Planting Seeds for Tomorrow builds on this natural optimism and encourages garden club members to participate. The focus for this administration will be on two words in this themeGROW and PLANTas we look at different ways to attract new members, to better serve our existing members, and to reach out to the gardening community. We will GROW in Educational Opportunities By offering a new series of basic floral design classes. When I joined a garden club, I just wanted to learn how to arrange flowers so that I could have a centerpiece on the dining room table. I was fortunate that my garden club offered regular floral design workshops, but not all garden club members have this same opportunity. By sponsoring lectures in partnership with botanical gardens, districts, and other organizations By holding Dig In workshops specifically for club presidents and club officers to highlight VFGC Projects We will GROW in Membership By connecting with existing non-federated garden clubsthese clubs already share a similar interest with VFGC, lets convince them that being part of a larger organization has distinct benefits. By presenting a series of workshops/programs at military bases and other civic organizations in order to generate interest in garden clubs and to establish new garden clubs By providing incentives for members to bring guests to basic floral design classeseven more incentives if the guest joins a garden club! We will GROW in Communication By publishing a digital version of Old Dominion Gardener on the website By communicating bi-monthly with VFGC Board members, district officers and club presidents with a digital newsletter Grow Now in order to work together as a whole organizationnot just individual clubs and districts By making VFGC website more user friendly for mobile devices

We will PLANT Community Gardens with a new program, Plant Together This new program will encourage garden clubs, civic groups, youth groups, etc. to schedule a work day during National Garden Week to plant or spruce up community gardens. Each club or group that registers with VFGC will be provided with a publicity packet to help spread the word that garden clubs benefit the community with beautification projects. We will PLANT by establishing a Branching Out grant program for club community beautification projects. We will PLANT seeds for tomorrow by continuing the Keys to the Future grants for youth-centered gardening programs. Since its inception in 2007, over $25,000 has been awarded in these grants and in the past 2 years alone, over 5000 youth in Virginia benefited from this program. The time is NOWto generate enthusiasm, to initiate some new programs and to continue gardening in our communities across the state. I look forward to working with all of you as we Grow Now . . . Planting the Seeds for Tomorrow.

Meet the President
Judy began her garden club work in 1990. She is a member and former president of the Salisbury GC, an Accredited-Life Flower Show Judge, and served as President of Piedmont District from 2001-2003. She has served VFGC as 1st Vice President, 2nd Vice President, and Treasurer before being installed as President in May 2011. She was awarded the NGC Member of Honor Award for the South Atlantic Region for All-Around Excellence in 2006. Judy served as the webmaster of National Garden Clubs from 2007-2011 and designed the first websites for both VFGC and the South Atlantic Region. She is also a Design Instructor for National Garden Clubs Flower Show School and has exhibited designs in Fine Arts and Flowers at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and numerous flower shows. Judy is a native Virginian from the Shenandoah Valley. She graduated from Bridgewater College with a degree in mathematics and concentration in computer science. She and her husband, Richard, have two married children and one grandchild. She also volunteers at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, including serving as co-chairman for Fine Arts & Flowers in 2007 and 2010.

BLUE GLOVES FOR BLUE STARS

The Blue Star Memorial Program honors service men and women. In 1945, the National Council of State Garden Clubs adopted the program and began a Blue Star Highway system, which covers thousands of miles across the Continental United States, Alaska and Hawaii. Virginia has some of the oldest Blue Star Memorial Markers in the US with the first one dedicated on August 24, 1949. Since 1949, VFGC, districts and clubs have placed over 45 Blue Star Markers along the highways and byways of Virginia as well as at national cemeteries, parks, veterans facilities and gardens. These oldest Blue Star Memorial markers have weathered along the roadsides for over 50 years and now need some TLC. You can help by participating in new program, Blue Gloves for Blue Stars. Plan to attend your district meeting and make a $10 donation to the Blue Star Memorial Fund and receive a pair of blue gardening gloves. Your support of this project will help VFGC refurbish those markers placed before 1960 as well as any others in need of repair. Donate at your district meeting and wear your blue gloves proudly as you help make the Blue Stars in Virginia shine brightly again! Youth Project GRANTS

