Energy Saving Tips

SAVE ENERGY - SAVE MONEY SERVE THE NATION YOU HAVE THE ENERGY - TO SAVE ENERGY & WATER LIGHTING Use natural light. Avoid switching on lights during day time. Enjoy good health. Switch off the lights when not needed or when there is nobody in the room. Replace filament bulbs with 11 /15/18/20 W CFLs for non-study purposes. Save 80% energy. Replace Copper/Aluminum chokes with electronic chokes in phases. Provide 36W slim tube lights of BEE 5 or 4 star rating in place of 40W T12 tube light. Better use 28 W T5 tube light with built in electronic choke. Saves ~ 50% energy over T12 lamp Provide 1 W LED lamp in place of 15 W night bulbs. Act locally & coordinate with your municipality - ensure streetlights dont glow while sun shines; LIFTS Avoid using lift for 1st and 2nd floors and while coming down. Save 5 units/day (Rs.20/ day or Rs.7200/annum). Thus you spend your excess calories. You improve your health also. In twin cities & RR dt. alone, we can save 3 lakh units/day or Rs.12 lakh/day -for 60000 lifts. Fans Switch off the lights when not needed or when there is nobody in the room. Replace resistance type (large) regulators with electronic (small) regulators. Use fans at lower speeds. Refrigerator Keep the refrigerator at least one foot away from the wall. Avoid opening the refrigerator door frequently to avoid loss of cooling. Dont open the refrigerator fully. Dont keep the refrigerator open for long. Keep all dishes etc. ready either for keeping in or for taking out of refrigerator. Set the Thermostat of refrigerator correctly as per the season save energy. Defrost refrigerator regularly and avoid ice buildup. Bring the dishes/contents to room temperature before keeping them in the refrigerator. Washing machine Dry the washed clothes in sun light save power. Use full load. Switch on only after keeping the full load of clothes. Avoid part loading. Front loading washing machines save power, water and detergent. Soak clothes before washing. Dissolve detergent in water before using in washing machine. Air Conditioners Avoid using ACs during winter & monsoon you will enjoy natural light & ventilation. Switch on the AC only if necessary. Switch off the ACs 30 minutes before vacating the room. Regularly clean air filters of ACs. Set the thermostat correctly as per requirement in the season save energy. Use air coolers in stead of ACs. They are energy saving and money saving. Water heaters Take bath one family member immediately after the other you save power. Select a heater with thermostat control; Use solar water heaters. Domestic pumping Use submersible pump in place of jet pump for pumping bore water to overhead tank. Use low friction foot valves in water sumps. Save energy. General Dont use remote for switching off TV, CD players, DVDs & audio - save 7% energy. Use pressure cooker in stead of electric cooker. Dont use simultaneously all the high energy appliances - ACs, heaters & grinders.

Avoid using microwave ovens. Research shows they lead to DNA changes in food stuff.

Vehicles Drive between 45-55 km/hour. You get up to 40% extra mileage. Save up to 6% by tuning your vehicle regularly. Use of bi-metallic spark plugs saves over 1.5% fuel and reduces exhaust emissions too. When you stop your vehicle, stop engine. Switch off the engine at stops of over 2 minutes. Drive in the correct gear. Incorrect gear shifting leads to up to 20% higher fuel consumption. Adopt good Braking habits. Anticipate stops. Stop-and-go driving wastes fuel. Keep your hand/foot off the clutch. Use clutch only when you change gears. Save fuel. Air filter prevents dust from fouling the engine. Use recommended grade of engine oil. Under inflated tyres increase rolling resistance and lead to higher fuel consumption. Plan your route. Rush hour, or stop-and-go traffic, can waste fuel excessively. Reduce loads. Unnecessary loads increase fuel consumption. Vehicles with four stroke engines have better efficiency. Save fuel. Share your car for car-pools. Take your friends along with you and you can share the costs. Plan Your Trips. Before you start on a trip, ask yourself two questions: Is this trip really essential? Can I combine this trip with other trips in the same direction? Use cycle for short distances. Use electric bikes. Save fuel, preserve environment & health. Use public transport as far as possible. It is Safe, Cheap, Environment friendly. Benefits of saving Energy Saving one unit of energy per day means 30 units per month or up to Rs.150 per month. If you save one unit at your end about 2 units need not be produced at generating station. If 2 units are generated at thermal station-1 kg coal is consumed- about 2 kg CO2 is emitted. CO2 emissions result in global warming, climate changes, sea level rises and suffering to people living in coastal areas directly and in other areas indirectly through drought/floods. The energy saved can be utilized for irrigation - illuminating thousands of villages in tribal/ rural areas & in industries - improved quality of life for common people improved GNP.
