal of
first-hand ballad materials with high research value. In addition, to my knowledge, ABC once
acted as the assistant secretary of SICA (Students International Communication Association) in
Peking University. This is a renowned student club among universities and colleges in Beijing.
Every three weeks she organized and chaired a forum between PKU students and foreign scholars,
exchange students as well as friends. Even when she was under great pressure of both academic
work and social activities, she was able to maintain her easy-going nature and optimism.
Because of her outstanding performance shown in SICA, she was elected as a student assistant in
PKU Division of International Cooperation to work for three months. Im sure all these experience
enriched and benefited her a lot. Compared with her peers, ABC gained a wider mind and
sharpened her organizational, communicational and interpersonal skills. She is a student
determined to do what she aims at, keeping her energy level high an always trying her best. Due to
her exceptional overall performance and strong drive throughout the undergraduate studies, she is
recommended as one of the only three students to enter the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the
whole Chinese department this year.
Now ABC told me about her thoughts of studying abroad and pursuing advanced studies in
your university. I would like to support her and recommend her to you because I believe if
admitted, she will also excel herself in your program. I have no doubt that your admission and
financial assistance to Ms. ABC will be much appreciated and rewarded, and please feel free to

Any and all letters are considered in our decisions.

But I will say that we have the view that most recommendation letters from China are written by
the students and signed by the professors. We see the huge number of letters that these
professors must write, and think it impractical for a professor to write so many letters. We end
up looking more at the research aptitude and credentials of the students than the recommendation
letters.

3.5.2

How to write a research proposal

When you are applying for a research degree, like the PhD, you will very probably have to write a
research proposal as a part of your application file. A PhD is awarded mainly as the result of your
making a genuine contribution to the state of knowledge in a field of your choice. Even though
this is not the Nobel Prize yet, getting the degree means you have added something to what has
previously been known on the subject you have researched. But first you have to prove you are
capable of making such a contribution, and therefore write a research proposal that meets certain
standards. The goal of a research proposal (RP) is to present and justify a research idea you have
and to present the practical ways in which you think this research should be conducted.
When you are writing a RP, keep in mind that it will enter a competition, being read in line with
quite a few other RPs. You have to come up with a document that has an impact upon the reader:
write clearly and well structured so that your message gets across easily. Basically, your RP has to
answer three big questions: what research project will you undertake, why is important to know

BBS

60

AdvancedEdu.bdwm.net

BBS

that thing and how will you proceed to make that research.
In order to draw the researcher's attention upon your paper, write an introduction with impact, and
that leads to the formulation of your hypothesis. The research hypothesis has to be specific,
concise (one phrase) and to lead to the advancement of the knowledge in the field in some way.
Writing the hypothesis in a concise manner and, first, coming up with a good hypothesis is a
difficult mission. This is actually the core of your application: you're going to a university to do
this very piece of research. Compared to this, the rest of the application is background scenery.
Take your time to think of it. When you have an idea, be careful at the formulation. A well-written
hypothesis is something of an essay's thesis: it provides a statement that can be tested (argues
ahead one of the possible answers to a problem), it is an idea, a concept, and not a mere fact, and
is summed up in one phrase. In some cases, you will have no idea what the possible answer to a
problem worth being researched is, but you will be able to think of a way to solve that problem,
and find out the answer in the meantime. It's ok in this case, to formulate a research question,
rather than a hypothesis. Let those cases be rare, in any way.
Another piece of advice when writing your hypothesis, regarding the trendy research fields:
chances are great that they're trendy because somebody has already made that exciting discovery,
or wrote that splendid paper that awoke everybody's interest in the first place. If you're in one of
these fields, try to get a fresh point of view upon the subject; make new connections, don't be
100% mainstream. This will make the project even more stimulating for the reader. Imagine that
you are writing about the trendiest subject, with absolutely no change in the point of view, and you
are given the chance to make the research. Trends come and go, fast; what are the chances that, in
four years' time, when your research is done and you are ready to publish your results, one of
those well-known professors who dispose of huge research grants has already said whatever you
had to say?
Remember how, in a structured essay, right after the thesis you would present the organization of
your essay, by enumerating the main arguments you were going to present? Same thing should
happen in a RP. After stating your thesis, you should give a short account of your answers to those
three questions mention earlier. State, in a few phrases, what will be learned from your research,
that your project will make a difference, and why is that important to be known. You will have to
elaborate on both of these later in the paper.
The next step in writing your proposal is to prove that that particular piece of research has not
been done yet. This section is usually called Literature Review. Inside it, you have to enumerate
and critically analyze an impressive list of boring bibliography. The conclusion you should
objectively reach is that your idea of research has not been undertaken yet. Even more, you use
this opportunity to prove solid theoretical knowledge in the field, and build the theoretical bases of
your project. One tip: don't review all the articles and books in the fields even if you mention them
in the bibliography list; pay attention in your analysis to those you will build on. Another one:
avoid jargon when writing your RP. The chances are great that the person(s) who will read your
and another 1000 research proposals are not specialists in that very field - niche you are examining.
If you are applying for a grant with or foundation or something similar, it might happen that those

