Susan Tully Our speaker this month has been a guest on Fox News with Brit Hume, Fox & Friends, CNN with Lou Dobbs, Geraldo Rivera, Dan Rather and 100s Talk Radio. She is a former business owner, manager for municipal code enforcement, immigration coordinator for the Coalition of Government O cials (southern California), and president of Citizens Committee for Immigration Policy. She'll be taking about the state of immigration - legal and illegal - in America today. As the National Field Director of FAIR (Federation for American Immigration Reform) Susan works to educate the media and public on immigration issues. It's a hot topic, and an emotional issue... Illegal immigration a ects all of us in California, and the US. We spend $113 billion a year on illegals in the US and $1,200 a year per household. (Learn more at www.fairus.org) Susan is a very popular (and controversial) speaker youll want to make your reservation today!

Read recently about the Pikes Peak cog railway train that takes visitors to 14,110 feet. As it starts its descent, I can just imagine the passengers wondering what would happen if the train's brakes failed. It is probably the same feeling I get when I think of the rapid descent of our country as it seems like a train wreck ready to happen. America seems to be speeding unchecked toward unprecedented disaster that threatens its freedom-loving citizens. The guide aboard the Pikes Peak railway o ers assurance that the brakes are checked often and, should the unthinkable happen, there are two very large springs at the end of the tracks that will stop the train. As those passengers trust the words of the guide, we too can choose not to participate in a doom and gloom atmosphere that surrounds so many conversations. Let us remember that as long as God reigns, let us choose to trust Him to keep the world and our lives on track.

Chaplains Report

The avor of the month is Less Government!! We see that from each debate as well as more states voting to protect citizens on immigration issues and standing up for the Constitution and our people. Our neighbors, the Berkeley College Republicans, with the Cupcake Sale truly displayed government policy accurately! As our intellectual friend and advocate, Laura Ingraham states, silence has become the enemy of our culture! It is no longer possible to stay quiet as we all see the nation spiraling downward. This administration is placing doom on our doorsteps which we must sweep back to our elected o cials desks! The details recently brought to view have put a dent the shiny exterior of the President, if you pay attention to polls, conversations, and less jingle in your pockets. Meanwhile, our club had a revved event with our vibrant, bright and humorous speaker, Eric Golub from L.A. and we will continue to invigorate this month! Your donations, Angel gifts, every new member-match, newsletter sponsorships, and the generous ways and means tickets purchases have given us the funds to do these special projects here locally and more! You are awesome! Likewise, Septembers Annual Picnic, sponsored by both the Humboldt County Republican Central Committee and our club brought many new faces and familiar friends for an exciting afternoon. I thank all those who helped from CC and HRWF; you really have my sincere gratitude! Peter Hannaford, unable to attend, initiated the program, speakers and advertising. David Crane made the introductions. They included Karen Brooks, 2010 1st Assembly District candidate and Humboldt residents Rex Bohn and Annette DeModena - both candidates for 1st Supervisorial District come 2012, and Charles Giannini, candidate for the Fortuna Board of Education and a member of the Republican Central Committee. Our donations of prizes gathered were famously decorated and displayed by our Ways and Means Chair, Linda Arata. Jean Giannini and Gwen Morris added their are to ticket sales with Linda. Jean also amazed us with a donation of 4 fabric bags, which, along with Margaret Sta ords gorgeous pie were all auctioned by Rex Bohn. A collection of cooks were George & Linda Benzel, Sam Trumbull, and Steve & Regina Payne ~ performing to rave reviews! Terry Roberts & Gary Frank made generous donations to our supply of beef, dogs and buns and elbow grease and time, plus assisting guests with a smile. Thanks go to Barbara Hecathorn, Jim Pell, Todd Walker, Tom Sta ord, Colleen Hedrick, Sheryl Fearrien, Helen Edwards & Michael Rhodes, Jeanne ONeale, Charlie & Jean Giannini, Carol Del Biaggio, Delores Theuerkauf, Julie Crane, and Rose Welsh, with her beautiful banner design and donation. My extra special thanks go to Gwen Morris and Margaret Sta ord, performing miracles prior to and during the picnic! The sensational salads and desserts everyone shared over owed our bu et tables and delighted our palettes! And, among the guests we may have had many other helping hands. It would be no surprise to me, so thank you one and all! Think ahead for next year, 2012 will be a rockin event indeed!

