19 Christopher Street 347-982-4382

Stepping away from the din of Christopher
Street and into the dignifed showroom of
Doyle Mueser, its easy to imagine youve been
magically transported to Savile Row. The
dandy behind the counter introduces himself
as Jake Mueser, who, together with partner
Amber Doyle, has grown the bespoke clothing
line from an operation in Mr. Muesers Brook-
lyn apartment to one that created the stylish
menswear featured in AMCs The Trivial Life
of Arthur Banks and will be doing the same
for Billy Crudup, Olivia Wilde and Jason
Bateman on director Peter Glanzs next flm,
The Longest Week. Its clear that Mr. Mueser
has a passion for his workas he shows of the
fabric swatches for autumn suiting, words
like wool and cashmere are uttered with
the same enthusiasm most people reserve for,
say, a phrase like dream home. The atten-
tion to detail is evident everywhere, from the
meticulously spaced neckties displayed on
the stores dark wood shelves to the bespoke

You can feel good about a shopping spree
at this recently opened, Nordstrom-owned
store: the concept, hatched by Vogue E.I.C.
Anna Wintour and New York Public Library
chairman Catie Marron, sees 100 percent
of profts from purchases go to beneft local
childrens charities. The airy, two-level space
in Soho feels well edited, yet manages to ofer
something for everyone. Luxurious home
goods like Pehuns hand-made Patagonian
blankets and cases of sparkling accessories
from designers including Katie Rowland and
Mawi London beckon from the frst foor,
while upstairs ofers rows of apparel from
local designers as well as international cult

than 150 vendors from across the globe, many
of which you wont fnd elsewhere in the U.S.

Fenton

Its hard not to make a statement in designer
Dana Lorenzs showstopping pieces from lux-
ury jewelry line Fenton. A trained painter, Ms.
Lorenz earned her fashion chops at Gucci and
Donna Karan before striking out on her own
in 2006. The C.F.D.A.-nominated designer has
since created a second, lower-priced difusion
line, Fallon, and capsule collections for retail-
ers like J.Crew and Opening Ceremony. Fans
include Michelle Obama, Leighton Meester
and Shalom Harlow, as well as designers
Proenza Schouler and Thakoon, with whom
shes collaborated for runway. Fentons darkly
glamorous autumn/winter collection, aptly
named Midnight in Versailles, was inspired
by the ornate details of the palaces interiors
(think crystal chandeliers and gilt lion-footed
tables). Our favorite piece: the conversation-
starting gold Antler cuf (right).

This year, Autoban also celebrates the launch
of its latest furniture store, the Autoban
Gallery in the Akaretler Row Houses. Once
a planned community for workers in a

Autumn in Istanbul just got a little more
stylish. Autoban, the rock-star powerhouse of
Turkish interior design, has opened the doors
of its newest boutique property, the 23-room

bohemian modern sensibility and boasts
showstopping views of the Bosphorus Bridge
at night. Perched on the edge of the water in
the swank urban hamlet of Ortakoy, the space
is a haven for the citys jeunesse dore, who

Con Dao, a speck of an island located of the
southern coast of Vietnam, is remote, covered
in impenetrable jungle and surrounded by
rough, azure seas. Those in the know prefer
it that way. Once reached only by an arduous
ferry crossing, the island is now serviced by
daily fights from Ho Chi Minh City, drawing
adventuresome travelers in search of brag-
ging rights. As they careen along the islands
clif-hugging roads by motorbike, they catch
only glimpses of its tragic past as Vietnams
Alcatraz. The crumbling state prisons are
now museums, the dragon fruit is sweet, and
the beaches are empty. Luxury seekers stay
at the new Six Senses Con Dao, where history
seems quite distant thanks to the soporifc
efects of its minimalist private villas with
oceanfront plunge pools.

tions with seafood from far-of locales? Is
this really authentic Peruvian? Is the former
Tabla space, which the restaurant occupies,
still haunted by Danny Meyers sole misfre
despite a thorough, teal-centric redesign by
architect Stephanie Goto? Do unique but
gimmicky dcor touches like a texture wall
festooned with 8,000 individually pinned
Peruvian corn kernels highlight or conceal
the restaurants ber-chain roots, in a city
that prefers to launch culinary empires, not be
invaded by them several years in?
As with many things, such questions are
best answered at the barpreferably on a
company credit card. With a cocktail menu
of seven Pisco oferings, lead bartender Saul
Ranella is intent on bringing Perus national
spirita grape brandy that dates back to the
16th centuryto the mixology masses.
An aperitif called the Tres Amigos com-
bines La Diablada Pisco with Campari and
Carpano Antica. Its essentially a welcome
improvement upon the Negroni, with the
Pisco subbing in for gin, the Campari taken
down a notch and the vermouth upgraded. Its
a promising, boozy start, perfect for soothing
any anxiety that may arise from perusing the
menus many, varied oferings.
Theres a lot of diferent ways to approach
it, says the restaurants executive chef,
Victoriano Lopez, Mr. Acurios right-hand-
man who came over from Peru to the run the
kitchen. Mr. Lopez recommends that new-
comers begin with a straightforward cebiche
and a Pisco sour, but, frst, Mr. Ranella insists
on a sauced-up pit stop.
The Chilcano, he explains, is the gin and
tonic of Perueven more popular than the
Pisco sour, as he mixes up the crisp combina-
tion of Pisco, key lime juice, ginger syrup,
ginger beer and Angostura bitters. Cebiche-
wise, the unfortunately named but fortu-
nately favored Elegance a fairly traditional
mix of warm-water fuke, red onions, corn and
yam in a citrus marinadeworks well with the
Chilcanos clean simplicity.
Then its time for the vaunted Pisco sour,
the national drink of Peru, made from
Pisco, whipped raw egg white, lime juice and
simple syrup. Per tradition, Mr. Ranella dots
its frothy top with three drops of bitters,
representing the Father, the Son and the Holy
Ghost. Amen. The Limeo cebiche, with its
upped ante of citrus and spicered snapper,
Spanish day-boat octopus, calamari, scallops
and blue shrimpcuts nicely through the
drinks foamy sweetness.
The cocktails sneak up on you, Mr. Lopez
warns me. Indeed they do. Pisco imported
to the U.S. typically falls between 80 and 85
proof, which goes a long way on a stomach full
of nothing but raw fsh, spices and no solid
carbs, save for the occasional Peruvian corn
kernel or nibble of yam.
My faculties on the wane, I regard Mr.
Ranellas next concoction with apprehen-
sion. The Chicha Tu Ma combines Pisco,
orange liquor, passion fruit and a syrup called
Chicha Morada, which is the color of cheap
red wine and made from purple corn steeped
with fruit and spices. Its a hue easily envi-
sioned splashed across a favorite dress, at the
dry cleaners, with tears. We do recognize
were passing out a liability, says our trusty
bartender.
Such dangers are worthwhile. The Chicha
gives the cocktail a full, complex, fruity body
that, like a good sangria to a paprika-coated
potato bite, holds its own against the menus
aggressively seasoned entres, like a barely
seared yellowfn lightly crusted with a blend
of Peruvian spices and served with a quinoa
preparation that blows that box from Whole
Foods out of the water.
The night is best fnished of on a lighter
note. The Lluvia de los AndresPisco,
Japanese cucumber, basil, limehits it with
ease, and goes well with a dessert of Peruvian
fritters and spiced honey, provided you have
the room. Its likely you will. La Mars drinks
are deceptively strong, and its foods more
favorful than flling. Youre unlikely to leave
feeling bloated or stufed or even fully sati-
ated, all of which could make it an ideal third
spot, especially given that the prices are high
enough to show you care (cebiches $1219;
entres $1934; cocktails $1215).
Serial daters should take note; other diners
might do well to remember that Shake Shack
is just a stumble through the park.

or many, the world of art
collecting seems impossibly
rarefed. A brief trip to some
of New Yorks most esteemed
galleries seems to confrm
those suspicions: with prices
reaching into the hundreds of
thousands of dollars, starched-collar cura-
tors cater only to fur-collared buyers. Until
recently, individuals interested in collecting
serious art on a smaller budget have had seri-
ously limited options. Enter Exhibition A.
Launched last December, Exhibition A is a
collaboration between Laura Martin and art
world heavy-hitters Cynthia Rowley and Bill
Powers. While Ms. Rowley is a reigning queen
in the realm of feminine, haute hippie fashion,
her husband, Mr. Powers, is the co-owner of
Half Gallery, an edgy Lower East Side art space.
Exhibition A, the brainchild of this three-
some, is an online members-only website for
seasoned and rookie collectors alike, selling
limited-edition prints from contemporary
artists.
The goal was to create a space where a broad
range of people, particularly those with smaller
budgets, can own original work from world-
renowned artists. I want to make everyone an
elitist, since that seems to be the chief com-
plaint against the accessibility of contemporary
art; that its too insular or only for the elite, Mr.
Powers professes. With this perhaps lofty aim,
Exhibition A is celebrating 10 months of sell-
out sales and is continuing to pave the way for
those interested in afordable art collecting.
Just as she envisions is the case with many
Exhibition A buyers, Ms. Martin, a slim, glossy
haired brunette, only recently began exploring
contemporary art. Ms. Martins background is
in fashion. I worked for Cynthia Rowley for the
business side of things, she explains. And it
was actually through Cynthia and Bill that I got
a little taste of the contemporary art world and
liked what I saw.
While alluring from afar, the contemporary
art scene can often feel exclusive. I felt like
I couldnt aford anything that I wanted I
wanted to be able to participate in a meaning-
ful way and to own work by these artists that I
was seeing in the galleries, reading about in the