BBS

61

AdvancedEdu.bdwm.net

BBS

reading your paper are not even professors, but recruiters, donors, etc. And even if they actually
are professors, one of the reasons busy people like them agree to undertake a huge, and sometimes
voluntary, work, is the desire to meet some diversity, some change from their work - so maybe
they'll read applications for another specialization. The capacity to get your message across in
clear, easy-to-grasp concepts and phrases is one of the winning papers' most important advantages.
So far, you have proven you have a research idea, that you are familiar with the field, and that
your idea is new. Now, why should your project be worth researching? Because it advances
knowledge, ok. But is this knowledge that anybody will need? Maybe nobody knows for sure how
the shoelaces were being tied in the XIXth century, but who cares, beyond two lace-tying
specialists? Find arguments to convince the reader that s/he should give you money for that
research: practical use, accelerating the development of knowledge in your or other fields, opening
new research possibilities, a better understanding of facts that will allow a more appropriate
course of action are possible reasons. Be clear and specific. Don't promise to save the world, it
might be too much to start with. Even James Bond succeeds that only towards the end of the
movie.
We approach now one of the most difficult parts of writing a research proposal: the methodology.
In short, what actions are you going to take in order to answer the question? When will you know
whether the hypothesis has been proven wrong, or has survived enough tests to be considered, for
now, valid? Those tests and the way you are supposed to handle them to give rigor to your
research is what is understood under methods. Methods divide in qualitative (interviews,
questionnaires) and quantitative (statistics, stuff that deals intensively with numbers). For some
projects qualitative methods are more appropriate, for some quantitative, while for most a mixture
of the two is adequate. You should pick your methods and justify your choice. Research
methodology, however, is too a complicated thing to be explained here. And this is why it's so
tough: not much attention is given to teaching it in Eastern Europe. Try, before writing your RP, to
read a bit more about methodology - on the Internet you will find for sure some articles - and
decide which methods suit your project best. Don't forget: reading theoretical pieces of your work
and providing a critical analysis of those is also a kind of research. It's fine to provide a rough
schedule of your research; some grant programs will also require a detailed budget, even though
for scholarships this is unlikely.
Conclusions: After working your way through the difficult methodological part, you only have to
write your conclusions. Shortly recap why your hypothesis is new, why it advances knowledge,
why is it worth researching and how, from a practical point of view, are you going to do that.
Overall, the capacity of your project to answer the research question should come out crystal clear
from the body of the paper, and especially from the conclusions. If this happens, it means you
have a well-written RP, and you have just increased you chances for having a successful
application.
One last word: how big should your RP be? In most cases, this is specified in the application form.
If it is not, we suggest that you keep it at about 1500 words (that's 3 pages, single-spaced, with 12
size Times New Roman). In fewer words it can be really tough to write a good RP. With more you

might bore your readers. Which we hope will not happen.

