Innovation As the world leader in marine coatings, International Paint has a long and successful history of innovation in antifouling and foul release technology and we remain fully committed to research programmes designed to meet the product performance and regulatory requirements of todays vessel operator. As a result of pioneering the concept of Self Polishing Copolymer (SPC) antifoulings in the early 1970s, our overall contribution to the fuel efficiency of the global fleet has been significant. Innovations include: Intersmooth SPC - the first SPC antifoulings. Intersleek Interswift - the first non stick, foul release systems. - the first hybrid SPC systems.

The Environment In the 1980s a number of countries restricted the use of TBT containing antifoulings on smaller vessels following increased environmental concern over the effects of TBT on non target marine organisms, particularly in areas of low water exchange such as coastal estuaries and marinas. Throughout the 1990s the International Maritime Organisations (IMO) Marine Environmental Protection Committee (MEPC) discussed further legislation against the use of TBT based antifoulings resulting in a TBT application ban from 1st January 2003 with a complete prohibition of TBT on ships hulls on 1st January 2008.

(iii) Controlled Depletion Polymer (CDP) - Exponential biocide release rate, gradually slowing over the in service period, typically giving a maximum 36 months lifetime. - Leached layers can be large. - Surface tolerant. - High volume solids (Low VOC ).

Foul Release Technologies: Key Features - Biocides are not used to control fouling. - Ultra smooth, slippery, easy clean surface to which fouling organisms have difficulty attaching. - Extended in service periods (up to 60 months ) are achievable. - Low surface energy (non stick). - Chemically durable. - Excellent colour retention.

Intersleek Foul Release Coating Systems Intersleek is a revolutionary coatings technology which controls fouling without the use of biocides and therefore provides freedom from biocide legislation. Intersleeks ultra smooth, slippery and non stick surface allows control of fuel efficiency, speed and maintenance costs since fouling organisms are typically unable to attach, or have difficulty settling onto the surface. Those organisms which do attach, normally only adhere weakly and can usually be easily removed either by self cleaning in service, careful underwater cleaning or by simple low pressure water washing in the drydock. Intersleek is also chemically durable. There is no film degradation, polishing or other chemical change, so extended (up to 60 months ) drydocking intervals are possible.

Intersmooth SPC TBT Free Self Polishing Copolymer (SPC) Systems Intersmooth SPC coatings are proven, patented, TBT free copper acrylate antifoulings offering excellent fouling control for extended (up to 60 months ) in service periods.

On immersion, Intersmooth SPC antifoulings react with the ions in seawater to produce a thin soluble layer on the surface of the coating. This layer polishes at a predetermined rate, consistently exposing fresh antifouling and maintaining a continuous, controlled release of biocides.

The self polishing copolymer characteristics of Intersmooth SPC technology result from a controlled hydrolysis mechanism which mirrors TBT SPC antifouling action. The release of biocides is sustained throughout the coatings lifetime by chemical control of the leached layer size and composition.

Intersmooth SPC technology has a proven track record on over 1500 vessels worldwide. As confirmed at drydock outturns, equivalent performance levels are achieved in service for vessels coated with Intersmooth SPC antifoulings as for those vessels coated with premium grade TBT SPC products.

v The International Dataplan performance monitoring system records the application and performance of coating systems on over 30,000 vessels currently in service. At each drydocking, vessel details, including drydocking interval and coating performance, are recorded. Antifouling coatings are assessed for the presence of fouling, (type, severity and extent) and from this unique database, an antifouling performance rating can be calculated. Depending on in service conditions and specification applied.

Interswift Hybrid SPC/CDP Systems This new, patented TBT free antifouling type is a blend of copper acrylate SPC technology with the rosin based self polishing CDP technology. By carefully combining these two technologies to form a hybrid, it is possible to produce an antifouling which has the CDP benefits of surface tolerance, high volume solids and an attractive cost base, together with the patented copper acrylate SPC attributes of polishing rate control, reduced leached layer size and control of biocide release.

Interspeed Controlled Depletion Polymer (CDP) Systems TBT free, Controlled Depletion Polymer antifoulings rely on a physical dissolution of the paint film to provide the self polishing action. These antifoulings are often referred to as ablative or eroding and rely on the presence of rosin in the coating to provide the physical dissolution at the surface. For additional film toughness and durability, reinforcing resins are also used.

