Since The Jet is the most popular of all Ossekeag characters and I do mean characters, I will do a little update. As you know The Jet is big but also very sensitive!! And its not just his sensitive personality, he also happens to have very sensitive skin. Last year during the summer, he developed a nasty rash that spread throughout much of his belly area. Two weeks of pills and he was as good as gold!! This year he didnt get sensitive until October, so it was back to the vet and another round of pills!! However, during the visit with the vet, there was another disturbing find ... in a matter of months, it appears that The Jet had gained five pounds. The Jet is also very sensitive to two months of unlimited access to apples!! Shortly after his vet visit, The Jet turns around and suddenly becomes sensitive to his pills!! After 28 rounds of pills last year and seven rounds of pills this year, he started leaving pills uneaten in his food dish!! So I immediately switch strategies and started giving him the pills first. This wasnt working really well, so I sprinkled a small amount of kibble on top for inspiration and he quickly learned that the only way to get a full meal was for those pills to disappear. He has now completed this round of medication and is well on the road to recovering from his sensitivities. Time will tell if an apple free diet will also bring a turn around to his weight gain!! The only other issue that The Jet is sensitive to is meal time!! He normally has breakfast around 7:30 and supper around 5:15. There is some variation to this on occasion, but it is pretty routine for him to eat at these times. Without fail, whenever, he thinks that a meal is due, he starts to get bouncy. All 90 + pounds starts to wiggle, squirm and jump about without any outside assistance. On occasion, however, The Jets idea of when mealtime should be and when I think it should be are sometimes quite different. Faced with the fact that I am totally ignoring him, he finally settles down, but will follow me the instant that I make any move whatsoever. When I am sitting still, The Jet watches me with an intensity that seems to say, Do you want to feed me or would you prefer to be my next meal??. Unfortunately for The Jet I am not even a tiny bit sensitive!!

The Petitcodiac Watershed Alliance is a non-profit organization that monitors environmental conditions in the Petitcodiac River and its tributaries. We are currently in the process of updating our Watershed Management Plan which will guide us in our monitoring and restoration work for the next five years. Awards to two District 6 teachers were recently presented at the Remember When conference for Physical Education Specialists held in Riverview, NB. New Brunswick Physical Education Society Physical Education Teacher Career Award is given to a physical education specialist who has made a significant contribution to the field of Physical Education throughout their career, promoting the core values of Physical Education, physical activity and healthy living within the school community. Ms. Brenda Leask is the recipient of the NBPES District Physical Education Teacher Career Award. Ms. Leask began her teaching career at Fredericton High School, moving to Sussex Elementary School in 1980. New Brunswick Physical Education Society District Physical Education Teacher of the Year Award is given to a physical education specialist who has made a significant contribution to the field of Physical Education within their district. Gear up for Christmas with Backstage Music!

The Annual Bake Sale & Auction at St. Johns Anglican Church in Salisbury will be held on Thursday, November 24th. The day will begin with the Bake Sale starting at 7:00pm, followed by the Auction. Light refreshments will be provided. 332 Belleisle Creek Seniors will be holding Card Parties at the Belleisle Creek Hall on Saturday afternoons starting at 1:30pm. All welcome. 513 In September, Bridging New Waters 4-H club met and elected their officers for the clubs council this coming year. Kelsey Jack is president, Denise Jack is vice president, Lanysha Johnston is secretary and Grace Stairs is treasurer. Projects the club is offering this year are Great Outdoors, Adopt a Grandparent, Quilting, Cross-stitching, Smart Sitter babysitting course, Landscaping & Gardening, Crafts and Reading. Projects are completed each year and displayed on Achievement Day to be judged. Throughout the year, its members gain experience with public speaking, have opportunities to attend national conferences and even exchange trips across Canada. Group activities have included hiking and snowshoeing. Last year the club went whale watching. In addition to working on projects, this club takes part in different service projects in our community and helps raise money for those less fortunate across the globe. The Petitcodiac Public Library will hold an Adopt-A-Book program during the months of November and December. The Adopt-A-Book concept is quite simple; the library board and staff come up with a list of titles that they would like to see added to the collection. A variety of books will be available, with prices ranging from $6 to $30. The community is then encouraged to pick an item from the list and purchase it on the librarys behalf. Each adopted item will have a commemorative bookplate added to it, letting everyone know who adopted that particular book. As a registered charity, the Petitcodiac Public Library will issue a tax receipt to the donor for each adoption. Brittany Armstrong of Newtown (Sussex) has been selected by an independent jury to receive a Communications, Energy and paperworkers Union of Canada Scholarship. Brittany is the daughter of Mark Armstrong, a member of CEP Local 49-N (NY thermal). The criteria to select the winners are academic achievements and a 2,000 word essay on What the Labour Movement Means to Me. Every year CEP awards 12 scholarships of $2,000 each across Canada. Three are awarded n the Atlantic region. Brittany will be studying at Eastern College in NB as a Veterinarian Administrative Assistant. 331