Inventory Management: Challenge, Solution Approaches and Applications

Author
Address
1. Introduction
In daily life we contact with dozens of inventories, usually without thinking too hard about them.
For example, the cash, food, drink, etc. For the corporations, they care how to supply the demands
so that they should have a good control of their inventory products to decrease the costs and
increase the profits. Fortunately more and more researchers are researching on the theory and
applications of inventory management (IM). They have achieved good results. However the range
of applications of the theory needs enlarging to boarder sense such as allocation of empty
containers at the ports and routing problems, which we'll discuss in detail.
2. Background
Now we review the allocation of empty containers, which belongs to shipping industry. All
container lines complete freight rates, transit time and quality customer services. Since a shipping
line pays substantial operational expenses to maintain its container fleet, it is important that
shippers plan and schedule efficiently the inventory of both company-owned containers and
leased-containers. Yield management in global containerization problems consists of allocation
and routing problems. In order to achieve the minimal total cost, allocation problems consider how
to allocate empty containers to fulfill the shippers' demand, while routing problems focus on how
to plan the vessel's route to distribute empty containers to terminal. According to the Port
Development Board, throughput at Hong Kong port will shoot up to 31 million TEUs (twenty-foot
equivalent units) by 2005, to 36 million TEUs by 2011 and to 40 million TEUs by 2016 (South
China Morning Post, 27/6/1997). Shipping companies in Hong Kong have been competing
globally to provide world-class container transportation services. In order to increase a company's
competitive edge, it is important to have better control of its expenditure and to be more
responsive to shippers' demand. Of course, the problem can be viewed as a transportation system,
which is rather complex organizations which involve a great deal of human and material resources

and which display intricate relationships and trade-offs among the various decisions and
management policies affecting their different components. Here we introduce inventory theory
and achieve a simple policy about how to allocate empty containers at one port. How to allocate
all empty containers at each port is still unknown. We want to modify our former result to fit in
this case, or create new methods to solve this problem. After figuring out the outline of allocating
all empty containers at each port, we'll touch how to transfer the empty containers from one port
to the others. Considering specific parameters such as insurance costs, handling costs, traffic costs,
positions of the ports, we want to achieve good import and export methods for empty containers.
3. Methodology
For allocating empty containers at one port we have achieved the optimal (U, D) policy, which is
that increasing (decreasing) empty containers up (down) to the amount U (D) when the amount of
empty containers now is less (not less) than U (D), doing nothing when the amount comes into the
range [U, D]. However allocating all empty containers, the next step, is more complex, and it is
different from the former work in multi-echelon inventory models. Ours includes the fixed number,
total empty containers, while the former models tackled it either without capacity limitation, or
capacity limitation ranged by low and upper bounds. Always new problems and new methods help
each other. We want to seek such methods to solve our problem, with effort, labor and spirit.
4. Concluding Remarks
The problems have been presented above. And there are other applications to different problems,
for example, gas control, counterfeit products control, etc. They are all tied with inventory theory.
(Of course you can solve them with other methods). To solve these types of problems requires
applying inventory theory to accommodate to new circumstances, which will be my proposed area
for my PhD study.

Dear Sir or Madam:

I am very sorry that I cannot afford the application fee at this time. The application fee of 70 US
dollars is a great burden posed on me, since I am now an undergraduate in Peking University and I
do not have a monthly income. The total income of my parents is about 1500 RMB per month,
which is equal to only 180 US dollars. During my university years I depend wholly on my
parents' poor income. Every month they have to squeeze some money to support my cost of living
at university. Therefore, the application fee is really a financial burden to me.
However, to advance my study at Columbia University is the most important thing for my future. I
will try my best to find a part-time job and to pay the application fee as soon as possible. But
before I am able to pay the application fee, would you please consider my application as well? Or
will you pay this fee for me as a loan until I arrive as a student? I am confident that I am a
competitive applicant with overall GPA of 3.88/4 and ranking the 2nd in my class. I sincerely hope
you can consider my situation and waive my application fee.
Thank you for your support and your assistance will be highly appreciated.
Sincerely yours,