magazines and on blogs, Ms. Martin recalls.
And so, using an initial investment from Ms.
Rowley and Mr. Powerss art world connec-
tions, Exhibition A was born. The site features
limited prints, all under $1,000, from big guns
of the contemporary art scene. Works from
Terence Koh, Nate Lowman, Dasha Shiskin and
Ren Ricard have already been sold through
Exhibition A.
Ms. Rowley and Mr. Powers have used their
star power to promote the project, helping
Exhibition A achieve the notoriety it enjoys to-
day. The websites launch party last December,
held in the Gagosian shop on Madison Avenue,
attracted a bevy of night crawlers, including
Waris Ahluwalia, Andy Spade, Olivier Sarkozy
and James Frey. Several artists whose prints
would later be featured on the site were also in
attendance, Peter Sutherland, Mr. Ricard and
Brad Kahlhamer among them.
While there appears to be an infnite number
of contemporary artists out there, Ms. Martin
seems to have a very particular notion of
precisely whom Exhibition A should showcase.
We want to work with people who are making
an impact on the contemporary art market
today, who we think are cool. If we think some-
body is cool, if we like their art, and you know, if
they are sort of making an impression, we want
them, she says.
By and large, artists have been receptive to
Exhibition As philosophy. Were exposing
them to a new type of customer, by putting their
artwork in front of sort of a younger collector,
Ms. Martin says, explaining why so many big-
name artists have jumped on the Exhibition
A bandwagon. Those are also the collectors
of the future. You have to start somewhere, so
people who are participating in small ways now
are much more likely to participate in bigger
ways later, she adds.
Although the site has been around for less
than a year, Ms. Martin believes Exhibition A is
already reaching a broader array of people than
she had initially anticipated. You know, when
we frst launched I would have said that its for
somebody whos too sophisticated for a poster
but who cannot yet aford fne art, Ms. Martin
says of how she originally envisioned the aver-
age Exhibition A buyer. But as weve grown,
I feel like Ive found out theres a lot of people
who can aford fne art but who are just looking
to complement their established collection,
she says. The unexpected demand from foreign
buyers adds to Ms. Martins optimism. Ive
been so surprised by the international response
that weve received," she reveals. "On average
15 percent of our sales are to international
customers, and I think ... well see that grow
over the next few months.
The Observer wondered if anyone in the fne
art market, either collectors or dealers, had
taken unkindly to Exhibition As increasing
popularity. Some rufed feathers may say,
we ventured, that the prints were in efect of
inconsequential artistic value. You know, we
really havent gotten a lot of negative feedback.
I think what were doing is trying to create these
prints that dont necessarily impede on the
artists primary market, but are still a way to
be able to own signed work by those artists,
Ms. Martin ofers earnestly. I think that the
print market has a pretty strong history of
being something that, you know, is a valid part
of the contemporary art market, she further
explains.
Ms. Martin is optimistic about Exhibition As
future. With a steady demand for prints and a
recent spike in requests for original work, the
project is crafting its own unique identity in
the online art world. Ms. Martin explained that
collectors from all walks of life could beneft
from the prints Exhibition A ofers. Its invest-
ing in your cultural self, she says. Its art thats
relevant.

A
s luxury retailers are
keenly aware, China is on
track to overtake Japan as
the largest luxury-goods
market in the world in
2012. While conglomer-
ates like LVMH and
Gucci have stormed the East in recent years,
experts say the most compelling story is the
new Chinese consumer who is traveling to the
U.S. in pursuit of the latest premium fashion,
beauty and home products.
New York City is by far the number one
shopping destination in the world for Chinese
travelers, before Paris and London, Pierre
Gervois, CEO of China Elite Focus, a Shang-
hai-based marketing agency, has said.
So why fy thousands of miles to shop? After
decades spent living in a closed-of society, the
Chinese have developed an insatiable appetite
for new outlets for their growing wealth.
Reports reveal the United States as Chinese
millionaires preferred country for leisure
travel.
New York City, with its gleaming fagships
and cutting-edge fashion industry, holds a
magnetic appeal for Chinas expanding elite.
A trip spent visiting shopping meccas like
Fifth Avenue and Sohos swishy boutiques has
become an eye-opening lifestyle education
for Chinas newly rich and acquainted them
with top brands. Though clich would have it
that Chinese shoppers are slavishly devoted to
status labels, many are in fact becoming more
sophisticated consumers by the day.
Chinese culture serves to only reinforce
this trend, as traditions dictate that they buy
lavish gifts for family, friends and colleagues
while abroad. According to the 2010 data
released by NYC & Co., 94 percent of Chinese
tourists ranked shopping as their number
one priority while visiting New York, ahead
of sightseeing and fne dining. On the typical
must-buy list: art, antiques, watches, wine,
jewelry, apparel, accessories, beauty products
andfor those with truly deep pockets
multimillion-dollar real estate.
But the Chinese fascination with Western-
style consumption is more than simply an
overcompensation for the material scar-
city that has marked most of the countrys
tumultuous history. Indeed, for centuries,
the Chinese have been drawn to fne objects.
For 500 years, porcelain production from the
imperial kilns in dynastic China boasted one
of the longest-running luxury brands in
world history. A taste for adornment and the
fner things in life is simply an extension of
Chinas artistic legacy.
Even when spending on fashionable or
trend-driven items, the Chinese look for long-
lasting investment pieces of enduring quality.
In this time of economic upheaval, it behooves
businesses to investigate this fast-rising group
of consumers. On page 38, we spotlight young
millionaires spending habits and how theyre
driving Manhattans retail market.

THE BRazil
fOuNdatiON' s
aNNual gala
The fun one must have as a beautiful Brazilian! The
Observer walked up the steps of the New York Public
Library to find a bevy of them in gowns that tickled
the marble floor, men in tuxes taking their arms,
seating assignments in their fingers. It was the Brazil
Foundation Annual Gala, and the countrys glammiest
men and women flew in for the fest. Julie Henderson,
Alessandra Ambrosio, Ana Beatriz Barros and Jessica
Hart all showed their Brazilian spirit too, gracing the
bash with a taste of the runway. And it looks like Italys
an ally: Valentino, still in the city for a few extra days,
came by to say hello. Everyone scrambled downtown
afterward for the now-legendary after-party, held this
year at the brand-new Hotel Americano in Chelsea.
There was enough cachaa to make caipirinhas for
the Brazilian army, and D.J. Rachel Chandler spun
the songs that got the tipsy beauties dancing on the
rooftop for hours. It was quite the boa festa.

What apocalypse? A few minutes after the rapt audience at
Lincoln Centers Alice Tully Hall watched Earth smash into an
enormous neighboring planet, the breathless movie-goers got
to join stars Kirsten Dunst, Alexander Skarsgrd and Charlotte
Gainsbourg at the nearby Stone Rose Lounge for post-Rapture
cocktails and canaps. Yes, Lars von Triers mind-blowing
Melancholia is just a film, but it was still hard to shake the sense
of dread, even after downing a few glasses of red. The party
drew the likes of Mark Cuban, Alan Cumming and Michael Stipe.
We had to wonder: how would the boldfacers spend their final
days? I dont know, man, Ms. Dunst told us. Id hopefully be
with my family. It would be nice to be in the forest somewhere,
chilling out. Its such an awful thing to think about. What would
you do? We looked around the room, at the glamorous scene
and the tray of drinks coming our way. Not a bad option, really!

after-party
In a fitting finale to Fashion Week, Marc Jacobss Spring
2012 runway show filled its final slot. For those not yet
burned out from a week of up-all-night madness, the
Dream Downtowns Gallery at Dream was a sea of
celebs. Marc attracted the likes of Dakota Fanning,
Michael Pitt and an unwelcome but very present
Lindsay Lohan, who snagged a wristband despite
being barred from attending by the bouncers and guards.
Meanwhile, downstairs in Electric Room, another high-
wattage gathering was beginning. The Observer skipped
down the stairs and into the tiny 100-person space to find
Daphne Guinness walking around in her skyscraper heels,
Owen Wilson chatting up Courtney Love and a peppy Ellen
Barkin occupying the center booth. But the main attraction
was Mick Jagger, who had come over from girlfriend LWren
Scotts dinner elsewhere in the hotel. What a crew! You cant

studiO party
With years to go until the Whitneys new Renzo Piano space
in the Meatpacking District opens, theres really only one
thing to do: throw a lot of wild parties in anticipation. The
august museum seems to host another new bash every few
months, each one bigger than the last. On a mild early-
October night, New Yorks art world cognoscenti descended
upon an old hangar on Pier 57 to celebrate New Yorker writer
Calvin Tompkins, who has at one time or another profiled
many of the artists in attendance. Lets hope they were positive!
Things were cordial for a while, but once ?uestlove lodged
himself behind the D.J. booth, things got a little more raw. Stuffed
and sauced, the crowd danced the night away under two massive
disco balls, topping it all off with pomegranate-Champagne
concoctions. The Observer sampled a few of those and in the
course of a few minutes spotted Bar Rafaeli, John Legend,
Amanda Hearst and Michelle Monaghan. No, the Whitney isnt
downtown yet, but as far as its celebrations are concerned, its
already got a few masterpieces under its belt.

