Thepurposeofthisminiprojectistoencouragestudentstodevelopboththeiranalysisskillsaswellas
theirdesignskills.Eachstudentmustsubmittheirworkforevaluation;thestudentsmaydiscussthe
approachedamongstthemselves.
Studentsareencouragedtouseengineeringtools,e.g.TRLINEsoftware,totesttheirdesignsandto
validatetheirwork.
Youshouldattemptallproblemsandclearlyindicatewhichanswerisforwhatproblem.Youmust
providejustificationforanswers;oftentheapproachisjustasimportantastheanswer.
Inthecaseofdesigningasystem,thereisoftennorightanswer.Mostdesignsarethebest
compromiseofdesiredbehaviourwithacceptablenonidealbehaviour.
Theapproachfortheminiprojectdesignisasfollows:
1) Makeananalyticalmodelofthesystem,forexampleabouncediagramordifferentialequation.
Thismodelshouldincludetheparametersthatyouwanttooptimizeorcontrol(suchasvoltage)
andthemodelshouldhavesomeinputvariablesthatyoucanchange(perhapsacomponent
resistance).
2) Usingthemodeldeterminetherelationshipbetweenthedesiredresponseandtheselectionof
inputvariables.Oftencomputerprogramsmayhelpwiththisstageofthedesign.
3) Showhowyourchoiceofinputvariablesprovidesthedesiredbehaviour.Thismaybedone
usinggraphics,tablesorwithmathematicalexpressions.
4) Assesstheundesiredbehaviourandprovideasummaryofgood/badpointsofyourdesign.This
isoftencrucialtogooddesignpractice.
5) Citewhereyourinformation,modelsandtoolscamefrom.Indicatewhenyouuseddatathatis
notyourown.Onlytakecreditforyourownwork,todootherwiseisacademicmisconduct(in
school)andprofessionalmisconductafteryougraduate.Ifyouuseatool,bookorsomeoutside
source,provideareferencethatwillallowotherstoverifywhatyoupresent.
Theanalysismethodsareoftensuggestedinthelecturenotes,practiceproblemsandthetextbook.The
samemethodsyouuseintheminiprojectsmaybequiteusefulintheexamandinlatercoursesand
evenwork.Thereforeitisagoodideatomakesurethatyoucandotheanalysisonyourown.Whilethe
toolscanhelpconfirmyourresults,youshouldbeabletomodelandanalyzetheproblemsonyourown
aswell.Notethereisoftenmorethanoneapproachorsolutiontothedesignanditcanbeveryhelpful
toexploredifferentapproachesandviewpoints.

Yourengineeringteamleaderhasselectedyoutodesignarectangularwaveguidesystemforuseina
microwavemeasurementsystem,showninfigure1.ThewaveguideshaveTE10cutofffrequencyof8
GHzandaTE01cutofffrequencyof12GHz.ThewaveguidesareairfilledandconstructedofAluminum.
Thecircuitconsistsoftwopaths,asshowninthefigure.Theleftpathhasatotallengthof30cmwhile
therightpathhasatotallengthof38cm.Themeasurementsystemhasaphaseshifter,(devicethat
changesphaseofsignal),andanattenuator,(devicethatchangesamplitudeofsignal)ontherighthand
pathandhasa10dBattenuatoramagictee(subtractsrighthandpathsignalfromsignalreflectedfrom

Your company makes instrument casings (aluminum metal boxes 0.05 mm thick) that hold electronic
systems.Inordertopreventthesystemfromoverheating,thecompanymakescircularholesinthebox
forairflow.Thesesystemsaresensitivetointerferencefromoutsidesignalsthatoperateat5GHz.
You are instructed to make sure that the holes in the box will not allow 5 GHz signals toenter the box
without producing 20 dB of attenuation. Since the holes are effectively very short (0.05 mm long)
circular waveguides, you have decided to design the holes so that they would operate like a circular