Please note that we require official transcripts, two letters of recommendation, official test
scores and the application fee. Exceptions to these requirements will be determined by the Office
of Admissions upon receipt of the application.
In fairness to everyone, we require all applicants to submit and application fee and original
reports of test scores.
GRE scores are not mandatory. TOEFL and TWE scores are. You are correct when you say
that these scores can be verified by ETS. I would need to have a photocopy of the report, however.
The deadline for the fellowship competition is January 15th; the graduate programs must make
their decisions of fellowship nominees by early February. If your official scores do not arrive by
that time, you probably will not be nominated for a fellowship but may be able to compete for
research and teaching positions, which sometimes have a more flexible deadline.
We do need to have official copies to process the application form. You need to have indicated
to both GRE and TOEFL to send your scores directly to Princeton. I didn't realize they charged
you for this, though. We can call the testing centers and get official scores in case it is the only
missing piece of information, but eventually we do have to have the official copy or the
application will not be accepted. I apologize that there is not any other system set up to handle this
kind of situation. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Thank you.
When you to apply on line at http://www.northwestern.edu/graduate/admission/onlineapp.html,
or enter your mailing address information in order to receive paper application materials by mail at
http://www.imgweb.nwu.edu/tgsappreq/. You then send your TOEFL scores to the Graduate
school and they send them to us at Chemical Engineering. We don't require originals but the
Graduate School does.
The Graduate School requires that official copies of GRE and TOEFL scores be sent to them;
they generally do not accept photocopies as "official" test scores. However, you can obtain more
information through the Graduate School
We can accept photocopies for our review process. However, the Graduate School will not
allow us to extend an offer of admission until we receive the official copies.
The Office of Admissions at Iowa State University requires official scores.

Tax is heavy in US. There are federal tax and state tax. Tax will cut 20-30% of your total
income every year. Generally, tax is reduced from your payroll check automatically. But there is
some exception for Chinese F-1 students. You can fill some forms which mention you are Chinese
F-1 student and the type of assistantship you are holding (such as TA, RA and fellowship). For
every Chinese F-1 student, their first &5000 income of the year is tax free. If you have a
fellowship, your whole fellowship income is tax free, so, fellowship is good not only because it is
duty free but also tax free. If you are holding TA or RA and find there is tax reduction in your
payroll check, do not worry about it. At the end of the year, you will receive a notice about how

much tax has been reduced from your income. Keep this notice. Next year, government will give
everyone tax return form to fill out. You can fill out the form which informs the government how
much tax it should return. Not all the tax of TA and RA income can get back; you have to check
your friend who has filled this tax return form before. Anyway, fellowship is the best; you don't
need to worry anything. TA and RA get their payment monthly, but fellowship holder gets their
semester payment at the beginning of the semester.

I am pleased to inform you that we are recommending your admission into our graduate
program. A formal offer letter will be mailed to you early next week, but I wanted to let you
know in advance of its arrival. Below is a copy of the letter you will receive.
Email offer Offer Letter
**********************************************************************
Dear XXX:
I am pleased to inform you that the Department of Mathematics is offering you admission to its
graduate program and a half-time graduate assistantship 1/2
1/4 . The stipend will be at least $13,000 for the ten month academic year
2003-04, with a reduction of tuition and fees from $8130 to $478 per semester and $239 for the
summer session. tuition waiver tuition scholarship

(These fees are from 2002-2003; there will be a slight increase for 2003-04.) If you
pass the departmental screening and are able to be given a classroom assignment the stipend will
be at least $14,200. Also, students who perform their duties satisfactorily during the year may hold
a summer teaching assistantship in 2004 to earn an additional stipend (see enclosure).

