The Eastern Comd had to def a frontage of ______ miles excl 500 miles of coast line with the aval resources. If we consider the resources as 5 divs even then the frontage comes to 500 miles for each div which is a very large frontage. Thus fol options were aval to Eastern Comd:Option 1.To depl on extended frontages with str pts and fortresses. Option 2.To depl in depth with reasonably lesser frontages and give up space w/o fighting. Option 3.To depl in sel secs along the frontiers and in remaining in depth. Keeping in view the perceived threat and orders from GHQ Eastern Comd decided to adopt option 1. Another reason for doing so was the fear that in case option 2 or 3 is adopted the exact depl of tps will be comm, to en by Mukti Bahini thus creating precarious sit. Prep Mnvr also known as Battle Of Salients was conducted from 20 Nov to 3 Dec, in which Indian Army attk ____ salients. During Prep Mnvr, Muktis staged subversive activities in rear areas while Indian forces secured sizeable lodgements mainly because of numerous gaps in the defs. Main Offn was conducted from 3 Dec to 15 Dec. Massive attks were launched during early hrs of 4 Dec. Indian 9 Div launched a massive attk on ni 21/22 Nov and captured Gharibpur, 32 kms west of Jessore. 107 Bde tps were pulled back to Afra Nullah imed in front of Jessore Cantt. A fresh bn from 16 Div was given to 107 Bde to rft the Afra Posn. There was a lull in the battle in 107 Bde area b/w 29 Nov to 5 Dec. Indians after regrouping, resumed offn along rd Chuagacha-Jessore. Jessore was abandoned w/o any fight on 6 Dec. Div HQ fell back to Magura and crossed the Madhumati River. 107 Bde wdr to Nawanpura, north of Khulna. In Jhenida Sector, Indians launched the attk along inter-bde bdry on 28 Nov. Darsana fell on the opening day of war. Chuadanga def posn was still occupied but the en guided by Mukti Bahini mov X cty estb a blocking posn in the rear of Chuadanga to the west of Jhenida. On 6 Dec GOC 9 Div ordered 57 Bde to wdr to________. Jhenida thus was abandoned w/o fight due to en pressure. The bde, however, could not mov to Magura and instead reorg itself in ________ area close to Harding Br. Later, under hy pressure 57 Bde crossed over to _____ area across Ganges and remained uncommitted for the remaining pd. In Northen Sector Bogra, 16 Inf Div with its HQ at _____ was tasked to hold Dinajpur, Saidpur, Rangpur, Bogra and Rajshahi as fortresses with fol elms:a. ________at Rangpur. b. ________at Bogra. c. ________at Nator. d. ________at Nator. e. 1x Armd Regt, 1x R&S Bn, 2x Fd Arty Regt and 1x Mor Bty. In Bogra Sector Main offn of Indian 33 Corps was launched against ______. Rptd attks against Hilli failed to make any headway. On 8 Dec an Indian out flanking mov of a colm of Inf and armr through an inter bde gap about 10 kms north of Hilli, was successful in capturing Pirganj on Bogra- Rangpur rd. GOC ordered a C attk on Pirganj but its exec got delayed allowing the en to raise its str considerably. This en force then turned south in order to cut the route of wdr of___________. On 8 Dec GOC re-depl _______ in C pen posn along Karotaya River to block en adv towards Bogra. At this stage 16 Div had been decisively divided as 23 Bde was cut off on the Rangpur - Dinajpur Axis, while 205 Bde was pushed back to Bogra. The en finally attk Bogra on 15 Dec and the fight was going on when instrs for surrender were received. 4 Brahmanbaria was tasked to def Brahmanbaria, Sylhet and Maulvi Bazar with fol elms:a. ________at Brahmanbaria. b. ________at Sylhet. c. ________at Maulvi Bazar. d. 2xFd Arty Regts, 1x Armd Sqn, 1x R&S Pl and 1x Mor Bty. Indians launched their main offn on ni _______ with a concurrent push against 27 and 313 Bde. By______ , elms of 57 Indian Div managed to pen the fwd defs of 27 Bde through the inter bn gap. The Bde resisted for six days before falling back to Brahmanbaria, which had been dev into a str pt. However, this posn could not be org in time. When en contacted this posn on 6 Dec, 27 Bde had to fall back to _______ on the eastern bank of Meghna. Indians tried desperately to encircle HQ 14 Div alongwith 27 Bde and capture all the brs intact before they could cross over to Bhairab Bazar but failed. 