T hree pupils have received cash incentives from a man whose grandfather had a deep
interest in their school. Krishna and Tara Goolcharan returned home from Canada to
honour three of the most outstanding pupils of the Palmyra Hindu School, Palmyra, San
Fernando.
The awards went to Lakisha Seon, 11, who scored the highest marks at the school in the
recent Secondary Entrance Assessment. She passed for her first choice secondary school-
St Joseph's Convent, San Fernando. Lakisha received $2,500.
The school's SEA second place pupil, Ryan Bridgelal, 13, received $2,000 while Saman-
tha Abdool, 11, completed the list of awardees with a gift of $1,500. Bridgelal will be at-
tending San Fernando East Secondary School while Abdool passed for Princes Town
Junior Secondary. All three awardees come from similar backgrounds.
The Goolcharan award was started three years ago. Goolcharan, a father of three, said
that his grandfather, Siew Sankar Goolcharan, worked toward the building of the school
at Palmyra. It was built in 1969 and has a school population of 63 with a staff of five teach-
ers. Of the ten pupils who wrote the SEA exam, nine passed.
School principal Rajdai Mahabirsingh said that a large percentage of the pupils come
from single parent homes and the teachers work with them to overcome any problems
they might have at home. She said that the pupils were encouraged to work hard and as-
pire to a life of excellence.
"Once we recognise potential in the children, we begin to work with themin a serious
effort to assist them," Mazhabirsingh said.
Goolcharan promised to keep in touch with the three achievers and look after their
progress at secondary school level.