Presidents Message

Oct. 10 is the 100th Anniversary of Woman's Su rage in California 10-10-1911

Happy October, everyone! Yes, fall is breaking out everywhere and, with it, the campaign for our next president is heating up as our Indian summer does the same. I am very HOPEful for real CHANGE come November 2012! We have a terri c lineup and any one of the candidates would be a great improvement over the incompetent community organizer who plays golf and takes expensive vacations on our dime, but has no real clue what to do about anything. Take heart; we must endure for sixteen more months, then well install a REAL president in the White House. We all have our favorite or favorites. I am leaning toward Newt and Herman Cain, two sensible, bright, brainy guys who, separately or together, could put us back on the right track. How can we make certain a Republican is our next chief executive? Keep on doing what we are doing. Something that could also help is what Herman Cain said the other day in an interview. He said he has been encouraged to continue to be positive instead of bashing his other Republican contenders. He said people compliment him for doing this. Maybe we should keep our Obama-bashing behind closed doors and talk openly about the attributes of our favorite Republican candidates. I know if I had supported Obama in the last election (that would never happen in this lifetime or the next!), I would not appreciate hearing how stupid I had been and being blamed (rightly so) for the mess the Big O has made of our country and economy! There is enough self-in ected butt-kicking going on already. We just need to give them some better options. So the next time Election 2012 comes up in conversation, just talk about the high points of your favorite candidate and why you are supporting him or her!

Education Report

Our State legislators can't seem to stop writing bills. Maybe a part-time legislature would be more bene cial. Here is an example of what they are doing in Sacramento. AB39 (Ammiano-D San Francisco) Pupil Rights: Bullying Passed Assembly 52-26 Passed Senate 24-14 AB9 (Swanson-D Oakland) Human Tra cking: Minors Passed Assembly 79-0 Passed Senate 32-0 AB443 (Lowenthal-D Long Beach) Transgender Birth Certi cates Passed Assembly 52-22 Passed Senate 23-13 Can't blame the Governor for complaining about the sheer number of bills that appear on his desk, but he still signs the vast majority. As of this writing, he has signed 145 and Vetoed 14 with 400 more to go. ####

State Legislation Report

Update:
Governor Jerry Brown vetoed Senate Bill 676, (Leno, D-San Francisco) - SB676 would have created an eight-year, pilot program for the cultivation of industrial hemp in Imperial, Kern, Kings and San Joaquin counties. Brown also vetoed Assembly Bill 568, (Skinner, D-Berkeley), which would have prohibited prison guards from shackling pregnant inmates unless necessary. "At rst blush, I was inclined to sign this bill because it certainly seems inappropriate to shackle a pregnant inmate unless absolutely necessary," Brown said in a veto message. "However, the language of this measure goes too far, prohibiting not only shackling, but also the use of handcu s or restraints of any kind except under ill-de ned circumstances." Brown Vetoed SB 914 - Bill relating to searching Cell Phones incident to arrest Brown signed a bill prohibiting anyone under the age of 18 from using ultraviolet tanning devices (tanning beds). The trip was a great success---from the waving ags that greeted everyone as we approached the airport on Tuesday morning to the incredible welcome home, and everything in between. Since we had chartered the jet it was a quick trip, but the amount of love, respect and attention that the vets received made up for that. The 51 guardians were capable, dedicated and caring, and needless to say, the vets had a wonderful time. Many thanks to all of you for making this possible for the 97 WWII Veterans who were able to be with us. I think most of us who were on the trip are still in a daze, but it's a happy, lovely state to be in and we can't stop smiling. Several of the vets told us it was the highlight of their lives. We are looking toward another ight in spring so please don't forget about Honor Flight. If any of you are interested in having fundraisers, I know lots of the vets would be very happy to come and share their experiences. (Gerry has this down pat and I'm sure would be happy to give you some pointers.) Not only will it raise money for this cause, it gives people an opportunity to hear the veterans stories, learn about them and get a rsthand glimpse of this part of our history. Probably most importantly, it continues to honor the veterans and lets them know that even though the Flight is over, our love and respect for them continues. Contributions can be sent to North Coast Honor Flight, 710 E Street, Eureka, CA 95501. Please call Kathrin for more information---677-0490.

