11th September 2011 Minutes from INSET meeting 8th September 2011 and ACTION POINTS for all departments areas involved. In attendance: HL, KF, CL, MY, MO, NA, DT Apologies: none Brief overview of the tenure of the minutes DAVID TAYLOR Discussed in brief his role and what he is able to do for us within school. Many were enthusiastic about the possibility of some training on specific software packages as well as departments availing themselves of his design services. WHOLE SCHOOL PRIORITIES Discussed with the main foci being SEN, OUTSTANDING TEACHING CL mentioned importance of relationships with students and building confidence. MY and KF agreed and added the importance of knowing their abilities and limitations and finding appropriate strategies to help. All teacher MONITORING (19th-20th September) Was discussed and it was mentioned that it would serve as a dry run for DUCK in some respects. Comment was made about all staff having been observed during the last 3 weeks of last term and that perhaps this was too soon. ACTION POINT 1. All classes for 19th and 20th need to be planned as they would be no detailed lesson plans on proforma are required but may be done if staff so desire. Planning inn planners, on powerpoint etc also perfectly acceptable. PROFILES Profiles for each class were discussed in detail and looked at by all staff, proformas on paper given and it was also clarified that these profiles were to be a work in progress not a finished article. The additional administrative work created by the profiles was discussed but all agreed that they could be

valuable and acknowledged that this was a whole school thing which required consistency. ACTION POINTS 2. Profiles for each class taught by teachers in faculty must be completed for the 19th/20th using data on SIMS and may be imput either typed or handwritten as working documents to be used. 3. Seating plans for all classes to be appended and ICT to consider how students are seated on computers (as well as desks) to cater for mixed ability teaching. SEN Nature of SEN focus discussed and strategies used by teachers in faculty. A huge and clearly well thought through range of strategies being employed but with some areas for further development. Role of TA discussed and implausibility of allocated TA being shared across 2 faculties when only part time anyway. Issue raised with HU and LE. ACTION POINTS 4. ICT to begin recruiting of suitable year 13 students as Mentors to work in KS3 and KS4 classes. (time scale to be confirmed) 5. Business to consider similar system using BTEC National students to assist in BTEC 1st and GCSE classes. (time scale to be confirmed) 6. Media also planning to use the same system with year 13 Media students in GCSE year 10 and 11 classes especially to help with technical skilling TEACHING AND LEARNING SATISFACTORY AND GOOD TO OUTSTANDING Explorative and animated discussion of what makes for OUTSTANDING teaching and importance of the FOCUS being on the STUDENTS PROGRESS not on the TEACHERS PERFORMANCE. All departments issued with OFSTED criteria for OUTSTANDING lessons All departments offered examples of good practice during the discussion without formal presentations. Broad agreement about need for ENTHUSIASM and importance of being able to show progress for all students. How this can be achieved and shown easily also discussed including a traffic light system for plenaries. ACTION POINTS 7. Look into suitable TRAFFIC LIGHT systems for use in all faculty classes (coloured cups, coloured cards in journals?, coloured areas of

the classroom etc.) all departments to be prepared to demonstrate by next FACULTY meeting. 8. Department Heads to work with department staff on ensuring that lessons are leaner progress focussed and can demonstrate this. 9. Department Heads to work on maintaining and developing the exciting and innovative side to teaching in their departments in collaboration with the faculty head. EXAMS ANALYSIS AND DIP MY demonstrated how data would be supplied to all departments and could be used in exams analysis meaning that Dep Heads role is to interpret data and explore analysis. All agreed that they would work closely with the proforma provided for GCSE, A Level and BTEC and MY agreed that she would imput the data to make this easy. DIPS as per usual should reflect some of the analysis from exams and also focus on the PM for the staff in Dep as well as whole school priorities. HL
