%he introduction oI the Choice Based Credit Semester System (CBCSS) by the
Mahatma Gandhi University propelled its aIIiliated colleges towards orienting
students, Iaculty and ministerial staII in the direction oI internalizing the system.
%hereIore, the main aim oI the IQAC Ior the academic year was to adopt new
teaching - learning and evaluation practices that would Iacilitate a gradual switch over
Irom the annual to the CBCSS. Accordingly, it was planned-
1. %o encourage teachers to participate in orientation workshops organized by the
University
2. %o conduct an orientation programme Ior all the teachers under the leadership
oI ProI. A.S. Varghese, Head, Department oI Physics, CMS College, who was
a key proponent oI the CBCSS at the University level
. %o persuade the ministerial staII to attend orientation sessions arranged by the
M.G. University and Government Departments.

%he vision oI the institution is embodied in its motto '%hy Word is %ruth. %he main
objective oI the institution is to impart liberal education without any discrimination.
%he activities oI the academic year that reIlect the institutional goals are as Iollows:
1. Faculty members took up key positions at the University level, during the
course oI redesigning the undergraduate curriculum and its periodic review
based on real time needs.
2. Students were oriented and guided well in the direction oI career
opportunities.
In view oI their holistic development, students were exposed to counseling and
value based education through tutorials, personality development sessions and
the services oI in-house counselor. %he chapel within the campus is open Ior
devotions and silent meditation.

During the year under review no new academic programmes were initiated

Curriculum is provided and updated by parent University (Mahatma Gandhi
University, Kottayam, Kerala.) Faculty members use InIormation and Communication
%echnology integrated teaching methods as well as modern audio-visual methods Ior
curricular transactions.
2009 `10 is the implementation year oI the Choice based Course Credit Semester
System (CBCSS), as per directive oI the University. Mahatma Gandhi University


made use oI the services and expertise oI many teachers oI CMS College holding key
positions in various University Boards. (The details are given in Appendix I)
Specific Involvement in the Restructuring Process
%he restructuring process oI a major number oI Undergraduate programs in the Arts,
Science and Commerce streams oI the Mahatma Gandhi University was with the
active participation oI the teachers Irom this college. %he involvement oI the
institution and teachers can be seen at Iour levels:
Piloting
In 1998, the Department oI Malayalam designed and launched, with the approval oI
the University, the Model II Malayalam Language and Literature course Ior
Undergraduates. With its Ieatures oI being module based, semester structured and I%
oriented, it served as the sole model within the University Ior initiating the
restructured programmes.
Resource Personnel
Prof A S Varghese (Dept. oI Physics) was a person with key involvement in the
restructuring process. His contributions include levels such as:

preparing the syllabi Ior three papers in the restructured programme: General
Methodology and Perspectives; Biodiversity in modern Systematics; and
Environmental Biology, %oxicology and Disaster Management.
r Miriam Mani (Dept. oI Family and Community Science) was member oI Core
Committee Ior restructuring the syllabus oI Family and Community Science at the B
Sc CBCSS level, and designed syllabi Ior two papers Dynamics oI Extension; and
Mass Communication and Journalism.
r Asha Mathew and Prof Amrutha Rinu Abraham jointly prepared the syllabi
oI the papers Sociology oI Crime & Sociology oI %ourism.
Prof I Mary prepared the syllabi Ior the paper Social Anthropology Ior CBCSS B.A
Sociology.
r Tomy Mathew (Dept. oI Commerce) designed the syllabi Ior InIormation

A workshop on 'Restructuring oI Undergraduate Courses into Semester and Credit
System was conducted on 10 June 2009 Ior all teachers oI the college. ProI. A S
Varghese, Dept. oI Physics, led the sessions.

%he Departments oI Zoology, Botany and Chemistry initiated a CertiIicate course in
Apiculture, aiming at developing the same as an Add-On programme Ior
undergraduate students.

Mahatma Gandhi University conducts semester-end and year-end examinations;
examination reIorms are also made by the University Irom time to time. In the
college, model examinations were conducted in the same pattern as that oI university
examinations in order to Iamiliarize the students with the exam pattern.
Grading system was successIully implemented Ior First year Undergraduate
programs. %ests Ior internal evaluation are conducted in a totally decentralized
method. Question setting, printing, invigilation and evaluation are all carried out by
the Departments concerned.
%he Department oI Botany implemented a system oI Quick Review and Surprise
%ests as part oI internal assessment. %his was proven successIul in improving the
level oI student alertness in classroom learning, as a technique oI Iormative
evaluation.

Every post-graduate Department conducts coaching Ior NE% / GA%E. OI special
mention is the Physics Gurukulam, under the initiative oI Dr. Rajan K John. %his is a
residential endeavor by the Department oI Physics, where students are oIIered in-
house training Iree oI cost, aiming at NE%, SLE%, GA%E and JES% exams. %he

In connection with the implementation oI the CBCSS system, a one day workshop
was conducted Ior the entire Iaculty oI the college, to Iamiliarize them with the
aspects oI the new system.
%he College encourages Iaculty members to attend seminars and conIerences and they
are given duty leave Ior attending FDPs as per the Government and University
regulations.
%he Dept. oI English assisted the Board oI Studies in English to organize an
Orientation Programme Ior English %eachers in association with the Cambridge
University Publishers Ior two days (rd and 4th August 2009).

invention comprises medicine derived Irom phytoactive compounds, pharmaceutically
acceptable compositions comprising extract and active ingredients eIIective Ior inhibiting
and controlling nucleation and growth oI cholesterol crystals, use oI the said medicine in
treatment oI diseases or disorders caused due to increase in cholesterol crystals
deposition including gall stones, coronary heart diseases, renal dysIunction, disorders.
%he application was Iiled at the patent oIIice in Chennai on 16 July 2008, and publication
regarding this was made on 22 January 2010.
