2. INTRODUCCIN

This course aims to develop a culture of research through the production of a research paper on various subjects. After we explore the parts of a research paper, from determining the topic to composing a conclusion, we will apply this knowledge in four areas of academic study (the natural sciences, the precise sciences, social sciences and literature).
3. OBJETIVOS DEL CURSO

This course aims to develop a culture of research through the production of a research a paper on various subjects. By the end of this course the students will be able to : a) Formulate a research problem b) Plan the structure of the paper c) Evaluate sources of information d) Select and organize information e) Prepare a bibliography f) Conduct interviews and/ or surveys g) Understand and apply MLA rules to avoid plagiarism h) Write the paper with an accurate use of the English language

5. METODOLOGA DE TRABAJO Y DE ESTUDIO

The students will produce a research paper in English. They will choose their research subject from a variety of topics. Throughout the year, the students will learn how to structure a research paper. We will explain each one of its parts through practical exercises and clarify concepts. Correction activities will be conducted individually and in groups. As sources of information the students can use books, Internet documents, videos, surveys and interviews. All sources must be reliable and duly recorded in the bibliography.
6. SISTEMA DE EVALUACIN

Homework, when written, must be turned in at the beginning of the class on the day in which it is due. Failure to turn homework in on time will result in a grade of zero. In that case, the student should complete the homework for the following day. The grade of the completed homework will be averaged with the initial zero. Homework should be done carefully and completely. If a student fails to achieve a grade of 14 on an assignment s/he must repeat it. The two grades will be averaged. Class Participation: Students should participate actively and constructively in class. That includes not only contributing appropriately to class discussions and asking questions but also working effectively in groups and alone. The class participation grade will be a combination of graded in-class work and the instructors daily assessment of the students participation. The partial grade will be calculated according to the following percentages: Class Participation Homework, Class work, Other Assignments Submission of a section(s) of the thesis paper

NORMAS OPERATIVAS Y DISCIPLINARIAS PARA UN ADECUADO DESARROLLO DEL CURSO

In order for the class to function effectively, certain rules and behavioral norms must be respected: -Be in class on time and ready to learn. If coming from another classroom, students have 1 minute to be in class and ready with their materials. After recesses, students must be in class and ready by the time the second bell rings. 2

Students arriving late without a written justification must go see the inspector and will receive a participation grade of zero if their tardy cannot be justified. -Concentrate on work for this class. Work being done for another class will be confiscated by the teacher. -Do your own work. Copying and plagiarism are serious offenses. They will be met with a grade of zero, and students will be required to repeat the assignment. Absences: If a student is absent from class for any reason, it is his/her responsibility to speak to the teacher as soon as s/he gets back. Starting from the first day back in class, the student will have two days to turn in any assignments. If they are not turned in by this date, they will become unaccomplished homework assignments. Homework: Homework assignments will be turned in upon teachers request in class. Any homework that is not turned in at that moment will be considered unaccomplished. An unaccomplished homework assignment can be turned in until the next days class, but it will be given half credit. Otherwise, it will be a zero. -Maintain standards of cleanliness and personal appearance. -Treat your classmates and teacher respectfully. In particular, in a group setting, do not talk while someone else (whether your teacher or a classmate) has the floor. -The use of ALL electronic devices are not permitted in class. The teacher will confiscate any devices if a student is using them in class Students may not eat, drink (except water), or chew gum in class.
