Welcome to Oamaru and the Waitaki District. Our annual Victorian celebrations are one of New Zealands top heritage events. They are an opportunity to have fun, dress Victorian, participate in race day, join the grand parade or Victorian ball, go to the garden party, or just soak up the atmosphere - an opportunity to celebrate the past and present. Our district has a rich heritage of fine Oamaru stone buildings forming an authentic backdrop to the yearly festivities. These include the Opera House, Museum, Gallery and all the historic buildings in Harbour Street the Southern Hemispheres largest time capsule! Our extended area includes the mighty Waitaki River framed in rolling landscapes and dotted with holiday homes. The panorama of our district is huge - lakes, Elephant Rocks, Macraes gold mine, Moeraki Boulders, farmlands and the mountains. The arts flourish and we value a healthy environment, independence and sustainability. Early settlers such as Sir John McKenzie, Thomas Brydone, and Sir Arnold Nordmeyer not only set foundation stones for our district, they were leaders for our nation and the world. I thank everyone who has taken time to stage an event, and all who come from far and wide to participate. These celebrations acknowledge our heritage and the attractions of Oamaru and the Waitaki District. They are something we should all be proud of. Breakfast: The saga of the Edwin Fox The old East Indiaman ship on display in dry dock near the Picton ferry terminal. Built in India in 1853, this ships colourful history includes carrying troops to Crimea, convicts to Australia, and immigrants to New Zealand in the 1870s. Captain Johnson was accused of immorality with a female passenger during a ferocious storm in the Bay of Biscay in 1873. In the 1880s the ship was dismasted and served as a refrigerator hulk at Port Chalmers, freezing mutton sent by rail from the Totara Station. She was salvaged as a rotting hulk in Shakespeare Bay in the 1980s before being taken to her current resting place. The talk will be illustrated with paintings and photos of the ship in her various incarnations.
