1. Demonstrate contextual knowledge in relation to specified styles of music.
This task covers part of Unit 317 Contextualising Music.

Assignment During Term 1 you will examine a number of different styles, periods and genres of contemporary music as well as the performers and key concerts that have influenced popular music culture from the 1950s to the present day. By studying the cultural backdrop, listening to the music of each style or period and through your own further research, you will write an essay critically comparing TWO styles of music taking the opportunity to referencing a variety of examples by relevant artists.

To Achieve a MERIT, the learner must :M.1. Produce a detailed critical comparison of the profiles
of two chosen musical styles, as a result of thorough analysis of similarities or differences in: a. Cultural and historical influences; b. Audience expectations and perceptions; c. Technological developments; d. Media representation.

Step 3 Identify a SECOND contrasting musical style or period that most interests you and identify the artists and performers that have had an influence on that style or period. Step 4 Write a plan for your essay identify key areas of research (musical, cultural, technological) and explain how you will compare these elements of the TWO styles / periods. Step 5 - Write an essay critically comparing the profiles of TWO chosen musical styles analysing similarities or differences in: a. cultural and historical influences; b. audience expectations and perceptions; c. technological developments; d. media representation.

To Achieve a DISTINCTION, the learner must :D.1. Produce a clearly structured, detailed and
insightful critical comparison of the profiles of two chosen musical styles, as a result of exhaustive analysis of similarities or differences in: a. Cultural and historical influences; b. Audience expectations and perceptions; c. Technological developments; d. Media representation.
