SUBJECT INTRODUCTION
Operations Research has enhanced organizations and experiences all around us. For example crew scheduling, railway timetabling, chip design, frequency assignment are just a few of the numerous day to day tasks in our modern society. Operations Research is unique and powerful since it uses advanced tools from Mathematics to provide analytical power that no ordinary software can deliver. It is also an indispensable tool for all students who are interested in pursuing their career in management related courses. This book entitled Computer Based Optimization Methods (Applied OR) provides the reader a comprehensive idea about Operations Research. The book focuses on the problem solving techniques through self learning. Each unit in this book is written in a precise and rigorous manner to motivate the reader. The book is well-structured, practical and easy to use as a self-study book. This book is divided into 10 units. The essence of each unit is given below: Unit 1: Important ideas from Operations Research are discussed here. This unit introduces the concept of Mathematical modeling which is used to analyze complex situations and build more productive systems. Unit 2: Linear programming and the different ways of solving a Linear Programming problem, constructing a Linear programming model etc. are discussed here. Unit 3: Simplex algorithm is introduced. Some C/C++ programs are also included. Unit 4: The transportation problem is introduced with clear cut examples to illustrate the different techniques.

Unit 5: Some standard techniques used to solve an assignment problem is discussed and explained in a simple way. Unit 6: In this unit the concept of project scheduling with different methods and networks like: Critical path method etc. is discussed in a simple manner. Unit 7: The concept of Queues and their different applications is discussed here with good examples. The different terms connected with queuing theory is explained in a simple manner. Unit 8: In this unit the integer-programming problem is introduced and different techniques to handle it are illustrated. The difference between integer program problem and linear programming problem is discussed. Unit 9: In this unit the different competitive situations and strategies are discussed one by one. The different methods of finding solutions to game theory problems is studied in a simple manner. Unit 10: The different simulation techniques used to simulate real life problems is discussed and solved with different kinds of examples.