KEYS TO THE FUTURE YOUTH PROJECT GRANTS

The Keys to the Future Youth Project Grants Program, with a simple application procedure, is sponsored by VFGC for new or existing youth-centered programs. All VFGC clubs are encouraged to apply for a one-year grant up to $1000 for the purpose of helping youth realize the rewards and life lessons from gardens and habitats for becoming good stewards of the earth. The scope of these programs may include benefits to the community, environmental awareness/education, plant-to-food connections, outdoor classroom projects, horticulture education, and the social aspects of gardening.

PROGRAM CRITERIA
In evaluating grant applications, priority will be given to programs that emphasize one or more of these elements: number of youth participating/reached benefits to the community environmental awareness/education horticulture educational focus or curricular/program integration plant-to-food connections social aspects of gardening such as leadership development, team building, community support, or service-learning APPLICATION DEADLINE: SEPTEMBER 15, 2011 Guidelines and application form may be found at www.virginiagardenclubs.org under Youth. CEDAR RUN GC SUPPORTS PLANT CAMP FOR SPECIAL NEEDS WITH YOUTH PROJECT GRANT
Submitted by Pat Bickel, VFGC Youth Project Grants Chairman 2009-2011 Here is one example of the resourcefulness of the various gardening projects implemented by clubs who have received grant funding from the VFGC Youth Grants Committee. As you read about these completed projects, consider starting a similar project for your community. In 2009, the VFGC Youth Project Grants Committee awarded $900 to the Cedar Run Garden Club in Shenandoah District. The funds were allocated to support a Plant Camp for Special Needs students in partnership with Verdun Adventure Bound. The one-week camp was attended by 8 11 year olds who gained experience in all phases of gardening. They learned to identify, collect and preserve seeds for the next season; they weeded and planted cold weather crops in a raised bed; they decorated aprons and flower pots and created collages using plants,

leaves and blossoms; they learned about watering and composting. They made pizzas from scratch using veggies from the garden, harvested potatoes to bake or roast, dyed camp tee-shirts with colors from garden plants and harvested gourds to dry for next years birdhouses. The students thrived in the outdoor setting. Some attended with an aid or a counselor and benefited from the open curriculum and hands-on teaching experiences. Funds were spent on materials used in the various garden and craft themedactivities that focused on the daily curriculum The Seed; The Sun; The Soil; The Water and The Whole. Camp activities and pictures were shared with garden club members to keep them apprised of the wealth of knowledge shared by garden club volunteers and Verdun Adventure Bound instructors.

