Event Overview
The world today is faced with several challenges like global warming, depletion of natural resources and change in climatic conditions, coupled with high oil prices, making the utilization of renewable energy imperative and crucial. About 16% of global energy consumption comes from renewable or alternative energy, with 10% from traditional biomass and 3.4% from hydroelectricity. According to a recent study, one-third of the world's energy will need to come from solar, wind and other alternative resources. Although India was the first country in the world to have set up a ministry for non-conventional energy resources to identify the use of new renewable energy resources like solar and wind power, its potential hasn't been completely utilised. The renewable energy sector attributes to only 10.63% of the overall energy sector and development in the area of solar and wind energy will determine the future of alternative energy in India. India continues to be one of the leaders in the wind energy sector and ranks as the fifth largest producer of wind energy. With new policies and government support, India is set to be a global leader in this segment. Due its geographical location, India also enjoys high solar insolation making it an ideal place for the development and generation of solar energy with Gujarat and Rajasthan as the hubs.