lad in head-to-toe black,
Vladimir Restoin Roitfeld
opens the wrought-iron-
and-glass door to his prewar
apartment building just
steps from Fifth Avenue.
I am so sorry that the
elevators are broken, he apologizes in his
husky French accent, as he heads back to the
service elevator, pulling its old-fashioned gate
closed with an insouciant shrug.
His ffth-foor apartment, starkly white
and ferociously tidy, is full of contemporary
art, and little else. A rectangular mirror in
the living room is decked with a metal skull
and a fan of colorful party invitations. A New
Years card from his godfather, the photogra-
pher Mario Testino, is addressed to trs cher
Vlad, giving a small glimpse into Mr. Restoin
Roitfelds privileged, insider status in the
fashion stratosphere.
Three hefty watches, by Chanel, Audemars
Piguet and Patek Philippe, perch carefully
on a side table. A quick peek into his fridge
reveals bottles of Veuve Clicquot and ketchup,
while a stack of airplane sleep masks sits on
the kitchen counter.
Mr. Restoin Roitfeld, 26, has just fown in
from Europe. And while the peripatetic life
and the Upper East Side address might tele-
graph louche playboy, his environment also
suggests that Mr. Restoin Roitfeld is a highly
precise person. On his modern glass desk,
two tidy stacks of euros and dollars and two
credit cards are aligned in a hyperdisciplined
manner.
In his closet, stacks of white, black and
gray clothing are folded exactly. Slim tuxedo
jackets, starched white shirts, precipitously
skinny jeans and supple leather jackets pre-
dominate. Mr. Restoin Roitfeld, taking a page,
perhaps, from Karl Lagerfelds style playbook,
is a man who likes a uniform.
Since his mother, the berstylish Carine
Roitfeld, stepped down as editor-in-chief
of French Vogue last year, shes taken steps
toward becoming a global brand in and of
herself. Her book, Irreverent, a 190-page
visual autobiography stufed with pictures of
her genetically blessed family, was released
by Rizzoli this month. She has gone on to
collaborate with Mr. Lagerfeld and Riccardo
Tisci of Givenchy and has lent her singular
creative direction to Barneys fall windows.
Meanwhile, Mr. Restoin Roitfelds older
sister, Julia, a petite, cat-eyed brunette, has
continued to charm and fascinate Manhat-
tans society press.
Every decade, New York sees the rise of a
new, glamorous, ubiquitous, whispered-about
family. Now, undeniably, is the Age of the
Roitfeld. There is even a website, IWantTo
BeaRoitfeld.com, which chronicles the com-
ings and goings of fashions latest frst family.
But Mr. Restoin Roitfeld is now branching
out on his own, intent on gaining credibility
in New Yorks notoriously fnicky art world.

2008 with business partner Andy Valmorbida,

With his hypnotic green eyes, high cheek-
bones and masculine nose, he has the kind of
Bryonic good looks that are just slightly ob-
scured by his 5 oclock shadow and studiedly
unkempt hipster hair. Its easy to see why the
girls like him.
Born and raised outside of Paris, he moved
to the U.S. at 17 to attend the University of
Southern California in Los Angeles, where
he met his best friend, shipping heir Stavros
Niarchos, dated model Lily Donaldson and
still managed to fnd time to complete a major
in international relations and a double minor
in flm and business.
After graduation, he worked as a P.A.
for one of Paramounts top producers. My
family had always worked in flm and its
what I thought I wanted to do. (Mr. Restoin
Roitfelds maternal great grandfather was the
Russian producer behind the 1954 flm The
Count of Monte Cristo.) At the studio, he read
torturously bad scripts, writing up reports
that were never read and ferrying members
of the crew back and forth on flm sets. To say
the least, it wasnt his thing. I was miserable,
says Mr. Restoin Roitfeld. I had always grown
up around creative people but this was too
political and it was all about the money.
Mr. Restoin Roitfelds next move demon-
strated a wisdom beyond his years. I knew
I didnt have the talent [to become a fashion
designer or an artist], he says simply, but I
wanted to work with creative people.
Mr. Restoin Roitfeld got his start helping
a friend, the Italian artist Marco Perego, put
on a show in the Paris in the summer of 2008.
The pictures sold in less than two hours, and
the work came as a revelation to him.
His frst serious break came when New
York art dealer Rick Librizzi introduced him
and Mr. Valmorbida, the Australian imported
food heir, to artist Richard Hambleton. Ham-
bleton had been one of the bigger names in the
80s. He was a contemporary of Keith Haring,
says Mr. Restoin Roitfeld. But because of his
drug use, basically the guy shot himself in the
foot. He did so many drugs that he was too
crazy for anyone to trust and to want to work
with.
Mr. Valmobida and Mr. Restoin Roitfeld
were persuaded to put on a show, which they
did with backing from Armani during Fashion
Week in Feburary 2010. The duo have since
added Parisian painter Nicolas Pol and a graf-
fti artist named RETNA (who developed his
own language of hieroglyphics. With Feed-
back Ltd., Mr. Pol painted the tail of a private
jet for a VistaJet sponsored worldtour).
In February, the burgeoning company will
open a show during Fashion Week, presenting
the work of the recently signed Nigerian artist
Ouattara Watts.
For a curator who has seemingly hit the
ground running, Mr. Restoin Roitfelds has
had little formal training in his feld. Although
he professes a love for museums and galleries,
he has never studied art in a formal setting.
He doesnt feel this will hold him back. Its
like anything in life: the only real way to gain
experience is to do it, he says with certainty.
Mr. Restoin Roitfeld is clearly driven. He is
obsessive about his work, he says. I think
about it 24/7. This is the only way that a busi-
ness will grow. You have to be obsessive about

it. Its a passion. Its work, but at the same
time, its pure pleasure. He credits his work
ethic to his parents. They are obsessive about
their work too.
He is also refreshingly cautious when it
comes to conducting his business. Instead
of pouring money into a glitzy gallery that
would have provided too much pressure and
overhead, hes decided to stick with a small
ofce and put on shows when, and if, Feedback
Ltd. has the money to do so. Also, I had the
feeling that I didnt want to be stuck in one
place going to the same gallery every day. You
have to be global and be visible around the
world, he muses.
Although Mr. Restoin Roitfeld is friends
with everyone from Dasha Zhukova to Osama
bin Ladens niece Wafah Dufour, he claims he
has still had to hustle like anyone else starting
out in the art world to get to know dealers and
artists and get invited to art fairs. Mr. Restoin
Roitfeld points out that Jef Koons is not
knocking at your door to show him. No one
wants to work with you unless you have the
experience.
Still, Mr. Restoin Roitfeld feels invigorated
by the New York ethos. There is no city where
they will give more of a chance to young
people than in New York. In Europe people
are a lot more snob.

The meritocratic spirit was inculcated in
him during boyhood summers spent at sleep-
away camp in Fresno, Calif. Its very hard to
picture this soign young man being forced to
run around a soccer feld in a pair of regulation
Umbro shorts, but Mr. Restoin Roitfeld visibly
relaxes when recalling these fond summer
memories. Being dropped into such an alien
environment didnt rufe him. People get
excited when the French person arrives in
camp, he remembers.
Hes considerably more skittish when
talking about his love life. Mr. Restoin Roitfeld
has been linked to a litany of women, includ-
ing Karolina Kurkova and Lindsay Lohan, but
his current squeeze of two and a half years is
a freelance stylist named Giovanna Battaglia.
Shes fve years older than he and they are now
living together. She moved in in January last
year, he says. She travels a lot, though.
Marriage, he adds, is not something that
is important to me but if it was important to
someone I loved, then I wouldnt be against it.
jeff koons is noT knocking AT youR dooR To show
him. no one wants to work with you unless you

Obviously, my parents dont put pressure on
me to get married and Im very young.
Armed with charm, chat, connections and
drive, Mr. Restoin Roitfeld is poised to become
a market player. He hopes his youth is an
asset. If I was going to [launch a business like
this], I wanted it to be a little bit more fun and
a little bit more open but still making sure that
the presentation was 10 out of 10.
Still, he worries about his ability to spot the
next big talent and hopes that with each tri-
umphant show, skeptics will concede that hes
earned a greater degree of respect. Its about
knowing what youve discovered has actually
succeeded and has led somewhere. And that
everyone who bad-mouthed us from the start
[may] have to admit this was a success.