PLANT, GROW, BLOOM CONVENTION 2011

Garden club members from across the state traveled to Richmond in May 2011 to participate in the annual VFGC Convention. Highlights of the convention were: Design program and workshop by John Klingel (pictured at right) Election of Officers for 2011-2013 Installation of Officers by NGC President, Renee Blaschke Installation Design Tribute, Wonderfully Unique by Julia Clevett Tea at the Governors Mansion Awards Presentation Shoppers Venue Under the leadership of VFGC President Elene Combs, the convention delegates considered the report of the VFGC Special Committee on Conventions and approved the recommendations submitted to hold a biennial convention in the election year and a one day VFGC Meeting in alternate years; that VFGC would host and plan their own conventions and meetings; and that conventions be held in a central location in the state. All interested gardeners are invited to attend landscape design school whose purpose is to develop an appreciation of the environment, both natural and built. The curriculum, in a series of four courses, covers a wide range of subjects: from landscape design history to landscape architecture in the year 2000 and beyond. Since its founding in 1958, professional instructors have maintained the high standards originally incorporated in the study program. Hilliard Park GC Landscapes Habitat for Humanity Houses
Submitted by Jean Fender Under the leadership of Vivian Gulden, our new Habitat for Humanity Landscape Chairman, Hilliard Park GC landscaped two houses in July. The first house located at 3405 Reynolds Road, was landscaped on July 4. The ground was very hard and had to be tilled first. Club members amended the soil and put down landscape cloth before planting one juniper, two Dwarf Burford Hollies, two hostas, one Encore Azalea, one dwarf Crape Myrtle, one mounding Pocomoke Crape Myrtle, three Helleborus foetidus and two begonias. The begonias were in the corners of the landscaped areas on each side of the sidewalk and were accented with large rocks. We not only mulched where we planted but also mulched around two existing large holly trees and on each side of the sidewalk. On the large cement slab in front of the house, we installed a black painted half barrel with a black trellis and Carolina Jessamine. This house was truly transformed after our landscaping. On July 7, the house received a lot of media coverage at its dedication largely due to it being refurbished by Dominion Virginia Power. We presented the new homeowner with a large decorated wreath for her front door and a basket containing small garden tools and other gifts. The next house located at 3607 Ronnie Avenue was landscaped on July 16. This was also a refurbished house with a rail porch and concrete slab extending beyond the porch in front of the driveway. We placed a black painted half barrel with a black trellis and Carolina Jessamine on the concrete slab in front of the large blank wall of the house. On the left side of the concrete slab, we dug up all the grass, amended the soil, put down landscape cloth and planted two Dwarf Burford Hollies and a mounding Pocomoke Crape Myrtle. In the corner of the concrete slab and driveway, we prepared the ground as above and planted a large Encore Azalea with Asiatic lilies in front of it. There were existing dwarf canna lilies in the middle of the front yard which we transplanted to the ditch bank by the road and added orange daylilies and Stella de Oro daylilies on either side. In the hole where we removed the cannas, we planted a maple tree. We also put a decorated pot with an elephant ear plant on the porch on the right side of the front door. In the back yard, we planted a pin oak tree and in the right corner of the privacy fence at the house, we sprayed existing wire grass, put down landscape cloth and planted a Knock Out rose. On the left side of the house where the air conditioner unit sat, we did the same thing and planted a Knock Out rose on each side of the unit. Once everything was planted, we mulched everything except the plants on the ditch bank. The front and back yards both looked wonderful.

Rappahannock GC Blue Star Memorial Highway Marker

Submitted by Aleta Hoffman On Armed Forces Day, May 21, 2011, a Blue Star Memorial Highway Marker was dedicated by the Rappahannock GC at the roadside on Route 3 in Lancaster Court House, VA. In early 2010, the Rappahannock GC voted to place locally a Blue Star Memorial Highway marker. The club started with an anonymous $1,000 donation that was augmented with Club funds in order to purchase the marker. With the help of VA Department of Highways District Roadside Manager, Larry Morris, the club selected a lovely site on Route 3 in the historic village of Lancaster Court House. Next, members of the club met with Delegate Albert Pollard to enlist his support. He enthusiastically endorsed our endeavor and was patron of a bill in the VA General Assembly-- HB 1735, legislation to name the entire length of Route 3 in Lancaster County The Blue Star Highway. Governor McDonnell signed the legislation on March 9, 2011.

Endangered Species Day
Submitted by Sandy Yun Southwest Districts Town and Country GC set in motion a proclamation to sanction May 20, 2011 Endangered Species Day for Wise County. With encouragement from Michelle Mensinger NGC Endangered Species Chairman, the Town and Country GC was instrumental in launching a leadership program to educate the community as well as area schools about the importance of protecting threatened, rare and endangered species. Two of the areas Regional Libraries, Girl Scouts and K-2 Grade School children were involved with hands on projects, local experts in various fields related to the subject were also enlisted to give presentations. A fun time of learning was received and appreciated by all involved. The members of the garden club were actively evolved with this endeavor and truly excited about the keen interest that was stirred as a result of their efforts. New venues are presently being review to enhance the program for this coming year.

