Dear All: I have put together here the meaning of a few of the simple namas from Lalitha Sahastranamam. Let us start with an interesting conversation between King Janaka and the sage Yajnavalkya which may be found at the link given below. http://www.indiadivine.org/audarya/shakti-sadhana/93020-lalitasahasranama-shaktopanishad.html King Janaka asks Yajnavalkya " What light does a man require in order to be able to live in this world ?"

Yajnavalkya answers "Any child would know that answer. Man is able to live and work because of the light of the sun." Janaka then asks "What happens when the sun sets or when there is no light emanating from the moon and stars?" Yajnavalkya answers, "Then one lives by Atmajyoti (the light of the Self )" Janaka asks again, "How to recognise that light ?" Yajnavalkya answers "Every one walks on Mother Earth in which lie buried precious gems, minerals, etc, only one who makes a study, (a serious seeker), would be able to find them. Similarly, in order to find the light of the Self one requires a Sadguru (a true Master.) ! But, those who do not have a formal 'guru' can derive courage from the fact that 'till that time the physical guru arrives Shree Lalita Herself takes the place of the guru! In Shree Lalita Sahasaransama, Shree Lalita Herself is described as a form of GURU! In verse 121, She is referred to as Gurumoothi AND She is called Guru DAKSHINAMURTHI AS WELL!! (verse 140).

Now we shall take a few names from the lalitA sahasra-nAma. LalitA, the Mother Goddess, is dear to devotees because of their devotion, so She is bhakti-priyA. She is also bhakti-gamyA, because she is attainable through bhakti alone. She is bayApahA since She removes all fears. She is bhakti-vaSyA, since She is bound (i.e., She can be conquered and brought into their control by Her devotees) by bhakti. She is niranjanA, faultless; nirlepA, attachmentless; nirmalA, blemishless; nityA, permanent; nirAkArA, formless; nirAkulA, delusionless and therefore not reachable by those who are deluded. She is nirbhavA, one without birth and death, and for this very reason, She is bhava-nASinI, one who destroys the disease of birth and death. To understand the profound significance of many of these epithets of the Almighty, one has to get acquainted with the deeper parts of Hinduism, namely the wisdom taught by the Upanishads. She is antar-mukha-samArAdhyA, one who is to be worshipped by turning inward. She is bahir-mukha-sudurlabhA, unattainable, if you search for Her outside. She is devoid of name and form, so nAma-rUpa-vivarjitA. She is pleased by the recitation of Her names, so nAma-pArAyaNaprItA. She is the One Person to be known by all the vedas, therefore vedavedyA. She is the original source of the vedas, therefore veda-jananI.

She is the one who is pointed out by the word 'that' in all the scriptures, so She is tat-pada-lakshyArthA. She is the original Energy that first sprouted from the formless brahman, therefore, Adi-Sakti. She is immeasurable, either by the senses or the mind, therefore, ameyA.

Very sincerely