ts a bright, unseasonably warm
morning in October and sun is
streaming into the ffth-foor
rehearsal space at the Alvin Ailey
American Dance Theaters gleam-
ing building on Ninth Avenue.
The Hells Kitchen studios
foor-to-ceiling windows create a stunning
sceneall brick buildings and fre escapes,
water towers and sky scrapers in an odd
jumble of angles and colors. Staggeringly
bendy and beautiful dancers, stretch in patch-
es of sunlight around the cavernous room.
Clad in unzipped hoodies, deep V-neck
tees and sweats, or leggings, leotards and
leg-warmers, they look muscled, relaxed and
very, very young. Some banter with each other,
others fnd a still corner and turn themselves
into impossible shapes.
But when Robert Battle strides in, clad in
dark jeans, a black turtleneck and a pinstripe
DKNY blazer, they turn alert. Mr. Battle
doesnt utter a word, but takes a seat on a
small, elevated platform, and sits very still, his
long fngers fexed as if a great deal of energy is
contained in them.
On this afternoon, dancer Cathy McCann is
leading the rehearsal, setting the choreogra-
phy for Paul Taylors Arden Court, a 1981 ballet
that will be performed by Alvin Ailey for the
frst time this November, when the company
takes the stage at City Center for its 40th
consecutive year. Lets do the second cast,
she says, briskly. I need you over there in that
corner, guys, she urges.
Six male dancers spring across the foor,
the elegant score by William Boyce booming
optimistically from speakers.
Throughout the dance, Masazumi Chaya,
the companys legendary associate artistic
director, scribbles furiously in a notebook and
confers with Ms. McCann during a technically
difcult section of the ballet. The dancers
spread across the foor, limbs akimbo, as some
perform headstands, linking their feet with
another dancers arms and forming a playful
segue into the next duet. In just four days Paul
Taylor himself will come to the studio see how
the piece is taking shape.
Exuding an air of calm, Mr. Battle just
watches. In spite of his magnanimous face, its
not difcult to imagine that his watchful eye
could be unsettling. The pressure, after all,
is on.
This July, while Alvin Ailey was on its
world tour in Moscow, Judith Jamison, the
companys longtime director, announced
that she was handing over artistic control to
Mr. Battle. He would be just the third creative
director in Alvin Aileys 53-year-old history.
I spoke to the dancers and we all went out for
a meal, recalls Mr. Battle of that momentous
summer evening. I didnt sleep that much
that night. It was cathartic. It felt right.
Since 1999, Mr. Battle had been a chore-
ographer and artist-in-residence at Ailey,
staging his ballets to great acclaim. Of his
creation The Hunt, which premiered last year,
The New York Times raved, Most impressive
is the brutal physicality of the dancing and
the way these men both fnd its nuances and
give it their all. His appointment this year
was not a surprise, but it nonetheless marks a
major new era for Alvin Ailey.

B
orn in Miami's Liberty
City neighborhood, Mr.
Battle moved to New York
to attend Juilliard, joining
Parsons Dance Company
upon his graduation. I was
always the big guy trying
not to knock into anybody, recalls Mr. Battle,
modestly. Though he no longer dances, he
often likes to stand in the wings during a
performance he has choreographed. I like
to stand on the same foor and feel what the
dancers are feeling at that moment. The same
nerves, the same vibrations from the music.
Ive been there, so there are times when I do
miss it. But I dance through these 30 marvel-
ous dancers.

Forget the drama and intrigue of flms like
Black Swan, or the camp, glittery posturing
of reality TV hits like Dancing With the Stars.
Mr. Battles leadership style, he hopes, is
considerably less alienating.
He makes a point of chatting to dancers
in the elevator, or acknowledging a small
moment when one of them has excelled in
rehearsal. I have my subtle ways, he muses,
of making sure things are moving forward.
Im not overly upset if a dancer makes a
mistake. A lot of great inventions come from
mistakes. What I cant abide is apathy. When
I see someone with great potential who isnt
doing what they could be, Im troubled. Its
hard to get beyond that. At the same time, Im
cognizant of their humanity. They pour it out
on the stage, so sometimes, its important to
sit with someone and ask, whats really going
on with you?
But beyond working closely with his
dancersnine new faces have joined the
company under his leadership thus farMr.
Battle is keenly aware of the challenges and
opportunities that face an arts organization in
difcult economic times.
Part of that awareness includes strength-
ening Aileys partnerships, like the one behind
Home, a hip-hop work by Ronnie Harris that
will debut at City Center on Dec. 1, marking
World AIDS Day. Downstairs in the costume
department, designers are hard at work
making street clothes that can be put through
their acrobatic paces, deconstructing jeans
and testing out sneakers.
The work was a commission from the
pharmaceutical giant Bristol-Myers Squib as a
part of the companys Fight H.I.V. Your Way
initiative, and is an interpretation of true
stories gathered form those living with H.I.V.
and AIDS. We lost Alvin Ailey in 1989, and at
that time there was a lot of shame around it
Its a part of not just wanting to be seen but to
be heard. Were not just entertaining people
here. Its about illuminating those dark places
we might not always like to go, so that we dont
have to return to them, says Mr. Battle.
This season, the company is also honoring

Alvin Aileys most celebrated work, Revela-
tions, an ambitious ballet that will, for its
opening night revival, be performed to live
music with a cast of 50.
Keeping track of all of these develop-
ments means that Mr. Battle must multitask.
Between rehearsals and lunches with key
donors, he keeps tabs on the dance foor via
a fat-screen TV monitor that sits behind his
desk. Last year, I started to think about a
vision. Just to see my vision unfold. Its a sense
of anticipation, he says.
One of the programs he is most proud of is
the New Directions Choreography lab, which
will work as a sort of think tank of movement,
allowing young choreographers to test out
their ideas in the studio, uninhibited by the
pressure to deliver a product. When someone
is just relishing the creative process, I think
thats when really interesting things begin to
happen.
He is also happy to give others the same
opportunities that were once given to him.
I remember when Judith called me to do my
frst work. I can still relive that moment of
elation and joy. Its awesome to be able to pass
that along.
Allowing new talents to emerge under
his direction is part of a wider philosophy of
spiritual reciprocity, a term he credits to

an Schragers Brooklyn-bred rasp
comes at you like spitfre. Ideas
plucked from the worlds of art, food
and commercetumble forth from
all directions. It's easy to imagine
swarms of exclamation points foat-
ing in the air above his head.
In minutes, the millionaire hotelier has
skipped from the wonders of Trader Joes to
the charms of Apple, from how bottle service
killed New York nightlife to how, and why,
Williamsburg is the citys new Soho.
Picture Malcolm Gladwells brain. Add
Tom Fords sexed-up style sensibility, say, and
round of the package with Woody Allens
hyperfuent New Yorkese. Speak to the
65-year-old hotelier about something that
makes him passionate, or drives him crazy,
and you can imagine precisely such a creature.
Right now, whats driving Mr. Schrager
crazy is $20 cofee.
The king of boutique hotels, whose
Gramercy Park Hotel has defned the boho-
luxe look of Gotham hospitality in the past
decade, making him a fortune in the process,
will come out and say it. Paying 20 bucks for a
hit of cafeine is preposterous.
I dont think people care about the guy
with brass buttons and epaulets, serving them
something out of bone china, spreading out
a tablecloth, he says. Previously, my hotels
included, if you woke up and called room
service and asked for a pot of cofee? Itd be
at least $20. Seven dollar service charge. And
youd have to wait 45 minutes!
Though there will always be those
customers willing to pay for fve-star opulence
and violently expensive hot beverages, Mr.
Schrager thinks enough is enough.
On Oct. 11, he launched what is perhaps his
riskiest concept to date: PUBLIC Chicago, a
total reimagining of the citys Ambassador
East Hotel, which aims to be the paragon of
mass class. The Trader Joes of posh hotels.
Room rates begin at a cut-rate $135.
The Ambassador, which opened its doors in
1926, was once a well-groomed Midwestern
glamour-puss of a property. Marilyn Monroe,
Frank Sinatra, Humphrey Bogart and Lauren
Bacall thronged the Pump Room, its famous
see-and-be-seen restaurant. But by mid-2010,
when Mr. Schrager got the keys, it had lost its
luster.
IAN
SCHRAGER
GOES
PUBLIC
By SARAH HoRnE
It was essentially a dump, says Mr.
Schrager, who ofered $25 million to buy it
from Chicago developers Peter Dumont and
David Bossy, according to reports.
Located on Chicagos Gold Coast, which is
jam-packed with international hotel chains,
the Ambassador had to become something dif-
ferent. It was sexy. I respond to a building the
way another man might respond to a woman.
Its a visceral thing. I walk through, and its got
the bones. The sex appeal.
It wasnt just below-the-belt thinking. Im
in an opportunistic business, and the acquisi-
tion was very compelling, he adds.
Eschewing what he terms design on
steroids, PUBLIC Chicago is rendered in
calm tones of camel and wheat, mellow
metallics and crisp white. The supper club
inspired Pump Room has been reinvigorated
by chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten, and a pot
of cofee from room service costs fve bucks,
thank you very much. It gets there in fve to
six minutes, says Mr. Schrager, triumphantly.
The bottom of the hotel market is wide
open, he says. Its completely devoid of
creativity. Theres nothing original there,