Since your appointment is half-time or more for at least a semester, you will be enrolled
automatically in the Graduate Student Staff Health Plan. If you choose to accept this plan, the
University will subsidize approximately 80% of the cost. TA RA
Fellowship offer fellowship
Additional coverage for a
spouse and other dependents is available, but without the University subsidy.
Other pertinent features of the assistantship are described in the enclosure. Please read this
carefully, especially the sections on duties and the dates for the academic year and orientation
week. International Students and Scholars will have an orientation program on August 14 and 15
that you are required to attend.TA You will receive
more information on this program when you receive your I-20 or IAP-66. You should not apply
for your visa or make travel plans until you receive a formal letter of admission from the Graduate
School and your Certificate of Eligibility (I-20 or IAP-66, which you need in order to apply for a
visa) from the Office of International Student Services. These papers
will be sent to you as soon as all admission procedures are completed. Visa applications to the
United States are being processed much more slowly than in the past. Because of this we strongly
encourage you to decide on our offer and let us know as soon as possible.
If you wish to accept this appointment, please respond in writing by April 15
4.15 . Under a resolution of the Council of Graduate Schools,
acceptance of an offer of financial support for the next academic year completes an agreement that
both you and Purdue University expect to honor. If you accept our offer before April 15 and
subsequently desire to withdraw your acceptance, you may submit in writing a resignation of the
appointment at any time through April 15. However, an acceptance given or left in force after
April 15 commits you not to accept another offer without first obtaining a written release from
Purdue University.
While it is your obligation to respond in writing by April 15, it would be very helpful to me if you
would let me know your intentions as soon as possible.
I hope you will write soon accepting our offer of an assistantship. Please do not hesitate to contact
me if you have any questions.

Sincerely yours,
XXX

Resolution Regarding Graduate Scholars, Fellows, Trainees, and Assistants Acceptance of an offer
of financial support (such as a graduate scholarship, fellowship, traineeship, or assistantship) for
the next academic year by a prospective or enrolled graduate student completes an agreement that
both student and graduate school expect to honor. In that context, the conditions affecting such
offers and their acceptance must be defined carefully and understood by all parties. Students are
under no obligation to respond to offers of financial support prior to April 15; earlier deadlines for
acceptance of such offers violate the intent of this Resolution. In those instances in which a
student accepts an offer before April 15, and subsequently desires to withdraw that acceptance, the
student may submit in writing a resignation of the appointment at any time through April 15.
However, an acceptance given or left in force after April 15 commits the student not to accept
another offer without first obtaining a written release from the institution to which a commitment
has been made. Similarly, an offer by an institution after April 15 is conditional on presentation by
the student of the written release from any previously accepted offer. It is further agreed by the
institutions and organization subscribing to the above Resolution that a copy of this Resolution
should accompany every scholarship, fellowship, traineeship, and assistantship offer.

Dear XXX
Thank your for your recent e-mail, which informed your grant of my admission and financial aid.
However, It is difficult for me to make the decision of accept or reject your offer now, because
some universities are currently in the process of reviewing and evaluating my applications and
will reach their decisions in these days. So I would appreciate you very much if you can give me
X more days to make my decision. In fact, I am still seriously interested in joining your graduate
program.
Sincerely yours,

Dear Committee Members,

I am an applicant to your Ph.D. program in ******* for the fall of 2003. (Name: ****, Date of
Birth: ****) I am deeply sorry that I have to withdraw my application, because I have already
received several offers up to now, and almost decide to accept one of them. ****, including the
world-class groups in *******, is still a perfect institution for me, but I do not think it is
appropriate to take up your precious time and effort in evaluating my application in this case. And
I think that it will be inconvenient for other applicants if I am still on your list.
I am confident that your department will be very successful in recruiting new ******* students.
Also, I hope that you could give favorable considerations to other Chinese applicants, especially
those from ******* University, which is the best university in China. I believe that there are about
*** graduates in ******* University who are capable to study ******* in the very top
universities in the States.
PS: Please forgive my rudeness. I don't know which person I should contact, so I'm writing to you.
If you are not in charge of this affair, please inform the right person.
Very Sincerely,
XXX

after completing the courses to which you have been accepted.
1Requirements
You must attach a study plan to the application. It will normally be 1-2 pages in length.
It should address the following issues:
1)