Luray GC Memorial Garden
Submitted by Eleanor Ames The Luray GC has enhanced the community over the years through its many projects, one of which is the development of a Memorial Garden. Trees and shrubs have always been planted as a living memorial of club members throughout our town, with club records showing plantings started in the 1960s. When the new Luray Hawksbill Greenway was constructed, the club felt this was the perfect location for a permanent location for a memorial garden. The town agreed and plans moved forward to plan and plant the new area. The Luray Memorial Garden is now located along Rt. 340 North on the Luray Hawksbill Greenway, a convenient and easily accessible location adjacent to the park & ride lot. The garden was first planted with crepe myrtles in 2003. Over the years, flower beds of daffodils and daylilies as well as new trees and shrubs have been planted. In 2010, funds raised with the clubs annual auction enabled the club to purchase a gazebo. A new landscaping plan was developed and the first phase completed. More plantings and a dedication ceremony are planned. The town of Luray helped by arranging for the base for the gazebo, the installation and plantings. Over the years, special memorial ceremonies have been conducted in the garden for recognition and rememberance by the club. In May, the club used the gazebo area as an educational setting to promote club membership during the Hawksbill Greenway Foundations Walk for All Reasons.

Colonial GC 60th Anniversary

Submitted by Brenda Miller On May 18, 1951 interested friends met at the home of Mrs. Wyall Richard. Five days later, the Colonial GC in Winchester was organized with 10 charter members. The object of the club was to stimulate and encourage the knowledge and love of gardening and flower arranging among amateurs. This year all the former and current members of the Colonial GC met for a special luncheon in May at the beautiful Vaucluse Bed &Breakfast in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. A DVD, created from slides dating back to 1951, highlighting many flowers show arrrangements, was shown to members. To celebrate the 60th anniversary , the club has compiled a recipe book to be sold as the years main fundraising project.

Green Meadow Point GC
Submitted by Mary Sue Floyd The Green Meadow Point GC has continued for the 4th year to present Chucky Chipmunk and his Stop Throwing-Start Stowing message to our local youth. We returned to the four-year-old class at the Kinder-Prep at Aldersgate United Methodist Church. We were also invited to bring the message and Chucky to the four-year-old pre-school at Churchland Baptist Church, the kindergarden class at St. Christopther Academy, and the third through fifth grade students during Earth Day celebrations at Western Branch Intermediate School. At each presentation we discuss littering, recycling, reusing, and protecting the environment as well as vocabulary expansion using the meaning of stowing and steward or stewardship.

We take craft supplies for students to complete and take home as a reminder of their activities as well as an age-appropriate workbook. The conclusion of the program with each group is an appearance from Chucky Chipmunk allowing any students to give Chucky a hug or handshake as they wish. This spring this club reached a total of 200 hundred intermediate age youth, 95 pre-school children and 15 kindergarden children, which means over 300 children sharing the message with their families and friends to Stop throwingStart Stowing.

Green Pine GC 70th Anniversary

Submitted by Joan Wedgewood The Green Pine GC of Portsmouth is proud to announce that club member, Karin Fleishman, won 3 of the 4 Design Division Awards at the Tidewater District standard flower show, Special Interest Gardens from Tropical to Desert, held at the Convention Center in Virginia Beach on March 4-6. She received the Award of Design Excellence, the Designers Choice Award and the Table Artistry Award. The garden club also sponsored a Small Standard Flower Show, Spring is in the Air, on April 5 at the Churchland Branch Library. Glenda Knowles was awarded Best-in-Show in the Horticulture Division for her pink camellia. In the Design Division, Best-in-Show was awarded to Bill Smoot. The Green Pine GC celebrated its 70th anniversary with a luncheon at the Cedar Point Country Club in Suffolk on May 10. The occasion also marked a farewell to the outgoing president Charlotte Griffin and a welcome to incoming president Mary Westfall.

Awards Application Changes

Starting this year, many awards will no longer require a book of evidence as we now know it. The application and requirements will be much shorter and in many cases the plastic page covers and report folders will no longer be used. The new application will be limited to just 3 printed pages. No changes have been made to the Book of Evidence required for Flower Show Achievement Awards. These changes should make it easier to apply for awards. Look for complete details in the VFGC Yearbook as well as on the VFGC website.
