HELMETS

ANSI Z89.1-2003
The two types of helmets are Type-I and Type-II. It is also classified as Class E, Class G, Class C. The threes classes indicates the helmets electrical insulation rating Class E(Electrical)-are tested to withstand 20,000 volts Class G(General)-are tested to withstand 2200 volts Class C(Conductive)-provide no electrical protection. Type I Type I helmets provide protection for the top of the head Type II Type II helmets provide some degree of top and off-center protection(lateral impact protection) Performance Requirements for Type I and Type II Helmets 1. Impact energy attenuation 2. Apex Penetration 3. Electrical insulation 4. Flammability Impact energy attenuation Impact energy attenuation test measures helmet crowns capability to reduce the force of an impact from falling objects to the top of a wears head. Helmet tested in the as worn position 8 pound steel ball dropped at a free fall height of 5 foot 1000 pound maximum transmitted peak force to head form 850 pound maximum transmitted average force to head form Tested at 00F and 1200F Apex penetration Measures helmet crowns capability to resist penetration. Product tested within 3 inch circle on top of helmet in as worn position 2.2 pound pointed steel penetrator with 600 angle dropped from a simulated free fall height of 8 foot Penetrator shall not make contact with head form Test apparatus includes electronic contact indicator, velocity indicator & Electronic recording equipment. Test same for class I ,II,III. Electrical Insulation Measures electrical shock resistance capability of helmet Class E(Electrical)(formerly class B) is intended to reduce the danger of exposure to high voltage electrical conductors, proof tested at 20,000 volts.Class E tested

first for impact energy attenuation, then tested at 20,000 volts for 3 minutes with maximum 9 milliamperes current leakage, then tested at 30,000 volts with no burn through permitted. Class G(General)(formerly class A) is intended to reduce the danger of exposure to low voltage electrical conductors, proof tested at 2200 volts. Class G tested at 2,200 volts for 1 minute, with 3 milliamperes maximum leakage. Class C(Conductive) is not intended to provide protection from electrical conductors. So it is not tested for electrical resistance Flammability Product tested in the as worn position.15500F flame impingement for 5 seconds. No visible flame after 5 seconds of flame removal. Chin strap retention-measures the ability of a chin strap to retain a helmet on a wearers head. Standard does not mandate the requirement for a chinstrap. However when it does it must meet the following requirements. Strap cannot be less than .5 inch in width. 22.2 pound mass is attached to the chin strap and dropped from a height of 4 inch. strap cannot detach from the helmet or elongate more than 1 inch.