The event and donations raised over $4,000 to the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation in support of The Give 2011 for Stem Cell Therapy. Sussex Middle School celebrated a very successful Terry Fox Fundraising Campaign, raising $3,749.50 for cancer research, beating last years total of $2843. The Terry Fox Spirit Committee kicked off the campaign on September 15th, and wrapped up on October 20th. Fundraising activities included: $1 sneakers for the Wall of Hope, grocery packing at Sobeys, Terry Fox Benefit Show (pm), Terry Fox pledge sheets, and a Terry Fox Spirit Day. A special thank you to Mark Belliveau, of Subway Restaurant, for donating a 6 foot sub, used as a prize incentive for a class competition. Congratulations to 8E, Mme LeBlancs class, for being the top fundraising class. 8G, M. Turnbulls class, also made a huge contribution. On September 28th, students, staff, and Lynn McGinn, of Terry Fox Foundation Provincial Director for NB and PEI, participated in a very successful school wide Terry Fox Walk/ Roll Day, organized by Ms. Doherty. Terry said: If youve given a dollar, you are part of the Marathon of Hope. If you have bought a sneaker, you are part of the SMS Wall of Hope. The Wall of Hope Committee wanted to sell one sneaker to every member of the SMS community (students and staff ). The goal was to have 598 sneakers on the Wall of Hope. The Wall of Hope 2011 proudly displays 610 sneakers = $ 610 for the Terry Fox Foundation (cancer research). This is quite an accomplishment. Hats off to the committee for their enthusiasm and perseverance! For a number of years, Sussex Christian School has partnered with the Farm Credit Corporation in their annual fall Drive Away Hunger campaign. Students from Junior Kindergarten through Grade 12 were encouraged to fill a grocery bag with items to help stock the shelves at the local Sussex Sharing Club. Staff from the Farm Credit Corporation arrived on Thursday, October 13th with a big tractor and wagon to collect the groceries. Students lined up to have all the bags weighed in and Sussex Christian School weighed in about 925 pounds of groceries this year. As a follow up, five members from the high school leadership core went to the Sharing Club and helped sort the bags that came in, not only those collected at SCS, but from the other area schools that participated in the program. Items were sorted, checked for expiry dates, then placed on the shelves of the Sharing Club. 519

On October 4, 2011 Donnie and Dianne Cameron renewed their 20th Wedding Anniversary vows on the Carnival Dream Cruise Ship in Central America. Captain Massimo Marino officiated the renewal of the vows which were performed in front of their two children, Donald and Candace and Donald's guest Corinne Cole. The happy couple posed for pictures on the glass stairway then proceeded outside to the panorama deck. They enjoyed champagne and wedding cake later that evening in their private dining room.