theres no elevated experience. With PUBLIC
Chicago, he aims to change that.
For a moment, he stays emphatically on
message. PUBLIC Chicagos wider concept, its
accessibility, is just the beginning. Im prob-
ably more excited about this brand than I have
been about anything in a long time. Its a little
bit like what Terence Conran and Mary Quant
did in London in the 60s. What Andy Warhol
did with art. He took the pretense out of it.
Make it available to anybody and everybody.
B
etting on high occupancy,
rather than sky-high room
rates, is a canny move in this
economic climate. When
we got in the boutique
space, recalls Mr. Schrager,
everyone was very skepti-
cal of it. They thought that only people who
wore head-to-toe black and lived in Soho
went to boutique hotels. About 15 years ago,
I remember The Wall Street Journal had a
headline: The Death of the Boutique Hotel. It
was like Dewey Defeats Truman. Now whats
happened is that everybody went into that
space. Its really, really overcrowded. Today,
the opportunities are above that space and
beneath that space.
Instead of bowing to amenity creep and
gouging guests on bath butlers and doggie
massages, Mr. Schrager is getting back to the
basics: good service and plain old good taste.
The business of doing business has
changed. Theres a paradigm shift. I think
people are going to be very focused on value.
Its not quite so easy to become wealthy.
Whats going on in Europe Im not an
economist. But what was really challenging
[with this project] was to redefne luxury
service. Get rid of all those things that nobody
cares about. Create a sophistication that
someone whos rich and someone whos not
rich can both appreciate.
Which brings him back to cheap-but-chic
visionary companies like Trader Joes, or the
service-centered ethos at the Apple Store,
where high design is a given but hasnt clouded
the focus on people. I think its being treated
with dignity. Its being friendly. When I got
started 25 years ago, we were looking to get
ourselves noticed. We really focused on the
innovation of [the hotel space]. The look and
feel of it. Well, thats not enough now. I learned
a lot from the Apple stores. Youre met by a
brand ambassador and you dont wait on line
to pay. The person who helps you, theyre an
expert. If you go into a hotel, its like staying in
somebodys home. If youre treated beauti-
fully, thats what matters.
Born in the Bronx in 1946, the son of a gar-
ment worker, Mr. Schrager has New Yorkits
energetic mayhem, its sometimes destructive
glamour, its bull-headed optimismin his
bones. By 1977, still under 30, he and business
partner Steve Rubell became the life force of
New York nightlife with their club Studio 54.
Its starry legacyLiza, Mick, Biancastill
elicits a heady era in Manhattan, when the
Beautiful People danced til dawn (with not
a stretch Hummer or gourmet taco truck in
sight).
In 1981, after an oft-reported spell of time
in prison for tax fraud, Mr. Schrager was
primed to reinvent himself. Studio 54 may call
to mind a lost decade of high-octane, reckless
fun, but it had exacted its toll. Looking back
on that era, he told French Vogue, It almost
destroyed me. I must have been intoxicated by
the success of it all and got lost along the way.
I made certain mistakes and I paid very dearly
for them. Very dearly.
By 1984, Mr. Schrager had hit upon a new
idea. The boutique hotel. Morgans, the
Royalton, the Paramount and the Delano
followed, as did a fruitful period of intense
collaboration with designer Philippe Starck,
which began in 1988. In 2005, he founded the
Ian Schrager Company with the Gramercy
Park Hotel, a collaboration with artist and

flmmaker Julian Schnabel and its frst
showpiece.
But today, Mr. Schrager seems to be
tinkering with the formula that catapulted
him to rock-star status. Hotel design, he says,
has become overblown. The design! You hear
about somebody doing a hotel and the frst
question is always, Whos designing it? I
really feel like its Frankensteins monster,
what we created here. Theres no more tricks.
When I used to do hotels with Philippe, there
was always something, a little wink, a chair
that was lit, or a phrase on a wall. Now its
gone too far, theres a thousand tricks in every
square inch of every hotel space. Everyone
is trying to overwhelm you with how clever
they are. Its oppressive and precious and you
feel like you cant breathe. Its just too much.
I think were trying to go the other way, he
says, pausing to catch up with his thoughts.
Plain old good taste is a universal language.
When the moment is right, Mr. Schrager
also feels that the PUBLIC Chicago model can
work in New York. We have one hotel in the
works, a new build downtown, and were close
to announcing a second hotel. In this climate,
its difcult to get anything done. In New
York hotels, I think theres going to be price
pressure, because theres been a tremendous
increase in supply. But business is always
going to be done in New York[the citys
economy] will get back to where it was.
A die-hard city-dweller and booster, Mr.
Schrager is passionately engaged in under-
standing what makes New York tick and how
the urban landscape has transformed over
the three decades hes been at the center of it
all. Before he was a slick, powerful hotelier,
Mr. Schrager was one of Manhattans original
after-dark pioneers. Today, the co-founder of
Studio 54 says the citys partyscape falls fat.
Im a little disappointed with the nightlife
in New York now, he says, a hint of exaspera-
tion in his voice. I hope I dont sound like F.
Scott Fitzgerald, who thought New York was
at its best in the 20s. But you go out on a
weekend night in New York and its not
the same as it once was. When I was in the
nightlife biz, there was an electricity in the
air. People were up til 4 or 5 in the morning.
When we were in the club business, anybody
that wasnt from New York, someone from
Florida or California, who wanted to open a
club here? We would laugh at them.
Mr. Schragers engagement with the city is
infectious. You sort of wish hed adopt you. Or
at least invite you into his richly drawn vision
of New York as it was, and as it could be.
Hes fascinated by the shift from
downtown to Brooklyn and the gentrifcation
of Williamsburg, which he deems one of the
places in New York thats more fertile than
anywhere. Hes also intrigued by the cult
status of food culture in the city. I passed
through the era when the movie stars were It
and the artists were It. Then it was the rock
stars, the media kingpins. Now it seems to
be the chefs, he says, praising restaurants
like the Smile, the low-key Bond Street cafe
where Melia Marden, daughter of artist Brice
Marden, runs the kitchen. Its really cool,
says Mr. Schrager, who pops across the street
from his 8,500-square-foot, $14.5 million
penthouse at his project 40 Bond Street,
which changed Noho from a boho thorough-
fare into a thoroughbred.
He isnt about to write of the age of the
dance club or the glamour of dressing up to
stay out all night. The most succulent spit-
roasted pig in the world doesnt supplant the
need for a really good nightlife. A healthy
nightlife is part of the fabric of a city, like the
theater, like music. Dont forget that clubbing,
at its core, its still young people dancing and
socializing. The city makes it hard, is really
hard on nightlife now. So there are roadblocks.
But somebody should do it, and do it right. Ive
done that already.
These days, if the indefatigable entrepre-
neur is staying up all night, its because of
PUBLIC Chicago. He is anxious to see how it
will be received and hopes its as revolutionary
as he believes it to be. He still has big
ambitions. When I open up a hotel, I take
it very personally, I internalize it. Its a real
act of love for me, to try to do something that
hasnt been done before. I always feel anxious.
I feel like Im opening up a show.
When I used to do hotels WIth PhIlIPPe, there Was alWays
somethIng, a lIttle WInk, a chaIr that Was lIt, or a Phrase on
a Wall. noW Its gone too far, theres a thousand tricks In
every square Inch of every hotel sPace," says mr. schrager.

hese days, Susan Chin is
moving at breakneck speed.
I can barely ft this in,
she lamented when The
Observer rang her in early
October, just days before
she took her post as the
executive director at the Design Trust for
Public Space, a forward-thinking nonproft
that links private development projects with
community needs.
The this she is referring to wasnt even an
interview; it was the call to try to organize a
time for the interview.
As assistant commissioner for capital
projects in the New York City Department
of Cultural Afairsa position she held for
the past 23 yearsMs. Chin worked to guide
$2 billion to over 200 cultural institutions
across the city. At City Hall, she helped shape
the citys urban landscape for years to come,
ushering in projects like the New Museum
on the Bowery, Lincoln Centers Alice Tully
Hall and the Museum of the Moving Image in
Queens.
Few other individuals in New York have
worked so tirelessly to get big, ambitious
building projects of the ground, cementing

the citys role as an international cultural
capital. Ms. Chin helps make New York look
like New York and anticipates how it will look
50 or 100 years from now.
Projects she has supported have earned
high praise. The New York Times called the
New Museum a magically unsentimental
intrusion, an antidote to the generic luxury
springing up around it. Its a tagline that
could well be her mission statement.
On the cusp of her migration to the Design
Trust, a sort of think tank for the optimum
uses of public space, Ms. Chin was upbeat.
Founded in 1995, the Trust has been key in
transformative projects like the High Line
and collaborates with interests as disparate
as the fashion industry and the Taxi and
Limousine Commission, doing its utmost to
keep the city vibrant and make living here a
better prospect. Here we go. Im ready for a
new adventure, Ms. Chin said briskly.
In spite of the grim economic news of late,
Ms. Chin expresses optimism for the city
of the future. Its about helping people [to]
plan, to choose great designers, to build really
exceptional museums, theaters, botanical
gardens, she says. When you have an
economy where things are not so robust, its
a great time to plan, she adds. As long as
we are strategic, and have a vision about the
future, thats really when the economy can
recover. [Its] constantly thinking: how do
you make small moves that will put people to
work?
Her associates in the world of architecture
agree. Rick Bell, the American Institute of
Architects' executive director for New York,
believes visionary designers are eager to
work more in this city than anywhere in
the world...What is needed is to get projects
moving, and [to] bolster the atmosphere that
encourages new construction and innova-
tion. Ms. Chin, he says, brings creativity,
exuberance and persistence to the tasks
at hand, including others in collaborative
decision-making but taking responsibility for
bringing new ideas, new initiatives and new
spaces to light.
At the core of Ms. Chins goals in her new
position is to educate. When people are
educated on the benefts of quality design and
progressive uses of public space, she believes,
then the other aspects of her job will fall into
place. The discussion in the design and urban
architecture community is how do we imbed
this kind of thinking about the public realm,