Antifouling product and technology guide

With many different TBT free products and technologies available, it is perhaps not surprising that a degree of confusion may exist as to how they work, what are the differences between them and which ones are the best. In the following pages we outline the four key technology types, explain how they work and provide a reminder of the importance of hull roughness on ship performance. 1) Biocidal Antifoulings a) SPC: Self Polishing Copolymer (SPC) antifoulings release biocides via a hydrolysis reaction of an acrylic polymer with seawater. This is a chemical reaction and only occurs at the surface of the coating. SPC technology combines controlled polishing rate and optimum biocide release with inherent self smoothing for hull roughness control and maximum fuel efficiency. Pioneered by International Paint in the early 1970s, the overall contribution of SPC technology to the fuel efficiency of the global fleet has been significant. Intersmooth SPC Based on patented, copper acrylate technology (metal acrylate), Intersmooth SPC antifoulings have been specifically designed to meet the performance and environmental demands of deep sea and coastal vessel operators. Intersmooth SPC products (available in newbuilding and maintenance grades) provide an equivalent performance level to that achieved by premium TBT SPC products. Q1 Are all metal acrylate TBT free SPC antifoulings the same? A1 No. There are two types of metal acrylate antifoulings. The first type are the copper acrylate (Intersmooth SPC) systems. The second type are the zinc acrylate systems. Although the biocides used in these two antifouling systems are essentially the same with the predominant biocide in both systems Q2 How do silyl acrylate TBT free SPC antifoulings perform compared to copper acrylate TBT free SPC antifoulings? A2 The two most important factors which determine the effectiveness of any biocidal antifouling are:
s s

being copper oxide, copper complexes are more tightly bound and stable in seawater than zinc complexes. In the presence of the copper oxide biocide, zinc acrylate systems (in our experience) may undergo chemical exchange reactions with the copper oxide biocide. Copper acrylate systems do not undergo this exchange. The stability, longevity and performance of the copper acrylate (Intersmooth SPC) systems can therefore be expected to be greater than that of typical zinc acrylate deep sea systems. Copper acrylate antifoulings have now been well proven over more than 12 years with many examples of vessels being free of all macrofouling for five year in service periods.

The type and quantity of biocide(s) in the formulation. The delivery mechanism used to control the release of the biocides.

In both silyl acrylate and copper acrylate (Intersmooth SPC) antifoulings, the biocides are similar, consisting of a high loading of copper oxide with a boosting biocide (or biocides). The most commonly used boosting biocides are the pyrithiones (copper or zinc), both used at a relatively low level. The main difference between the pyrithiones is that copper pyrithione is less soluble in seawater and has been shown to be less effective than zinc pyrithione in cooler (<15C) waters. Silyl acrylate systems which use copper pyrithione as a boosting biocide are therefore generally not as effective in cold waters as the copper acrylate (Intersmooth SPC) systems which use zinc pyrithione.

Intersmooth 460 SPC after 24 months in service.

The delivery mechanisms of the two technologies depend entirely on the reaction of the two polymer systems in seawater. Both systems are based on an acrylic polymer with pendant carboxyl groups to which either a silyl compound or a copper compound are chemically bonded. This bond breaks (hydrolyses) in seawater, rendering the resultant carboxyl polymer soluble, which then provides the self polishing action. The rate of hydrolysis depends on seawater conditions with salinity and temperature being the two most important factors. If the hydrolysis rate is too fast then the paint polishes away too quickly; if the hydrolysis rate is too slow, then not enough biocides are released to prevent fouling. Many silyl acrylate systems contain rosin in order to help control hydrolysis rate and therefore, rather than being true SPC types, they are more comparable to the hybrid types, such as Interswift 655: see below. Copper acrylate antifoulings have now been well proven over more than 12 years with many examples of vessels being free of all macrofouling for five year in service periods. b) Hybrid SPC: Interswift 655 Interswift 655 is a new, patented hybrid TBT free self polishing antifouling incorporating copper acrylate technology. Designed to complement our existing range of TBT free antifouling products, the parents of Interswift 655 are the premium TBT free self polishing copolymer Intersmooth SPC and the controlled depletion polymer Interspeed 340, both of which are well proven technologies with extensive track records. Creating this new hybrid has been possible by carefully combining the patented copper acrylate SPC technology of Intersmooth SPC with the rosin based controlled depletion polymer technology of Interspeed 340. This results in an effective antifouling which has the features of CDP surface tolerance and attractive volume solids content, together with the SPC attributes of polishing rate control, control of biocide release and reduced leached layer size.

c) CDP: Interspeed 340 TBT free, controlled depletion polymer antifoulings rely on a physical dissolution of the paint film to provide the polishing action. CDP antifoulings are also referred to as ablative or eroding and rely on the presence of rosin in the coating to provide the physical dissolution at the surface. For additional film toughness and durability, reinforcing resins are also used. 2) Foul Release Technology: Intersleek 700. Intersleek 700 is a unique, non stick, foul release coating system designed for high activity, deep sea scheduled ships (>15-30 knots). The technology provides an ultra smooth, slippery, easy clean surface with the potential for reductions in average hull roughness through careful application. Intersleek 700 does not use biocides to control fouling and is chemically durable with excellent colour retention. Environmental compliance is assured with freedom from all current and future biocide restrictions. Control of treatment and waste disposal costs for wash water/blasting abrasive at subsequent drydockings are additional benefits of the Intersleek 700 system. Drydock scheduling can be flexible with in service periods of up to five years possible. Intersleek 700 now has a proven, hugely successful (full ship) track record of over 60 vessels, several of which have over 60 months experience in service. Foul Release Linkcoat: Intersleek 717 Intersleek 717 Linkcoat is a pioneering first and technically advanced foul release conversion coating which functions both as a sealer coat for existing TBT SPC antifoulings and as a strong Linkcoat to allow the application of the Intersleek 700 foul release system. For scheduled ship operators whose vessels are currently coated with SPC antifoulings, Intersleek 717 offers a high performance, cost effective conversion route to all of the associated operational and environmental benefits of the Intersleek 700 system without the need for expensive, full reblasting of the underwater hull. Intersleek 717 adds to customer choice and has opened up more attractive and flexible options for the installation of foul release technology at Newbuilding or Maintenance and Repair.