27 Bde alongwith 14 Div HQ safely crossed over the Meghna to Bhairab Bazar on_______________. In Maulvi Bazar Sub Sector, Indians attk 313 Bde on __________ employing the tac of fixing the tps frontally while infil a force to estb blocking posn. Rptd Indian attks were successfully repulsed. After holding en for four days, the Bde conc both its bns around Maulvi Bazar on 3 Dec. On ______ sensing the likely collapse of 27 Bde along Akhaura Bhairab Bazar Axis, 313 Bde was ordered to link up with 27 Bde. 313 Bde being fully surrounded by then, failed to do so. Later, on ni______ , 313 Bde wdr and mov to Sylhet. In South Eastern Sector Chittagong __________ with its HQ at Chandpur was tasked to def Comila, Chandpur, Laksham and Chittagong as fortresses with fol elms:a. _______at Comila. b. _______at Feni. c. _______at Chittagong. d. 2x Fd Arty Btys and a Mor Bty. In 117 Bde area, the Indians pushed through an inter bn gap and estb a blocking posn behind both the bns on a tr ldg to________. 53 Bde was ordered to abandon its defs and join 117 Bde at__________. Indians avoided getting involved in pitched battle at Laksham and pushed fwd for______________. By_______, Indians had captured Hajiganj. On ni _______, 39 Adhoc Div HQ with its remnants crossed the Meghna River and mov to Dacca. Elms of 53 and 117 Bdes were still holding Laksham against rptd en gr and air attks. However, on 9 Dec some of the tps mov to ______ and a few to________. The Comilla fortress now had _____ bdes (about 2x bns size force) which were held out till surrender.

The bns were tasked to delay the en as long as possible, thereafter they were to fall back to _________ and ________ fortresses loc on the southern bank of Chota Brahamputra. ___________- launched offn on 18 Nov. En was successfully prevented from making any headway till 10 Dec. However, there being no tps aval for the protection of Dacca, 93 (Adhoc) Bde was ordered on 10 Dec to wdr and depl on the inner periphery of Dacca. The bn at Mymensingh gar lt the posn and reached ___________ w/o encountering any resistance. The Bde HQ alongwith rest of the tps mov southward engaged by Mukti Bahini in Tangail area, the force was scattered and could not reorg. Indians decided to emp a para Bde at Tangail being fairly close to Dacca, to give impetus to the op and prevent rfts. The drop was facilitated by the asst of Mukti Bahini already operating in Tangail area. On_______, Comd 93 (Adhoc) Bde was taken prisoner. Few elms of 93 Bde, however, did manage to reach Dacca on 13 Dec in an highly disorg manner. Indian tps adv southward linked up with the para bns on ______ and mov to Dacca bypassing whatever little resistance was encountered. Force Comparison Comparison of forces was as under:In Poonch Sector operation was planned by ______ and was conducted by________ and _________. The op could not meet success due to hy cas suffered by ph-1 coys incl the shahadat of the coy comd. 9 AK Bn was to fol 26 AK Bn and after Ghuthrian, ______ was to be secured by 0530 hrs. However, it was decided to by pass Ghuthrian initially and capture Thanpir in ph-1. 16 AK was to capture Jandrola Ridge. On 4 Dec only the Mandiala Ridge was engaged and finally captured. By first lt no worthwhile progress was made, however, 111 Bde took over Chhamb and Chak Pandit by______________________. In Sialkot Sector, as per the Op sit From 4th To 16th Dec 1971,The Indian adv was very slow due to __________which was tasked to fight a delaying battle in b/w the Shakar garh, Narowal and Zafarwal which were converted in to str pts. On 15th Dec the8 Armd bde was told to be prep for ' a bde attk East of Bein Nala to recapture lost area up to River Ravi. The C attks launched by the fmns in this sec showed lack of planning and unbearable haste. 8 Armd Bde launched a C attk against Indian conc across Bein River which was called off later and the tps were ordered to org def West of Bein. On morning 16 Dec a hasty and ill planned C attk was launched by 13 L frontally which proved very costly. On 17 dec, 35 FF was launched to recapture jarpal, the unit was pushed into battle w/o any planning preparation, and recce, which proved disastrous. In Lahore Kasoor Sector, 4 Corps was essentially depl for the def of Ravi-Beas Corridor, however units and bdes were also assigned to undertake ltd offn actions to seize features of tac imp some 500 to 2000 yds inside Indian territory, with a view to improve the def posture. Despite stiff resistance, our fmn made some gains in 11 Div and 105 Bde areas.