she says. Her success at the Design Trust will
hinge on educating the public to demand
quality design and also teaching elected
ofcials about what makes our city attractive
to live in.
One of her chief goals is to make design
and architecture more transparent and she
sees her involvement in the A.I.A., where
she serves as the chair of the organizations
Gold Medal Award advisory committee, as a
means to this end. It is about communica-
tion. Sharing what architects do. I think its a
similar issue for the Design Trust, she says:
Amplifying their message and explaining to
folks what they are engaged in.
Rochelle Slovin, a founder of the Museum
of the Moving Image, is one of many former
partners who are eager to praise Ms. Chins
capabilities. She is extremely, excellently well
matched to the objectives of the organization
she is joining, Ms. Slovin says. Her expertise
and the mission of the Design Trust really do
seem very well matched.
Her inside track at City Hall wont hurt.
Her design sensibility and profound
understanding of cultural infrastructure
development has helped to enhance the
role of the arts in neighborhoods across the
city, says Kate Levin, a commissioner at the
Department of Cultural Afairs.
During Ms. Chins tenure at City Hall, the
city has stood at an interesting crossroads.
9/11 raised the publics interest in participat-
ing in design and architecture; it really did
increase public engagement, she says. The
Bloomberg administration has also helped,
she adds. Mayor Bloomberg believing in
investment in the public realm has also been
a really golden moment for our city. He has
empowered his commissioners to choose the
best architects and landscape architects,
she says, becoming more animated. [Major]
Its about helping people [to] plan, to choose

architects have now wanted to work for the
city and public sector, when they never before
wanted to do those type of commissions.
At the Design Trust, Ms. Chin will oversee
some quirkier projects. Among other initia-
tives, the group is looking at agricultural
activity across the city and addressing issues
of sustainability. I think green design is an
essential component to modern living. Id love
to see green design becoming universally part
of the design process, that we dont have to
think about it as this separate thing, she says.
She is especially excited by the Design
Trusts Taxi of Tomorrow projecta
move to transform the citys taxi feet with
custom-built, fuel-efcient vehicles. Im
really interested in extending that efort into
larger transportation issues, and I see lots of
potential [there].
Seeing potential for dramatic transforma-
tions in even the most quotidien aspects of the
city's landscape is Ms. Chin's fort. But she
defects praise on the subject of her unique
skill set, saying Its [really] the cultural
organizations that have always led the way.
Ultimately though, Susan Chin is an adept
facilitator. She makes things happen, and she
knows how to get ambitious projects of the
ground. Her thinking? In New York, culture
must always be king.

Giustiniani could well have stepped out of a

He swears he takes the 6 train, but its hard
to imagine him on anything other than a Ves-
pa. But for a hippie-ish shell bracelet around
his right wrist, he looks like the quintessential
genteel, moneyed Italian.
As he opens the door to Felice Wine Bar,
the second Upper East Side outpost of his
Tuscan wine bar and eatery, this stretch of the
East 80s seems like a little piece of Firenze:
polished, decidedly European, but, like that
hippie bracelet, just a bit more easy-going than
you might expect in this neck of the woods.
He dashes efciently about the restaurant,
profering bottles of sparkling water, pour-
Jacopo Giustiniani grew up playing among the vines at his
grandparents Tuscan wine estate. Now the wine buyer
and producer has expanded his familys empire with a
second outpost of Felice Wine Bar, bringing a youthful edge
to the Sant Ambroeus clans Old World sensibility.
La

ing a serving of the house-label wine into an
out-size glass.
Mr. Giustiniani, 31, arrived in New York in
2006, fresh from the Universit degli Studi
di Firenze. He was enlisted to update the
wine culture at the Sant Ambroeus restau-
rants and oversee their wine lists. My uncle
Gherardo [Guarducci] wanted me to come
in, give the staf tastings every week. Really
make the restaurants a destination for wine.
People thought of Sant Ambroeus, to a certain
extent, as a place for a croissant and cofee. We
wanted to change that.
With wine from the family estate, the Fat-
toria Sardi Giustiniani, located in the hills just
outside of Lucca, Mr. Giustiniani launched
Sant Ambroeuss private label wine, which he
named Felice, after his maternal grandfather.
He taught me everything about food.
He was just obsessed. I mean, as soon as he
fnished breakfast, he was talking about what
hed have for lunch. And at lunch, he was
thinking about dinner. It was everything from
how to know when a fsh is truly fresh, to how
to know when a prosciutto is well-aged, says
Mr. Giustiniani, gesticulating wildly.
Although Mr. Giustiniani intended to
stay in Manhattan only a year, by the end
of it he was hooked. With business partner
Dimitri Pauli, his uncle opened Casa Lever
in 2009, and Jacopo stayed on to help. They
had expanded to the frst Felice location, on
First Avenue near 64th Street, in 2007, when
they saw that there was a hole in the market
for upscale, casual spots on the Upper East
Side. Their vision is a departure from the
unapologetic red-sauce Italian joints that still
dominate the area.
Robert McKinley, the designer behind
Rushmeyers, Cain, Gold Bar and PM, gave
the corner space a been-there-forever vibe,
creating chandeliers from wine jugs and a bar
that evokes a working-mans joint on some
just-so Italian backstreet. The place is cool
enough for the young couples who live in the
surrounding blocks, without being so cool
that it alienates the local gentry whove been
around for decades.
Everyone was opening downtown, says
Mr. Giustiniani, and talking with Gherardo,

From his paternal grandfather, Sebastiano,
who passed away in 2002, Mr. Giustiniani
learned the ins and outs of the wine business
and inherited his devotion to Italian wine.
His winery produces a vintage that honors
Sebastiano as well. Its label features a sketch

Henry James novel, a family seat where Mr.
Giustiniani has passed many well-lit, idyllic,

ts 5 oclock on a pleasant fall day,
and I am sharing a bottle of wine
with the four principle designers of
AvroKOKristina ONeal, Adam
Farmerie, William Harris and Greg
Bradshawat their recently opened
Noho restaurant, Saxon + Parole.
Mr. Harris is excitedly trying to explain their
frms design philosophy.
When Kristina and I were in China, we were
given a tour of an artist compound where there
was this amazing manicured garden, he begins,
glancing around the table at his partners for
nods of confrmation. The guide was taking
us through it, pointing out all sorts of beautiful
plants and arrangements, and then at the end
there was this really gnarled, beguiling, twisted
tree that was so out of place and diferent from
the rest of the garden. So we asked our guide
what it was doing there, and in his broken Eng-
lish he said, Well, that is here because it is best
ugly. It was there because it was an interrupt to
all these beautiful things around it. It made the
space better. It was sublimely imperfect. It was
gorgeous because it wasnt so self-consciously
manicured.
The AvroKO team has taken this best ugly
philosophy and run with it, creating a global
design business with projects including the W
Hotel in Bangkok, Kid Robots Los Angeles and
New York stores, and, of course, restaurants,
which the four friends and former classmates at
Carnegie Mellon professionally frst collabo-
rated on 10 years ago. Mr. Bradshaw and Mr.
Farmerie had just started an architecture group
called Avro Design, and Ms. ONeal and Mr.
Harris were growing their own media brand-
ing and concept shop, Ko Media. Together,
they opened eatery Public with Mr. Farmeries
brother Brad as chef. Inspired by the depres-
sion era of public works projectsthink oak