Hull Roughness Whilst silicone based foul release systems are applied smooth and stay smooth in service, when considering alternative biocidal antifouling protection it is worth remembering the basic principles of hull roughness and the effect of increased roughness on ship performance. Hull roughness is defined as the maximum peak to trough height, expressed in microns, for any given length of 50mm along the underwater hull. There are two main types of roughness: biological and physical. Biological roughness is the accumulation of plant or animal growth on ships hulls (fouling). Physical roughness can be attributable to vessel age and design plus the type of coating system used this includes anticorrosive, abrasion resistant and antifouling coatings. Increased physical roughness commonly results from mechanical damage, poor maintenance practice, the build up of old coatings or from the use of a non polishing and smoothing antifouling. Both types of hull roughness, however, will increase frictional resistance or vessel drag resulting in an additional power requirement and increased fuel cost to maintain vessel speed. The economic consequences of hull roughness can be seen in the graph Hull Roughness vs Age of Ship, which relates increasing surface roughness to the percentage increase in power required to maintain speed. TBT free SPC antifoulings are formulated to provide high levels of biological roughness control (fouling) and, through self polishing and smoothing, high levels of physical roughness control. The well proven operational benefits of TBT SPC technology can still be realised through the correct choice of TBT free SPC antifouling.

Intersmooth SPC antifoulings are formulated to control roughness of the hull through self polishing and smoothing. Under normal operating conditions, Intersmooth SPC antifoulings polish at a rate proportional to both the velocity and turbulence of water flow over the surface.

Glossary of Terms/Technology Explained Self Polishing Copolymer (SPC) : The paint polymer or binder system is made soluble in seawater by hydrolysis. This is a controlled chemical reaction and only occurs at the surface of the coating. SPC technology combines controlled polishing rate and optimum biocide release with inherent self smoothing for hull roughness control and maximum fuel efficiency. Leached layers are always thin, <15m (0.6 mils) providing a smooth surface. Self Polishing: The paint polymer or binder system is soluble in seawater. Solubility can be achieved either by a chemical reaction e.g. hydrolysis, as in SPC technology or by the use of Rosin e.g. in CDP technology. Smoothing or Self Smoothing: A controlled reduction in surface roughness of Self Polishing Copolymer antifoulings resulting from the removal of surface peaks. The smoothing benefit from the use of SPC antifoulings should not be confused with a general reduction in hull roughness from abrasive blast cleaning or hydroblasting. Polishing: Polishing is the overall reduction of film thickness. Polishing is a bulk film effect and can occur without smoothing (but not vice versa). Polishing Rate: Film thickness reduction per unit time. For SPC antifoulings, polishing rate is directly proportional to vessel speed. Leached Layer: A biocide depleted spent layer at the surface of the coating. In SPC antifoulings the leached layer is always thin, <15m (0.6 mils), providing a smooth surface. Conversely, CDP leached layers can become very thick, >75m (3 mils), resulting in increased surface roughness plus removal and overcoating difficulties. Leaching Rate: The release of biocide per unit time. There are three technologies or delivery mechanisms available to control biocide release SPC, CDP and a combination of the two, known as hybrid SPC. Controlled Depletion Polymers (CDP): Antifouling with high rosin content enabling self polishing to occur. Antifoulings with low rosin content are referred to as Contact Leaching antifoulings and do not polish. Hybrid SPC: An antifouling with both SPC and CDP features. Rosin: Naturally occurring resin extracted from trees. Rosin is soluble in seawater. Average Hull Roughness (AHR): The mean value of all hull roughness measurements on the underwater hull. Modal Hull Roughness (MHR): The most commonly occurring hull roughness measurement on the underwater hull.

Whilst the Average Hull Roughness (AHR) has slightly increased due to mechanical damage, the roughness distribution has become less widespread, resulting in a smoothing benefit (or roughness reduction).

Hull Roughness Penalty Calculator (HRPC): A calculation tool to compare the cost increase of different antifoulings over time (due to increasing hull roughness) to the initial installation cost. The extra CO2 and SOX emissions, due to the extra fuel used as roughness increases, are also calculated.
