(Why med ordered) Contraindications/warnings/interactions
binds to beta 2 adrenergic receptors in airway smooth muscle,
leading to activation of adenyl cyclase and increased levels of
cAMP. Increases in cAMP kinases, which inhibit the
phosphorylation of myosin and decrease intracellular calcium, Contraindicated in hypersensitivity to adrenergic amines.
Decreased calcium relaxes smooth muscle airways with subsequent
bronchodilation. Used as a bronchodilator.
Use cautiously in cardiac disease, HTN, hyperthyroidism,
diabetes, and seizure disorders. The risk of hypokalemia is
increased with concurrent use of potassium-losing diuretics.
Use with caffeine-containing herbs (tea) increases stimulant
effect.