Honor Flight Update

Taken during our ceremony at the Memorial. Steve Justus said a few words, then read the Memorial Honor Roll---names of those who had passed away either in the war or afterwards. The vets then added the names of relatives or loved ones. It was very moving.

An email from a fellow Republican woman made me aware of the ticking clock. Did you know that the school board and special district elections are this November? I didn't. I thought they would be the following November when we will be voting on some of our supervisors, assembly candidate, and, of course, the big presidential election in 2012. Did you know there are 15 declared GOP candidates? We have a super committee working undercover and if they don't come to a consensus, then a "trigger mechanism" kicks in that would enact $1.2 trillion in automatic cuts. These cuts are to be split between national security and domestic programs with the biggest entitlement programs being excluded. I like Newt's take on this, he thinks this is the dumbest idea. He also believes it is irrational to believe these twelve brilliant people are going to come up with a brilliant idea to cut a trillion dollars or force us to choose between gutting our military or accepting a tax increase. This committee needs to be stopped and this needs to go back to the full Congress and every subcommittee needs to nd savings and it should be done in an open forum. On the local level, you need to know who is running for local boards and get behind your candidate to get them elected. I know I will be spending time in Fortuna, walking and planning events to get my brother-in-law elected to the Fortuna High School Board.

Herman Cain Wins Near-Majority (48.9%) in Presidential Straw Poll of National Federation of Republican Women
His win prompted this observation on a blog: Supporters of other candidates are now beginning to disparage straw polls. That's fair, but this straw poll was a little di erent. Just keep in mind that while straw polls are not elections, the emergence of Cain is unique. In order to vote in the Republican Womens poll you had to be a delegate to their convention, unlike straw polls that can bus supporters in. Second, unlike Ron Paul, Cain does not represent a movement like the Libertarians who form voting blocs and can e ectively overwhelm straw polls that make Paul look more popular than he is. Third, it takes more than a 75 cent taco to go to the Republican Womens Convention is Kansas City (take it from me). Women have own in from all parts of the country at signi cant expense to be there. Straw polls are not elections, but Cain gave an electrifying, persuasive speech to a cross section of active Republican women and got an overwhelming endorsement. And, a nal point, Republican women make up a lot of the worker bees during an election, passing out literature, going door to door, manning the polls. Thats why elected Republican o cials pay them a lot of attention. Republican women did not to go to Kansas City to give Herman Cain a win in the straw poll. The fact that he won big was solely due to his ability to convince the delegates that he was the one they wanted for President. Thats big."

The Latest POLLS:

The latest Zogby poll has Herman Cain leading the Republican

eld, topping former front-runner Mitt Romney by an astonishing 20 points. Cain would also narrowly edge out Obama in a general election, the poll found, by a 46/44 margin. If the election were held now between President Obama and Mitt Romney, Romney would win, according to a Quinnipiac University opinion poll. ANY REPUBLICAN 47% OBAMA 41% - Rasmussen Four in 10 Americans strongly disapprove of how Obama is handling the job of president in Washington Post-ABC News poll. CBS poll shows 69% believe Obama has not signi cantly helped the economy. Just 37% of people in a new ABC News/Washington Post poll say they expect Obama to win re-election: 55% instead expect the eventual Republican nominee to win. Nearly half of Democrats say they are not exactly excited about voting in the upcoming 2012 elections.
