CONCRETE POLES

Duraspun Concrete Power Poles

Unique product
The unique Rocla manufacturing process creates hollow, steel-reinforced concrete poles of great strength and relatively light weight, by spinning the mould at high speed. The Duraspun process removes a significant proportion of water in the concrete mix, which results in a high-density concrete pole with inherently low permeability. The concrete is also steam-cured for high early strength, enabling delivery shortly after manufacture

Advanced Australian technology

A patented process allows the production of high strength poles with tapered sides and embedded reinforcement cages. The manufacturing process also allows poles to be prestressed for ultimate design strength and stiffness. Rocla has been manufacturing spun concrete poles since 1957 and is Australia's largest supplier of this unique product. Manufacturing techniques were developed in Australia and all the equipment designed and produced here by Rocla.

Superior performance
Economical Rocla Duraspun power poles are designed and manufactured to provide a long, trouble-free life. Many years of testing and in-service performance provide a predictable and secure support structure for overhead powerlines.

Low maintenance
Rocla Duraspun power poles are competitively priced compared with other pole alternatives. The inherently durable spun concrete poles require no external protective wrappings or covers. There is no need for internal inspections or for the use of expensive and toxic chemicals to control termites or rot, resulting in minimal or no maintenance expenditure.

Outstanding durability
High-strength, low-permeability concrete produces a highly durable product, even in harsh conditions such as acid-sulphate soils and marine environments. Minimum service life of 50 years is typical. Impervious to termite infestation and rot. Project cost savings can be relied on through extended asset life. In marine environments or in areas of high salinity, the service life of Rocla Duraspun poles can be significantly extended by the addition of corrosion inhibitor in the concrete mix, which protects the steel reinforcement against chlorides. Stainless steel butt plates, epoxy coatings and other physical measures are also available.

Cheap, fast and efficient installation by the direct embedment method in an augured hole. No need for expensive mass concrete footings in most soil conditions. For installation in rock or hard soils, poles can be either bolted directly to exposed bedrock, mounted on a pad footing, or installed using a collared style technique. See below for details. Longer poles can be manufactured in sections and bolted together on site, reducing the mass and length of individual components. In low strength or unstable soils, poles can be mounted on a driven Rocla Duraspun concrete pile, permitting installation in ground conditions that may otherwise require a very large, expensive slab footing or pile cap. Full technical support on installation and embedment is available.

Economical, durable support for power transmission and distribution lines

Rocla Duraspun concrete poles are employed by most Australian electricity authorities for power transmission and distribution. They are ideal for the construction of new power lines and as replacement poles in existing lines. Poles can be purpose-designed to meet specific requirements. A wide range of pole lengths and strength designations are available - from 8.0m to 50.0m and 5kN up to 300kN ultimate tip load. Duraspun power poles are available in two design ranges:

Conventionally Reinforced Concrete

Provides a cost-efficient product, typically suited to shorter length and lower strength poles where deflection is not a primary consideration.

Prestressed Concrete
A more specialized pole designed to limit deflection and maximize performance and durability in longer length poles and where high and sustained loads apply. Typically suited to high voltage transmission poles. All power poles are available in a wide range of lengths and tip strengths to suit most design and construction requirements. Poles over 24 metres in length are manufactured in sections and joined on site using the patented Rocla structural lug jointing system (see Rocla Poles & Piles Handling & Installation Guide).