Bethany Bible College will hold its annual community Christmas Concert on Sunday, December 4th. Christmas at the College will be presented at 3:00 & 7:00pm in the Saunders Irving Chapel located on Summit Avenue in Sussex. Presenting for its fourth year, Christmas at the College will feature the Bethany Bible College Chorale and Chamber Choir, Sussex Middle School Choir, Sussex Corner Elementary School Honour Choir, vocalist Cyril MacNeil, harpist Jean ODonnell, and a Sussex Community Mass Choir. In the backdrop of an eighteen-foot Christmas tree, lights, and decorations, the audience will enjoy singing Christmas carols by candlelight. Although there is no admission charge for the event, everyone is encouraged to bring non-perishable food items, baby supplies, and toiletry items for men and women. The Town of Sussex, a finalist in the 3,0017,500 population category of the 2011 National Edition of Communities in Bloom, received a 4 Bloom rating and a special mention for OConnell Park Rejuvenation. Following their evaluation of the community, volunteer judges Diane Clasen (Raleigh, North Carolina,USA) and Gerry Teahen (St. Marys, ON) wrote: The Town of Sussex is Nestled in a beautiful valley; rich, fertile farmland drew early settlers creating a thriving farming economy making it regional service centre. Residents take great pride in their community. The recent OConnell Park Rejuvenation is a prime example of this is. The Communities in Bloom Committee and the Town collaborated to clean-up and redesign the park, even reinstating an old walking trail. In addition, the Sussex Rotary Club adopted a large area in the center of the park and planted a stunning flower bed depicting the Rotary Wheel. A final touch, the restoration of the park entrance is an invitation to passerbys. OConnell Park has once again become a community showcase. 325

The 61st annual Kiwanis Auction was successfully held October 28th & 29th with over 200 items being auctioned off, everything, including the kitchen taps was up for sale to the highest bidder. The auction raised almost $9,000 which will be used to fund the startup for the Fundy Search & Rescue Life Saver Program, help fund the Sussex Recreation Centre and other community projects. We would like to thank all who participated in the auction, in particular, Brian & Jo-Ann McCullum and Bob Linden, providers of auction services; the Sussex Aktion Club of Sussex, who provided showcasing and delivery of items to winning bidders; the Sussex Key Club, who provided canteens services for the auction; The Sussex and Hampton Herald and last but not least the businesses of Sussex and surrounding areas who provided the articles for auction. We are building a Horse Rescue program and delivering suicide prevention and empowerment camps for youth province wide. There will be horse wisdom workshops available for personal development, corporate development, counselling and therapy as well. Youth Programs: Earth Spirit Horse Rescue will offer incredible opportunities to youth! The results of our Pilot Program have proven to be powerful and long-lasting. Youth learn about respect, emotional intelligence & compassion; develop selfconfidence & communication skills; and learn how to set & respect healthy boundaries. Part of awarded funding will establish a Horse Wisdom Scholarship Fund, enabling youth from all backgrounds, around our province, equal opportunity to participate in these life-changing experiences! The grand-granddaughter started kindergarten this fall and is loving it. It is amazing how much a five year old can learn in a mere two months! And how eagerly she approaches any and every learning opportunity. Every business or road sign is a reading opportunity, every speed sign a chance to show how well she knows her numbers, and every conversation a chance to add new words to her vocabulary. She is like a giant sponge soaking up words and numbers and concepts. Love of learning is one of the most important gifts we can give our children. So often we see kids hate going to school at a very young age. What a loss. What have we done to stifle that joy in learning and mastering new things? Learning should not be a chore, but an adventure, an opening of new doors to see where they lead and what exciting places they can take us. It is awesome to see little faces light up at realizing they can indeed sound out that word and read that sentence. To feel the energy that flows from those new found abilities. May it continue for the rest of their lives. Parents are the first teachers (even, maybe especially, when they dont realize they are teaching) and so much depends on those first five years spent at home. That is when children gain their fundamental attitudes toward life and learning. But the teachers and learning environment set by their first formal school experiences are so important at setting the tone of their whole educational experience. I loved learning (although not always the educational experience), and seeing my granddaughter thrilled at each new school day is a joy. Thank you to all of the teachers and educators to whom we entrust those little ones each school day. Most of what I really need to know about how to live, what to do, and how to be, I learned in kindergarten. . . .
