Organisational psychology offers a wealth of approaches and solutions for addressing workplace health and safety. dr Peter Langford is an Honorary associate of Macquarie University, and was previously a Senior Lecturer in Organisational Psychology before moving to a full time role as Director of Voice Project, a research and consulting company based at Macquarie University. Dr Peter Langford will discuss the impact of culture and leadership upon safety performance. Questions and Discussion Beyond Behavioural Based Safety

In this session, Organisational Psychologist Dr Rod Gutierrez identifies the point at which behavioural based safety interventions fail to extend performance improvement and offers the argument that the discipline of psychology is instrumental to achieving stronger, more sustainable results. Dr Rod Gutierrez will explore a selection of other psychological constructs that can be readily applied with the aim of improving safety performance. Delegates can expect to gain an understanding of: How we can influence others by accessing attitudes and beliefs about safety at the thinking and feeling level not merely through directing their actions The role of individual risk perception, decision making and situational awareness The importance of social influence, both between and within groups of people in the workplace How viewing the development of cultures as sets of shared belief systems at the macro level provides fertile ground for safety application and intervention Why do people change? Improved safety is indeed a change process, so the application of models of individual and group change provides perhaps the greatest insight that psychology has to offer to the safety community

Workshops 20 October 2011

WORKSHOP A From Compliance to Commitment
9.00 - 12.30 This session will discuss how, with the understanding of some basic psychology, we can sustain safety longer term, so that it becomes part of the culture and part of the way we do everyday business. This cannot be achieved by individuals alone we need to be able to engage the whole workforce in thinking, talking and acting safely. This can be described in management theory terms as engagement. The key to sustainable engagement with safety is to explore our own internal drivers/influences and how staff perceive our safety behaviour. This workshop involves discussion, guided learning and consideration of a case study. By the end, participants will be able to: Define motivation Describe the difference between internal and external motivation Explain the importance of moving from compliance to commitment Describe ways to motivate self and engage others Practice giving timely feedback

All organisations seek to operate in a zero harm work environment. It is possible to achieve zero harm only when workers and their organisations share the same values and attitudes towards safety. In addition to exploring general aspects of safety in the workplace, this conference looks specifically into the psychological aspects of achieving safety in organisations through case studies and analysis of different organisations varying programs, policies, values and attitudes relating to safety in the workplace. The dynamics of personality, attitude, motivation and mindfulness are among key issues examined. Through developing a well rounded understanding of these critical issues surrounding the psychology of safety, business leaders will be better equipped to manage risk taking and improve overall safety performance in their organisations. This will also be an ideal opportunity for professionals, managers and employees who are seeking to promote safety culture in the workplace to share their knowledge and successful strategies with other like-minded individuals. Delegates will also the have opportunity to conduct in-depth discussion and develop their working relationships and networks.
