Critical Practice
Theorists and Creativity
Martin McQuillan, Kingston University, UK
No other text directly addresses the question of theorists and philosophers who are also makers and practitioners Existing books explaining the idea of practice-led research do not work on the same level of theoretical sophistication and are not critical of it as a discursive formation Martin McQuillan is uniquely placed to write this book having been Head of the School of Fine Art and the Pro-Dean for Research at the UKs largest creative arts faculty at the University of Leeds, as well as an internationally known critical theorist This book considers the relationship between theory and practice in creative acts. In particular it addresses the work of theorists who also create and makers who have an avowed relation to theory. McQuillan offers a critical interrogation of the idea of practice-led research, considering the question of the emergence of a cultural space in which philosophy, theory, history and practice are becoming indistinguishable. Arab Women in Arab News

Old Stereotypes and New Media
Amal Al-Malki, Carnegie Mellon University, Qatar, UAE, and David Kaufer and Suguru Ishizaki, Carnegie Mellon University, USA
The first study carried out from the Arab world of Arab women in the media Western studies continue to portray the 200-year-old stereotype of Arab women as passive and oppressed. This is a much needed study revealing the reality Research conducted on a large sample of 22 months of news summaries from 103 Arab media sources belonging to 22 Arab countries Amal Al-Malki is the only Qatari born academic with a permanent position in a university in Qatar This book addresses east-west understandings of Arab women as portrayed through translated media. From 1800, the dominant western stereotype of Arab women depicts them as passive and oppressed. For 30 years social science media research in the west has argued that media images of Arab women reinforce this 200-year-old stereotype. This new book counters Western stereotypes through extensive primary research using Arab media sources. Contents

Performative Revolution in Egypt

An Essay in Cultural Power
Jeffrey C. Alexander, Yale University, USA
The first serious book by a major Western scholar on the Egyptian revolution Alexander is one of the top sociologists in the USA Short, pithy and highly accessible this book is an intervention into the public debate, as well as a serious contribution that will be read by students and scholars Alexanders previous book was The Performance of Politics: Obamas Victory and the Democratic Struggle for Power (2010) which received widespread media coverage The author has given key-note addresses at international conferences on the subject of this book and has appeared on BBC Radio 4's Thinking Allowed. More is planned to coincide with publication in the Autumn including a symposium at Goldsmiths College, University of London, and a lecture tour in Egypt Why was Egypts Spring revolution so compelling and so effective? This brilliant essay uncovers the narrative of the revolution as a theatrical performance enacted on Tahrir Square with a moral purpose, but also a communicative logic in demonstrating what a civil, egalitarian society might look like.

Bioscience and the Good Life

Iain Brassington, University of Manchester, UK
A friendly critique of the position generally termed bioscientific optimism Bioethics has a tendency to divide into pro- and anti-enhancement camps. This work opens up the richness and complexity of debate that could be had by drawing on philosophical resources largely neglected hitherto Part of the Science, Ethics and Society series edited by Sir John Sulston and John Harris Bioscience and the Good Life explores the relationship between bioscience and 'the good life', drawing from the idea that the point of biomedical research is unavoidably tied to the idea of the good life. Meanings of Designed Spaces

Social, Cultural and Philosophical Essays about Spaces, People and the Designed World
Edited by Tiiu Poldma, University of Montreal, Canada
Organized around three major themes: design as knowledge and as a foundation, changing paradigms and our stance both as a designer and as someone who impacts on the material world with the choices that they make and issues of ethics and social responsibility in both theory and practice Readings for student participation in discussion and to perform exercises Fundamental questions to be asked in this book include: What are the various contexts for meanings in interior design? What are meanings in different aspects of the interior design of spaces? How do interiors influence our social, cultural and psychological ways of being? How can students and teachers examine various meanings through the topics offered in the book? How can we examine issues and questions by debating and critically examining theory with the idea of understanding how this then becomes part of interior design processes and practices? Poldma and the contributors explore diverse types of spaces, what constitutes designed space and what this means for technology, business, design thinking and doing, ethics, culture, sustainability and society. This book will encourage debate, conversation and discussion. For a list of contents visit: www.fairchildbooks.com.

EDUCATION

Innovation in Education
A Million Tiny Revolutions
Charles Leadbeater, Advisor to the Department for Education's Innovation Unit, UK
Offers new approaches to scaling up excellent innovations in the field of education Well illustrated High profile author Innovation is a risky and difficult activity, fraught with false starts and failures, as ideas get turned into programmes, products and services. The task of taking promising ideas to a large scale is even more daunting than turning that idea into a prototype. Education is littered with promising but smallscale innovations that remain trapped on the locations where they were first developed. That is why these high impact social innovators matter so much. They can help us understand how to spread change even in apparently hostile conditions, with few resources, and sometimes in the face of opposition from entrenched interests. This book is about why these revolutions matter, what makes them possible and how we can make many more happen, in their tens of millions to give more young people the chance to learn and to change their lives for the better.