They were the cool new kids on the block,
recalls Cindy Allen, editor in chief of Interior
Design magazine. They had this industrial, yet
sleek, organic style. They were one of the early
design frms to create what was then becoming
a trendy style.
As Mr. Harris puts it, Public was the

launching pad. Clients began lining up outside
AvroKOs door looking to work with the restau-
rant industrys rising design stars. Since Public,
the team has received countless accolades for
the spaces theyve created together and, while
theyve branched out to hotels and retail work,
restaurants remain their true passion.
Were history nerds, admits Mr. Harris.
We love to read about and research times
when spaces were less design-conscious and it
was more purely a matter of function. Func-
tionality, utility, practicalitythose are really
strong tenets in our approach to design and you
can fnd them in all our projects. The folded
horse blankets at Saxon + Parole, for example,
serve to dampen sound between two of the
dining rooms. At Public, repurposed post ofce
boxes double as wine lockers in which loyal
patrons can stash a bottle or two.
The foursome believe one of the keys to their
success is a holistic approach toward design.
With two architects in Mr. Farmerie and Mr.
Bradshaw and two graphic artists in Mr. Harris
and Ms. ONeal, the group is able to tackle every
aesthetic aspect of a project, from the big-
picture structural design of the space down to
the minutiae like the labels on the house wine.
When they frst started, this one-stop-shop
approach was rare in the world of design.
We all realized very early on that we didnt
necessarily have to play by the rules, explains
Mr. Farmerie. Architects didnt just have to
do architecture, and people who are supposed
to be doing branding didnt have to only do
that. And, once we realized we could swap
across these diferent mediums, we found that
we could also swap across diferent types of
work. A design frm didnt just have to do work
for clients. We could also open a restaurant
ourselves. It was like taking the shackles of."
An architecture and design frm owning and
operating its projectsthe technical term for
such a project is self-propelledremains
uncommon in the hospitality design industry,
and some were skeptical.
There was a little bit of , Oh, so you think
you can do all these things and do them well, do
you? recalls Ms. ONeal. We defnitely had
to prove ourselves. But, overall, I think people
maybe enjoyed or admired our chutzpah, our
willingness to do whatever we wanted to do.
Interior Design was one such admirer. Thats
courageous risk-taking at its best, especially in
the times weve had, she says. Thats not wait-
ing around for the phone to ring, and everyone
can respect that.
Another venture that paid of was AvroKOs
early exploration of the Asian market. Initially,
the driving motivation was a ferce interest,
especially on the part of Mr. Harris, in the
cultural and artistic opportunities that Asia
ofered designers.
We love the amazing access to artisans,
the amazing access to woodcraft and pottery,
he says, his eyes lighting up. All the stuf that
everyone ships back to the States and marks
up a gazillion times is right in your back yard.
Theres actually a better source for antique
American liquor bottles in a Bangkok street
market than you can fnd here!
While it may have been purely an artistic
venture at frst, expanding eastward proved to
be a fortuitous business move for AvroKO as
well, and theyve since opened an ofce in Hong
Kong and a studio in Bangkok. With demand
slowing signifcantly in the past couple of years
at home, and the economies of China and other
Asian countries exploding, almost all major
design and hospitality groups have moved
a signifcant portion of their business east.
According to Interior Design, which publishes
a ranked list of the biggest Hospitality Giants
(on which AvroKO holds the 57th spot), the
amount of overseas projects a typical Hospi-
tality Giant works on annually has increased
from 19 percent in 2006 to 34 percent in 2011.
AvroKo estimates as much as one-third of their
business is now located in Asia.

the recession Asia was much more active than

Last night Mick Jagger and Paul McCartney

he says, motioning to small, white-clothed
tables in the unassuming space.
Each morning Mr. Mania pedals his red
bicycle enthusiastically up Lexington Avenue
to serve clients he calls friends inside Sette
Mezzos protective lair for high-profle New

meals.
Over the years, Mr. Mania has become so

inspiring the restaurants name for its location
between 70th and 71st streets.
For Sette Mezzo, power comes in simplicity.
You may not notice its understated facade, but
pop in one evening and the place will likely
be packed. Since it frst opened 23 years ago,
its been a neighborhood haven, establishing
an impressive ledger of regularslike MoMA
president Agnes Gund.
They sat us by the window with lots of
lightwe just loved it, she says about her frst
dining experience at Sette Mezzo more than 20
years ago.
Now Ms. Gund dines there once or twice
weekly, and her favorite spot is by that same
front window.
You always know someone when you go
thereits a neighborhood place, she says.
Ms. Gund defends the restaurant from
claims that it discriminates against certain
customers. Some people say they wont take
you if they dont know you. Well, they didnt
used to take people because they didnt have
room, she says.
Ms. Gund, however, says she never has a
problem getting a table.
David Mugrabi, another regular customer
who has been coming to Sette Mezzo for nearly
two decades, says the number one appeal is the
cuisine.
Even their Bolognese is just to die formy
wife tries to replicate it all the time, he says.
Mr. Mugrabi recalled his frst visit to the eatery,
as a young man with his parents, aunts and
uncles.
Little has changed since, except for a single
renovation in August 2009.
It made it look a bit lighter, livelierthey
changed the walls, he says, but otherwise he
recalls nothing diferent. I wouldnt call it the
best atmosphere in New York for a restaurant.
The atmospheres not bad, but you go if you
want a good meal.

Even daytime diva Oprah Winfrey praises
the cuisine and placed Sette Mezzo on her list
of favorite New York spots in 2006.
Mr. Mania thinks the reason for the eaterys
popularity is simple.
Here people dont want change. In the end
they always eat the same! he says.
Mr. Esposito, co-founder and owner of the
restaurant with Mr. Mania and Mr. Vertucci,
says their light and simple dishes are key to
successand are more difcult to perfect than
they sound.
Its easy to cover a mistake by adding a lot
of butter or cream, but when its simple you
have to have it right, he says, adding that they
take weekly trips to buy seafood and produce at
Hunts Point Market in the Bronx.
Sunday nights are the biggest night, with
each devoted customer claiming his or her
usual spot every week. With no bar, the eatery
can accommodate only 60 sit-down diners. If
youre lucky enough to score a tableeasier
to do at lunch than at dinner, and incredibly
unlikely on a Sundaybe sure to bring cash or
be prepared to sign a house check, a relic of a
tradition that only adds to Sette Mezzos allure.
We mail our customers a paper statement
at the end of the month, and we never have a
problem, Mr. Mania says. The only computer
we have is the telephone.
He says the house checks have always
ensured successful payment, except once. In
early 2009, Sette Mezzo posted on its window
a bounced check of a regular customer: Bernie
Madof.
We wanted people to know, weve been hit
by Madof too, Mr. Mania says.
As far as the secret to Sette Mezzos success,
Mr. Esposito says the answer lies in the unique
relationship between staf and diner.
People like to go there and to be themselves,
but you can have somebody really famous next
to you. We dont bother those people. We treat
everybody the same.

hough other New York
neighborhoods do their ut-
most to lure deep-pocketed
buyers, the Upper East Side
still reigns supreme. 10021
has Old New York at its
fngertipsCentral Park on
its doorstep, smart boutiques lining Madison
Avenue and a staggering swathe of cultural
institutions at every turn.
Curtis Jackson, a senior vice president/
director at Brown Harris Stevens, is feeling
optimistic. In general sales are certainly mov-
ing along. Were doing deals, he says. There is
a lack of inventory for the most part and Id say
its a price-sensitive market. People are looking
for value, and if they feel theyre getting a fair
price on a property, then theyre proceeding
forward.
According to John Carapella, vice president
of Citi-Habitats Inc., the rental market on the
Upper East Side is also booming. Vacancy rates,
he notes, are at an incredible low of 1 percent
and a correctly priced apartment will often rent
within three to fve business days. Some go
within hours of hitting the market, he says.
Undeniably, the Upper East Side has long
reveled in its reputation as one of Manhattans
toniest and most traditional neighborhoods. A
Park Avenue doorman, a dog-walker with his
well-groomed charges, the parade of yellow
cabs whizzing down Fifth Avenue, all signify
having made it. But recently, as downtown has
heated up, the Upper East Side has also become
somewhat more accessible. Increasingly,
many young professionals and young families
have begun migrating uptown as rental prices
downtown continue to skyrocket. My clients
feel at ease knowing that families are living
here with children says James Power, owner of
Advantage Relocation Consultants Inc. They
know it must be a safe area. For those without
tots, a variety of new bars and restaurants are
also enlivening the neighborhoods after-dark
ambiance.
Above all, property value on the Upper East
Side is unimpeachable, say sales experts. Jane
Aurichio, an agent at TOWN Residential LLC,
notes that the $36.5 million purchase of the
Harkness mansion by world-renowned art
dealer Larry Gagosian this August was one
such example. The 100-year-old, 50-foot-wide
Renaissance-revival townhouse on East 75th
Street is probably one of the most notewor-
thy properties in all of Manhattan, says Ms.
Aurichio. When it comes to historic trophy
properties, the U.E.S. will always have an edge.
From brick walk-ups to incredibly luxuri-
ous new high rises, the U.E.S. also ofers a wide
variety of housing options. Pricier Upper East
Side properties tend to lie west of Lexington,
heading in the direction of Central Park, which
is largely due to public transportations being
more accessible. However, when it arrives,
the Second Avenue subway will no doubt be a
game-changer. The new line, which is pro-
jected to be completed in 2016, makes nearby
properties compelling for investors. Real estate
insiders project that property values nearby
will get a boost. We are starting to see inves-
tors looking to buy in the vicinity of 72nd Street
and 86th Street east of Second Avenue, shares
Doug Perlson, co-founder and CEO of alterna-
tive real estate brokerage RealDirect. The idea
is that these areas will be in close proximity to
the new line, he says. Also adding to the value
of the neighborhood is the addition of the new
Fairway market at 204 East 86th Street, putting
cheese and olives, fresh produce and patisserie
closer to hand.
York Avenue is also getting buzz, say experts.
With its quiet charm, gracious layouts and
some of the best deals around, its a prime loca-
tion for U.E.S. bargain hunters. You are going
to get a lot of space for your money [there],
says Mr. Power.
Elsewhere, says Joanie Schumacher, sales
director at the Laurel Condominium, a new-
construction condominium on the Upper East
Side repped by Corcoran Sunshine Marketing
Group, our last quarter was up 12 percent from
the quarter before. She feels that the classic
neighborhood will always do well. Theres a
pretty strong market up here, especially in the
luxury market.