Why you wish to come to Canada to study at the school and in the program for which you
have been accepted;

2)

What is your overall educational goal;

3)

Why you are not pursuing less expensive alternatives in China (what are those alternatives?
have you investigated them?);

My name is ***. I was born on ***. As Finance major in Nankai University, I have always longed
for an opportunity to receive the most advanced education in
my great honor to be admitted, and also fully
University, to get my master's

financial economics. Thus, it is

supported, by the Economics Department of AAA

degree in my dream-school. And this study plan is submitted

along with my completed package, to strengthen my application for Canadian student's visa.
Ever since I was a child my ambition has been to become a university professor, to conduct
in-depth research, stay with young students, and enjoy the freedom of flexible schedule. In this
aspect, an academic job is not only my educational goal, but also my career, and my life. Now that
I have laid a solid knowledge foundation after four-year' fruitful college work, I hope with all my
heart that the rigorous training in AAA University would help me realize my dream.
The one-year master's program offered by Economics Department, AAA University attracts me
just like a shortcut to my arena. AAA University is notable for its traditional strength in financial
economics, with seven professors concentrating on this field and having made great contribution
to the discipline, which is her advantage over any similar programs in China. And fulfilling the

BBS

224

AdvancedEdu.bdwm.net

BBS

whole program in a year will save me two years to get the master's degree compared with the
three-year's Chinese graduate programs. I believe this schedule will make my experience in AAA
University challenging but effective. I can get a degree that works as soon as possible. Moreover,
AAA University has granted me the full financial support in the form of Teaching Assistantship,
sum up to Canadian Dollars BBB per semester and BBB*3 per year. Since the tuition fee is
extraordinarily low for international student in AAA University ($CCC per semester), this amount
should be sufficient to cover all my expenses considering my thrift habit. On the other hand,
Chinese graduate programs would charge me RMB 7000per year with rare financial assistant.
Although AAA University would demand me to do some assistant work, this would also constitute
an important part of my training for the academic life. In conclusion, it is only rational for me to
choose AAA University instead of Chinese universities.
Another fact I want to mention is that personally I have sufficient money to study abroad.
Although I did not request my parents to give me financial support, they are definitely willing and
able to afford my education. My mother is a CPA, and serves as the Chief Accountant in People's
Insurance Company of China DDD Branch with annual income exceeding EEE after tax. And my
father is a government official having served in economics management field for over ten years.
They have promised me to support me whenever necessary, and it is the love from my family that
stimulates me to go further in my economics research pilgrimage.
Thanks to the booming of China's economy, the demand for economics professors, especially
those who have studied abroad and understand the real market, is extremely high in China now. So
studying abroad is a matter not only of family's proud and social respect, but also of better
financial reward. And I plan to move on to a PhD either in AAA, FFF, or in America before I come
back to China as an accomplished financial economist. My root is in China. The passion to serve
my motherland has compelled me to fly west, and will also draw me back considering the simple
fact that I can become a better government policy advisor here in my home. I hope you will
consider my application favorably. The time and trouble you take is highly appreciated!

much knowledge on ZZZ.

During my study in the university, I absorbed

I read many papers and books on the subject, and attended many

lectures in the university. Because of my hard work, I became one of the best students in my
department.
Pursuing graduate study will be a challenge in my life.

YYY Universitys famous study facilities

and resounded faculty have made YYY an ideal university for me.

BBS

225

As an international student,

AdvancedEdu.bdwm.net

BBS

the available financial support of graduate students at YYY University is also a factor when
choosing a university for further study.

The ZZZ department at YYY University is a famous

department, and plays an important role in ZZZ research.

Studying in this department will be

very helpful for my further work.

It is very nice that I have got the admission and full financial support from YYY University,
Canada.

They offer me admission of master in ZZZ, I will work hard to get the degree and

further financial support.

After getting the degree in YYY University, I will come back to China, seeking a job in a Chinese
company.

I wish I could be an engineer, who masters advanced technology.

I will contribute

what I learn to the development of China.
