THE NEXT BIG THING?

PERIOPRUV
Periopruv is a new diagnostic device which identi es periodontal disease and infection in less than 10 minutes. Periodontal infection is linked to potential increased risk of heart attack or stroke as well as diabetes, low birth weights and premature birth. As well as links to systemic diseases, poor oral hygiene and periodontitis leads to poor long-term results for restorative dentistry and increased chance of peri-implantitis for implant patients. e manufacturer - US rm Revdia - says Periopruv is the worlds rst point of care test of its type. Optident is the distributor for the UK market.

Optident is bringing a brand new device to the UK for early detection of periodontal disease and infection
has actually started to develop, meaning corrective treatments may need to be more intensive and for a longer period.

HOW IT WORKS
Using patented technology, a sample of saliva is taken on an absorbent sampler. is is then transferred to a PerioPruv lateral ow immunoassay test cartridge which will detect the antibodies produced in the presence of the two key bacteria Aggregatibacter Actinomycetemcomitans (Aa) and Porphyromonas Gingivalis (Pg). If the bacteria are detected, the Periopruv unit displays coloured lines in the indicator. As the bacteria can be detected before they lead to serious infection, necessary treatment can be prescribed to create a healthier oral environment. As part of a regular check up, Periopruv can give you and your patients peace of mind that their oral hygiene and in turn, their overall oral health, is good. Periopruv is a great patient motivator as it gives the patient the opportunity to see and measure the improvement without long delays. A natural diagnosis system, Periopruv

only detects the bodys natural defence mechanisms. If the body is not under attack from the bacterial pathogens that cause periodontitis it simply will not produce the proteins in any high levels to be detected by Periopruv.

DEFINITIVE TEST
Periopruv can identify and prove active periodontitis and also the risk of periodontitis. Importantly, this innovative test procedure can be used to motivate patients to maintain healthy oral hygiene. Until recently, it has been relatively di cult to detect the activity of the bacteria and the pathogens they produce that lead to periodontal infection. Most tests currently are predictive and not de nitive. Tests have involved salivary samples being taken and sent to a laboratory, which takes time and can be relatively expensive and results in multiple patient visits. O en the test results can only identify the problem a er the periodontal disease