he mention of Czech cuisine
usually calls to mind hearty
dishes of potato dumplings
and root vegetables, roast
pork and sauerkraut. But
Hospoda, a new epicurean
endeavor from executive
chef Olda Sahajdak and chef de cuisine Marek
Sada, aims to change all of that.
Both Mr. Sahajdak and Mr. Sada hail from
Pragues acclaimed eatery La Degustation
Bohme Bourgeoise. Their U.S. restaurant
focuses on contemporary interpretations of
their native countrys fare, as well as Austrian
and Bavarian specialties. Visitors with at least
two hours to dine should spring for the $88,
seven-course tasting menu, the highlight of
which is a fatiron steak in sweet and savory
Svkov saucea staple of Czech cooking
made from root veggies, bacon, meat stock,
sugar, four and cream. The fried egg with
chanterelles, caulifower velout and nutmeg
also stands out. While the preparation could be
characterized as edgy and modernthere was
more than one foamy pure atop a vast white
platetraditional Czech favors and ingredi-
ents are richly present in each of the dishes.
Even the bread is authentically dense and dry.
Appropriately housed in the same build-
ing as the Czech consulate and the Bohemian
National Hall, Hospodas stripped-away dcor
includes rich walnut accents, a glass foor and
glass-sided bar, which, respectively, allow
visitors to view an impressive collection of
bottles in the subterranean wine cellar and the
stainless-steel kegs that hold the restaurants
single brew: a vaunted Pilsner Urquell. Draft
master Lukas Svoboda, whose rsum includes
winning the 2010 Pilsner Urquell Master
Bartender award, explains that four distinct
technical poursCrem Urquell, Slice, Sweet
and Neatby which the beer is put through
multiple screens that difuse the carbonation,
give each a distinct head and favor. Beer fans
who want to try them all can opt for the $19
draught tasting.
Hospoda is located at 321 East 73rd Street,
between First and Second avenues.

THETHRILL
OF THE HUNT
A
fter psychology teacher-
turned-L.S.D. guru
Timothy Leary was fred
by Harvard in 1963, he
continued his research at
the Castalia Institute in
Millbrook, N.Y. The king of
counterculture dropped truckloads of acid and
conducted his experiments with hallucinogens
in the midst of 100-acre horse farms and the
painterly landscape that makes up the Hudson
Valley hunt country.
Though Leary might be one of the most
iconic, he is by no means the only colorful
character to have spent time in a pocket of
upstate New York that boasts German barons,
fashion editors and movie stars as well as the
ubiquitous hedge fund managers.
There are a lot of Europeans here, agrees
Patricia Jean, who, with her husband, Michel,
owns and runs Stissing House, a country-chic
restaurant set in a 1782 tavern in Pine Plains.
Transplants from New York City (they used to
own Provence restaurant in Soho), they frst
bought their house in 1989 and moved out of
the city permanently fve years ago. We were
attracted by the wide-open spaces and horse
culture. It reminded me of Virginia and Michel
of France.
They are by no means alone; Hudson Valley
hunt country seems to have become a place
that attracts a laid-back, quietly cool crowd
fed up with the overpriced and overpopulated
Hamptons. The area certainly has its share
of celebrities: Liam Neeson, Frdric Fekkai,
Bette Midler and Frank Langella all own houses
here, but you wont catch any of them in front
of a step and repeat. Weekend residents dont
blink an eye if they see Mr. Langella tugging
on an oyster at Stissing House or Ms. Midler
perusing the wares at the Fitch's Corner Horse
Trials. In many ways, Dutchess
County and its environs are
reminiscent of the British Home
Counties, regions near London
where prominent members of
British society have second
homes. Tycoons like Paul Tu-
dor Jones and Tommy Motto-
la own properties in Dutchess
County, as do members of the
Bulgari jewelry dynasty and
the scions of railway magnate
Averell Harriman.
Mercifully, its not all
heir-heads and commodities
traders. Head out of Millbrook
onto Route 82 and youll fnd
the towns of Clinton Corners
and Tivoli, which have attracted
a slightly hipper fashion crowd;
farther afeld is Rhinebeck,
where John Jacob Astor IV built Astor Courts,
his winter retreat, and where Chelsea Clinton
was married to much fanfare in the summer of
2010. Even Madonna was recently seen check-
ing out an estate in Millbrook with a price tag
of $21 million. She passed on the property but
her presence apparently wont be missed. She
wouldnt have wanted to be a part of the com-
munity and thats what this part
of the world is all about, snifs
one local resident.
What ultimately has
brought the smart set
to hunt country is its
physical beauty (which
peaks in early autumn,
when the valley is
blanketed with red and
gold leaves) and some
of the fnest hunting
in the United States.
Pheasant season starts
on Oct. 1 and lasts until
Feb. 29, while the fox
season starts in late Au-
gust and carries on until
January. With the start
of these yearly sporting
rituals, hunt country
shifts into forward gear
and the social machine

goes into overdrive. Weekends are lled with
activity, whether its shooting at the Masho-
mack Preserve and Clove Valley Rod and Gun
clubs, going to an early-morning meet to see
the Millbrook Fox Hounds move o, or playing
soccer with the local team started a few
years ago by some polo-playing Argentines
who thought that the only thing Dutchess
County really lacked was a proper soccer
pitch.
And thats just during the day.
Nighttime entertaining is a heady
aair. Owing to the high number
of British expatriates who have
settled in Duchess County, a
dinner-party culture prevails.
People entertain well without
being ostentatious; so while you
might drink a bottle of 1982 La te at
an Italian billionaires house, there is
every chance youll be drinking it while
wearing your oldest pair of blue jeans.
People do like their libations hereor
as one resident rather dryly put it,
Millbrook is a thirsty town.
Because of the private nature of the
occupants, breaking into this enclave
can be tricky. First of all, there is the expense
associated with joining the hunt clubs. Pawling
Mountain, Clove Valley and the Mashomack
all have steep initiation fees, rumored to be
upwards of $50,000, not including yearly mem-
bership. Then the cost of the guns themselves is
prohibitive, ranging from $900 for the second-
hand Ceasar Guerini used by Orvis Sandanona
to $175,000 for a Beretta SL10. With the
exception of Orvis, all the other hunt clubs are
private and most have waiting lists of at least
ve years. Clove Valley, where ex-presidents
including Teddy Roosevelt and Bill Clinton
have taken aim, has a waiting list so long that
the only way to get in is if a deceased member
wills his spot to you.
Another thing thats kept the hoi polloi at
bay is the dearth of decent places nearby to
spend the night. There are a couple of bed and
breakfasts in town but you need to go to Pough-
keepsie or even Fishkill for a four-star hotel
experience. David Cruz of Holland & Holland
thinks that the residents prefer it that way. Its
meant to be quaint. Its meant to be kept quiet
and private; they purposefully do not want to
make it into the Hamptons.

quite Brooklyn brownstone and not quite Manhattan glass condos, It
has a unique character of its own. It is attracting a number of families
and Manhattanites and the rental prices are on power with Manhattan.
Recent development, GAIR2 by Two Trees Management is the
hottest and most expensive property in the area with an average of $57
per sq foot. It was named after the original architect Robert Gair, who
built the property in 1901; the building maintains a historic exterior
but an ultra modernized interior. The list of amenities is endless, from
Bosch washer and dryers in every apartment to a golf simulator. In less
than 2 and months, 106 apartments were leased. We wanted to
create something true to the DUMBO area says Asher Abehsera, VP of
Residential Properties at Two Trees Management.
As more people ock to Brooklyn, rental customers are taking lesser
time to make their decision as they understand the market situation.
We are seeing no negotiating on prices, no concessions and only
very large buildings that are doing their initial lease up, paying the
broker fees. Condo owners renting their units out are getting fantastic
numbers. In Williamsburg, anything with a view on the waterfront or in
a building with amenities are seeing fantastic rental numbers. explains
Sarah Burke, Executive Vice President and Director of Sales, Prudential
Douglas Elliman.
According to a report provided by MNS, August 2011, the top 3
expensive rental areas for 2 bedroom apartments were Dumbo,
Brooklyn Heights and Boreum Hill (in that order). The report also
shows that Dumbo, Parkslope and Williamsburg are the top areas in
Brooklyn that saw a steady rise in prices in studio, one bedroom and 2
bedroom apartments.
With the pace of development, super sleek buildings and a relaxed
neighborhood, increasing number of people are nding it feasible to
live in Brooklyn. Brooklyn was a trickle down from Manhattan says
Aguayo. But as vacancy rates fall, Brooklyn has denitely become a
preferred place over the latter.

prestigious neighborhood with rare, deeded beach access.

legendary leviathans of the sky that bore his name, these globe-

College ColleCtion
by MonDiA
Its been said that college isnt for everyone,
well, as true that may be in an academic way,
it certainly doesnt apply to you fashionistas
out there. MonDiA has plenty of colorful
credentials for your fabulous, fashion
forward, peacock self. When we asked our
Italian friends in Milan for fun & affordable,
they really surpassed our expectations.
Interchangeable bracelets, solid steel
construction and 10atm water resistance,
all at under $150 make these quite the
intellectual choice, but your entourage
doesnt need to know that.
