Pilgrims and Thanksgiving

As we prepare for the wonderful time of Thanksgiving, we remember those Pilgrims who came to our country and established the tradition. They were at Scrooby in England in a congregation of Separatists. In 1608, in order to escape persecution they fled to Holland, where there was more religious liberty than in England. They and other latter refugees knew that if they stayed there that their children would become Dutchmen. So they decided to go to America and land in New Jersey, but instead they settled in Cape Cod. More than half of their number, including Governor Carver, died in that first cold winter. They were not landed aristocrats, but were farmers, merchants, yeomen, hired hands, and servants. Six were homeless orphaned children picked off the streets of London. Our heritage did not begin in a palace, but in log cabins in a wilderness. What would those early Pilgrims think of our modern lifestyle and celebration of Thanksgiving? One of the few things that we will have in common with them is that bowl of popcorn which was introduced by the Indians (Native Americans). They would be shocked if they walked into one of our modern supermarkets in November. A pilgrim woman would hardly believe her eyes if she went into Publix and saw a plump turkey. All clean, drawn, perhaps even stuffed, and plastic wrapped in the meat cabinet; a far cry from her wild boney forest bird. She would be shocked at the rows of processed vegetables and fresh produce, as well as the frozen pumpkin pie waiting to be popped into an oven. They were of hardy stock, used to hard manual labor and great sacrifice. Frankly, Im grateful for our conveniences. The primary motive for the Pilgrims first Thanksgiving was to offer profound thanks to God for the crops which had flourished from their first spring planting in the new world. The main ingredients of that first Thanksgiving dinner were faith and gratitude, but these are often missing in our holidays. Our celebrations are often savorless and meaningless compared to theirs. We may have the fixins, but not the faith. In the midst of our great wealth and comfort, we have forgotten how to be grateful and have prospered too fast for our souls. The Pilgrims were somehow able to sit down with the Native Americans, a strong indictment of the racial tension and stereotyping which continues to stifle dialogue and unity in modern America. Most importantly, they knew it was God who had given them that land, liberty, and provision. Today we do not thank the government, or mother nature, but only God. May all of us say this Thanksgiving season: I will give thanks to You, O Lord, among the peoples, and I will sing praises to You among the nations. For Your lovingkindness is great above the Heavens, and Your truth reaches to the skies (Psalm 108:3, 4). Actually, we have to become Separatists from the worlds values to give such thanks and praise.

Lottie Moon Christmas Offering

She was a businesswoman in Kabul, Afghanistan. She was also a mom and wife, married to a man with a prestigious government job. Then the Taliban showed up. They mercilessly killed her husband. Her children were taken from her. Shirin eventually left Afghanistan, joining thousands of other refugees migrating through Iran, Turkey and Greece toward the hope of a better life. Thanks to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, Shirin found a refugee center in Europe run by Southern Baptist workers. The center provides showers, meals and groceries to 275 people a week. Each refugees story is unique, yet all share common threads. Shirin wants freedom to live as she chooses. She wants

Refugees find Jesus

rest from the battles that have shredded her home and her family. She wants respect as a Hazara, a marginalized minority in Afghanistan. She is also spiritually hungry. Southern Baptist workers find that many refugees like Shirin are ready to hear the news that Jesus loves them. Many have not had the opportunity, living in places where the Gospel message is not welcomed. A Persian pastor who was once a refugee himself speaks of the hope Shirins looking for. Jesus made it possible for people to run into the arms of God, the pastor explains. Jesus came to give life, not war.

KidzTown Worship
Each week at KidzTown, our children in 1st through 4th grades have the opportunity to worship the Lord Kid Style. We have a great time studying His Word, singing His praises, and seeking His will. With songs, skits, and games, the lessons learned each day are enforced. For the next eight weeks, we will be looking at the great detective stories of the Bible and learning the lessons that God has for each of us. Your child will not want to miss this weeks excitement and mystery as we look at the mystery of the floating axe head. KidzTown meets Saturday at 6:00 p.m. or Sunday at 9:30 a.m. in Room DC120.
