PROJECT COURSEWORK
COURSE : MTE 3111 Teaching of Geometry, Measurement and Data Handling DATE OF COMMENCEMENT : 3 September 2010 DATE OF COMPELETION : 5 October 2010

This coursework is part of the process to optimize the development of competency to teach mathematics to complement your lectures and ISL. You are expected to acquire, master and practice meaningful activities and resources to help you learn how to measurement. You are also to expected to exhibit thoughtful and reflective learning through the activities incorporated in this project. The activities designed in this coursework are intended to complement the learning experience in the on-going lectures, tutorials and practical and ISL work as well as a means to evaluate the accomplishment of the course learning as specified in the Course Proforma. The implementation of this project coursework is structured for you to construct knowledge by progressing through three stages of: (a) (b) (c) acquisition of knowledge, mastery of knowledge, and transfer of elarning.

Throughout this coursework you are expected to carry out discussions with your coursemates and lectures, reflect on your work, and strive towards improving yourself personally and professionally. In this coursework, activities are to be carried out in group / or individual work as specified by your lecturer. You have to submit a complete portfolio for this project. The assessment will be based on the criteria as specified in the Marking Scheme. Materials and references from books and websites, proof of collaboration and discussions, and reflections should be compiled in the portfolio. The arrangement of the portfolio should show the construction and development of knowledge regarding the task(s) specified.

PROJECT COURSEWORK
Prospective teachers of mathematics need exposure, practice and training to produce and use materials and activities that are meaningful to teaching of primary school mathematics. As future mathematics teachers you must be equipped with adequate understanding of the materials, activities, assessment tasks etc related to the teaching of measurement in primary school. To help you to do this, you are required to carry out some coursework tasks that will complement the on-going lectures. In this coursework, you are expected to assess and evaluate resources critically, carry out discussions cooperatively, and think mathematically and professionally in order that your coursework will meet the necessary requirements. Specifically, in this coursework you are required to : 1. Gather information and materials related to the teaching of Geometry, Measurement and Data Handling involving (a) area (b) mass (c) 3D shapes (d) time and (e) data handling. Your materials should focus on the teaching and learning activities and aids that provide information on how to teach these topics in primary schools. You should gather information from a diversity of sources. Your college library and internet are rich resources for you to obtain relevant information. However as undergraduates you are expected to be resourceful and learn to search for information successfully. Once you have gathered the necessary materials, you are required to understand the information thoroughly.subsequently, you are to perform this task. Suggest one activity each to teach the following : (i) concept of area and finding area using non-standard units, (ii) finding the area using formula A = L x B, (iii) compare the masses of two objects using standard units, (iv) conversion of units of mass, (v) build 3D Shapes, (vi) understand the volume for cubes and cuboids, (vii) understand, read and write time in hours and minutes according to 12 hours system, (viii ) use and apply knowledge of time to find the duration, (ix ) collect and organize data (x) organize and interpret data from tables and charts Describe each activity in at least a one-page report with illustrations and diagrams. Your description of activity must be clear and complete. 2. master your understanding by making suitable teaching models and aids to carry out micro/macro teaching sessions with your friends on two topics chosen from ( i ) to ( x ) stated in (1). Conduct one of the two lessons in the actual classroom during your practical teaching. For each teaching session, you are to record the sessions and show them to your coursemates and gather useful feedback about your teaching. Based on the feedback and self reflection, write a one page reflection on the teaching aids made and the activity used.

3. prepare two complete lesson plan based on the micro/macro-teaching teaching carried out in (2). Your lessn plan should include all assessment tasks ( worksheets ) and activity sheets. 4. write a final individual reflection of at least 2 pages on what you have learned and discovered about yourself, your mathematical knowledge and your knowledge as future mathematics teacher upon completion of this coursework.
