Background Information:

The student I will be doing my case study on is Colby Black. Colby was born on July 10, 2005, making him 5 years and 6 months old when I began this study. He is a white male. Colby is in Kindergarten and is a student in my classroom. Colby lives with his mother and step-father. He does see his father every other weekend but I have never met him. He has an older sister that is 7 years old and in 1st grade, and twin brothers that are 4 years old. Colbys interests are playing outside, playing with tractors and helping his Grandpa work on the family farm. He says his favorite books are _________________________. Colbys attitude about reading as it pertains to him reading sight words and simple 3-letter words are that it is hard for him. His attitude about writing is miserable. He cries over every handwriting or creative writing task he is asked to do. Colby really enjoys school in every way except writing. As I worked one onone with Colby and his confidence built up day by day, the crying over writing activities stopped. Colby has only attended one school and did not attend pre-school of any type, he stayed home with his mother up until entering Kindergarten last August. His attendance has been an issue all year as he has asthma attacks and even spent a week in Vanderbilt Childrens Hospital with a collapsed lung while I was tutoring him. In addition to his attendance problem, he comes to school either right at 8am or later every day. He has been turned in to the school systems Attendance Supervisor for these problems. Colby is a very wellbehaved child who has not ever been in any kind of trouble at school. He is extremely quiet and shy. Colby was given a PreKindergarten screening in May of 2010 and based on his performance on that screening, his mother was advised to hold

him out of school for a year and enroll him for the 2011-2012 school year when he would enter Kindergarten as a 6-year-old. Another factor in that recommendation was that Colby was carried into school and had to be pulled off of his mothers hip for the first week of school. His sister had also had maturity issues and was retained in Kindergarten. And his mothers decision to send Colby on to school this year was based on the fact that she wanted him to treat this year like a year of pre-school and that she knew going in to the year that he would be retained. Colbys shyness and lack of exposure to letters and books lead to him qualifying for intervention services based on his beginning of the year Brigance Screening score (this test has given the first week of school). He has remained in intervention classes based on his scores on the DIBELS test that is administered at my school three times a year. Colby was also placed in my inclusion classroom as a result of his Brigance score. The inclusion classroom has a smaller class size and more time with a teacher assistant to provide the students in that classroom more one-on-one individualized instruction.
